This game is great and worth your money, even in 2016. It's a mystery-game, and it feels like an interactive movie. It plays in ARIZONA, you will see great landscapes and old western ghost towns. It sometimes feels like an episode of "Ghost Adventures" but even better cause you get to face and eliminate ghosts or shadow people... The Story-mode is a bit cheap, as in the middle of it... you get into a loop and have to play the same stuff over again with minor differences, that is the only thing that sucks. And there is an ARCADE-MODE where you fight the shadow people on places like a an old western cemetery, and old western ghost towns ---> THIS IS EXTREMLY COOL! The story-mode is over fast, but the arcade-mode is worth playing again and again and always fun.

As a writer, I consider the first Alan Wake a great game for its metalinguistic. The story within the story, the topic of what makes a writer a writer, the symbolism of the dark force as the market and the stupid corporate suits who twist and turn the will of an artist to make raw money... The fact that the story unfolded in two fronts (the game and the pages you collected) was specially fascinating.

As a gamer, the first Alan wake was interesting, nothing special beyond the light mechanic but fun on its own way, I ended up annoyed because even in the nightmare, the enemies were merely annoying and there was too much ammo (and with my hoarder mentality from games like Resident Evil and Dead Space, I ended having lots of moments where I left crates of ammo behind because I was full).

But this... unfortunately... feels like a shoddy and lazy filler. There is no story, it's just Alan hunting his doppleganger that it's in his place because story reasons that aren't really explained, the same places are used over and over and over. The city that the developers made with care to look alive and real is replaced by three patches of boring desert with three female characters that are awfully and lazily voiced. The combat has been dumbed down (amazingly), even if there are more guns for you to use, you can only carry two: A main arm, and a sidearm.

"But sir! Alan Wake was supposed to be realistic! The devs said so! You don't see a guy carrying fifteen weapons on his pockets!" Yeah, the devs also said that this game is more action-packed and inspired in americana action series. It's specially grieving since now ammo is universal. Black and red boxes will fill ammo for your side arm, and orange boxes will give ammo for your main weapon. Regardless if you're using an uzi, a nail gun, a rifle or a shotgun. It mostly boils to the fact that they wanted to port it from the consoles to the computers as fast as they could and couldn't be bothered with changing.

And to make things 'worse', the 'realistic' excuse can't be used anymore, since Alan now fights weird enemies that turn into birds or that split in half when shown bright light. While in the first game the dark presence merely took possession of people and objects, now it... mutates them? It gives an excuse that since the antagonist is different, it does different stuff but... again, within the own meta-linguistic, the story gives no reason WHY the antagonist could do it.

Speaking of meta-linguistic, all the pages that explained what happened to npcs and about the story that is unfolding were, again, severely dumbed down. With only three girls to talk to and three scenarios, and with most of the surprises being gone, most pages are just filler, annoying filler, needless filler.

While I didn't had high expectations about this game (with the company acknowledging that they wanted their time to make Alan Wake 2 and didn't wanted to rush things) I at least expected that they would do an enjoyable work, like the DLCs from the first game.

The only way I could reccomend this game is if you liked the combat mechanics from the first Alan Wake and wanted to play a dumbed down, arcade version of it.

Although better graphics, nice (finnaly) 60 Hz, this stand alone expansion lacks the deep story from the fist Alan Wake. Don`t get me wrong - it is truly great EXPANSION with a lot of fun inside, but it is really too short for my taste. Repeating the same maps is not bad for the atmosphere, but I`ll hardly worth replay of whole the game again... What am I saying - the story is brilliant again, makes hint of sequence, but we are still waiting...
Play this game only if you want the story from original Alan Wake expanded.

Much shootier than it's predecessor, also much shorter. Aside from one huge frame rate drop near the end the game ran, looked and felt smoother. The combat was more fluid and the new enemies and redesigned older ones kept it fresh, the story was a little lackluster and made little regards in the sense of the first game. The time loop idea is nice but did get a little repeatetive after a while. All in all a great cheap spin off but I want a proper sequel! 7/10

Alan Wake's American Nightmare is a good game, if you take into account the price. It only costs $10, before any potential sale, and if you like the original Alan Wake, then it is worth picking up. It's not perfect. There are only three levels that you repeat three times each due to time travel effects. However, there's enough variety in enemies and weapons that it is still worth your money and time.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is the unofficial sequel to the original Alan Wake.

As a fan of the original game, I would highly recommend playing this one after you’ve gone through the original. While it can be played as a standalone, there are many references to characters and stories from the original that help to enrich the story throughout the game.

No longer is Alan Wake in the beautiful rustic backdrop of the pacific northwest, this time he finds himself in the arid deserts of Arizona. With a new western theme, the game remains true to itself by using the same fighting techniques and graphic qualities as the first game, but with slight tweaks and updates that breathe a new life into the game. Collecting manuscripts to unlock weapons, more dialogue options for NPCs, and containers that give max ammo/batteries, for example.

Like the first game, this game has many interesting cut scenes that really add to the story, and the use of real actors is a nice touch as well. Television recordings and radio broadcasts help create a backdrop for the other characters in Alan’s old life, telling their current stories alongside his own.

There is also an Arcade Mode for those who wish to challenge themselves, or for those who just want to bash in some taken skulls.

For a short(er) game, I found the story to be intriguing and unique. However, as I progressed further into the game I felt like the gameplay got a little repetitive and the enemies became more annoying than challenging. The fact that there are only three locations to explore, and that you return to them repeatedly, was disappointing. I was expecting more unique and exciting locations much like the original had offered.

My overall score for the game: 7/10. Recommended for any fans of the series or anyone looking for a short supernatural shooter with both mystery and intrigue.

Great game! Yes, it's short but this game is not only about the story mode, which is good with a nicer visual, gameplay and UI than it's previous game and it features great soundtrack as usual with previous games from Remedy but it also got an Arcade Action where you have to reach a certain amount of star/points to unlock the next stage. It's fun and has leadersboards etc. You can get around 4/5 with the story mode including collecting all 53 pages and a buch more with the Arcade Action.

Not as great as the original Alan Wake, this game is good for it's price.

Score: 7/10.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare * 6/10

Alan Wake's American Nightmare takes place after the events of the original Game and DLCs. Now Alan must confront himself with the Psychotic Mr Scratch, which is trying to bring the darkness out and spread it in the world... Between a murder and a torture.

The premise is solid and the gameplay seems improved, but this is all a mask on a product which seems made with short time, minor inspiration and different purposes. This leads to a "sequel" which is not a sequel (remedy stated this is more like a spinoff), with a lack of atmosphere as in the original title, underdeveloped valid ideas and a gameplay improved and ruined at the same time.
The atmosphere and the gameplay are two elements really close as even though the story takes place always by night in unpopulated areas, with bad or no illumination the locations are not... interesting. They have nothing to do with the charm of Bright Falls, the landscapes, the detailed ambiences. Of course few places or elements are very interesting and detailed, but in its entirety it doesn't even compare with Alan Wake.
The Gameplay doesn't help much. They Have added more weapons unlockable with collectible manuscripts, but the worst part is the Ammo Box... A self regenerating ammo box. This seems like the same evolution that affected the Resident Evil Saga, so you had to survive with few bullets and a bunch of weapons with a character that can barely run, and now Alan Wake can Magically Run three times longer before spitting a lung, he can easily get his hands on an arsenal and the game almost throws ammo box at him... Nope. Even though I'm quite glad Alan Can Run longer (It was really frustrating in the Original Game), and I'm glad they've replaced the six-shoots revolver with an automatic gun... I mean, seriously? A gun with six bullets to be reloaded one by one? Come on... (Don't misunderstand me, I understand it was meant to give the game a Survival gameplay, it's just me hating that kind of guns...).
And once again For both the atmosphere and the gameplay, you will visit three relatively small locations for three times... And every time it will take you less to complete each locations. It took me 4 hours and I was even looking for collectibles...
There's also an arcade mode which is nothing more than an arena with hordes of takensattacking you. I don't even know why I'm bothering to mention it...
The only positive note is the idea behind the game and the character of Mr Scratch. Just look at the TVs you can find around the locations, you'll see his "messages" for Alan. Not to mention the Trailers With Mr Scratch, Ilkka Villi has done a really great interpretation. Too bad the character wasn't developed further than what you see in those videos, which is a serious waste...
The other and last positive note in the game is the music... Nevermind, I eat it back, because it features a new track from the "old Gods of Asgard", from Poets of The Fall (Actually the same Guys XD) and another track, "Club Foot" from Kasabian... And Even though I adore them that's everything good the soundtrack has to offer, which for me is not enough. There's no ominous music, the good tracks are wasted in Climaxing Action scenes which actually lasted 10 seconds on top and there's no credit song worth listening as in the Original Title.
What can I say, Alan Wake's American Nightmare isn't a very bad game, it had some good potential but some gameplay choices altered the spirit of the Original Alan Wake and the game itself looks rushed without any detailed developing in locations, characters or story. So all in all it's not a bad game actually, but a sequel/spinoff, call it whatever you want, which unfortunately doesn't really compare to the Original Alan Wake, and really this is a pity as I really loved it.

+++PROs+++
  • MR SCRATCH. I don't know how to put it. Ilkka Villi Simply did an awesome interpretation of Alan Wake's psychotic doppelganger. Simply awesome.
  • MUSIC. Kasabian's track really fits into the mood of the events and poets of the fall gave a couple of other great tracks.
---CONs---
  • REPETITIVENESS. The game takes place in three locations which you will visit for three times, doing almost the same things. It has a reason for that but it really affects the gameplay as it makes things easier and more predictable.
  • GAMEPLAY. I'm almost sure they planned improvements as increased stamina, more weapons and excessive amount of ammos to give more fun and action to the game, which to me resulted in a more boring gameplay with almost every survival element almost disappeared.
  • SHORT. There is not enough of anything: the game itself lasts 4 hours at best. The awesome interpretation of a stronger villain such as Mr Scratch is simply confined in cutscenes or in the videos seen in the TVs around the maps. The Soundtrack is made of just three tracks and even though they're awesome they're still just three songs. There are not enough bullets... No wait, there actually are all the bullets you want...

In my opinion, the original game had one weak point. The gameplay. It was fine, but got extremely boring if you have to do it for more than 10 minutes without a break (whether the break be a cutscene or whatever) because in itself it's not rewarding at all to kill these dark zombies.
Now American Nightmare makes it so that there's much less story and more gameplay. The little story this game has is extremely boring and dull, so that got completely trashed. Remains the gameplay, which is still the same unrewarding and monotone shadow killing. You can see where this goes. American Nightmare is awful, end of story.

1-sentence review : a nice side view on the Alan Wake's universe, it doesn't bring anything essential, but the (short) ride is enjoyable.

Pros:
- gameplay wise, it still works well
- atmosphere is well done, although not great like the one from the original Alan Wake
- arcade mode is well done and if you're into it you should spend a couple of hours to beat the normal levels

Cons:
- story doesn't make much sense if you look it from too close
- it's not Alan Wake 2 (not really a con, but it's important to be aware of that, else the game will be a big disappointment)
- it made me feel it'll be hard to do an actual interesting Alan Wake 2 with the state that we were left at end of the n°1 ... :-(
- a bit short on story time (about 5 or 6 hours without rushing) & story content
