Everything about this game makes me mad.

The graphics are like vomit. Like Diablo II Cinema Scene vomit.

Sonics character design is disgusting. Sure he looks the same as all the other 'new sonic' incarnations, but for some reason, Sonic 4 is where I draw the god damn line.

The level design is messy. I cant tell where I'm going or where the next enemy is going to appear. There is no flow to the play, it feels uncomfortable. Plus, the level themes are boring.

The Chaos Emerald levels are horrible. Now you control the tilt of the level instead of the level tilting for you, and I don't think they were timed so strictly in the previous games.

While I am almost positive this game was designed for mobile, that gives it no excuse to not look like a modern game. The models have this gross shiny "90s-console-3d" look to it and I hate that.

Please do not buy this game. I got it in a humble bundle for almost free, and I still regret it.

I wanted to go fast and all I got was gimmicks that kept slowing me down and terrible stage design. Also, Sonic feels slow, has a slower start up to running than past games and feels clunky. Target dash does not belong in this game and they need to stop relying on it as a fix to their poor design. Making us leap of faith into enemies 50% of the time is really annoying as well. Maybe one day they'll make a good game again. All I could think of is that free sneak king game burger king gave away for xbox and how it was actually better than this. Sad.

This was just a huge disappointment from Sonic 3. The levels are all re-hashed versions of previous Sonic games. Even the bosses are re-used from previous games. This does not feel like a new version of the game, it is more like a remastered compilation of prevous games.

The only innovation I saw was in the Labrynth zone where you can use your torch to light the explosives. The music was just very short loops that became annoying, especially at the end levels.

The only way you should buy/play this game is if it is on sale. I picked mine up at HumbleBundle so at least somebody is getting my money for a good cause.

This game feels...derivative at best. It's essentially a fan-created flash game by someone who played Sonic on the Game Gear...once...and then suffered major brain damage and tried to recreate their experience.

If you have an intense need to move at a faster than average pace, this game is okay for that I guess.

It doesn't live up to the name "Sonic the Hedgehog 4." It's pretty short and takes most of it's inspiration from the original Sonic the Hedgehog but if you ignore the name and just focus on what it is, it's a solid game.

The level design is good, it's a good mix of platforming and puzzles. New gimmicks are introduced every stage, so every level has something new and interesting. The bosses are alright, they move slowly and can sometimes be unpredictable but can all be beaten very quickly if you know what you're doing.

I've heard lots of complaints about Sonic's physics in this game. I can see where they are coming from since they're a lot floatier than the original but it's not like they're bad. Sonic's momentum carries well and is useful for accessing some secret areas. He's also really slow to start running but the addition of Spin Dash and Homing Attack make up for it.

The music is nice. There were only a couple really memorable tracks though. I didn't like that certain elements of the game had no sound effects at all though. It's strange not hearing a thing when Eggman waves agrily at Sonic after being defeated, especially since the game uses their modern designs.

The graphics are a bit bland too. This is especially noticable on the special stages where the background is just a Kaleidoscope.

Overall I liked this game, it has a few weird problems but the gameplay makes up for it. It does not, however, live up to it's name as a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

As with its predecessors, Sonic 4 is good, mindless fun that focuses on game mechanics, aesthetics, and speed instead of a story loaded with boring cutscenes and other nonsense. Its a real throwback to the glory days of the SEGA Genesis, and is great fun. On that note, there are two glaring problems you should be aware of if you want to buy the game. First and foremost, the game will not run at 1080p on its own--it is upscaled 720p and it looks terrible. To fix this, youll have to download a replacement exe file. Secondly, the physics are a bit messed up in some cases--for instance, sometimes sonic can literally stand on a curve. Other than those two problems, its great.

Imagine Sonic on the mega drive when you were a kid but someone took the game and tried to give it a 3d feel but keep it 2d. Thats what they did and failed. It would of been a lot nicer of they had just made it the same graphics as sonic 3/sonic and knuckles. Now imagine how hard those games were. Alright not the hardest but they were pretty hard, Imagine you could just press jump twice and sonic did all the stuff it took you a long time to practise and get right as a kid. The homing jump just makes it way too easy. Obviously in Sonic adventure where it actually was 3d it was sensible to put that in as it could of been hard to negotiate all the different parameters to hit a bad guy in that scenario. In a 2d side scroller it isnt needed.

The levels are obviously rehashes of levels from Sonic's hayday like most of the sonic games. People were moaning about the music. I agree it feels as if Sega thought no one could top Micheal Jacksons music from the old Sonic games so we shouldnt bother give it the least budget.

Overall its kind of a wierd nostalgia but it wears off after the first boss fight (which is just the sonic 1 first level boss obviously). Especially when you just spam jump and Sonic flies over and smackes him needing no direction from you.

If its cheap like how I got it through Humble Bundle go for it but dont pay full price.

At least this game tried, and that's all I can say on the plus side for this monstrosity, sadly. The physics are garbage, the graphics are ugly, animations are wonky, as well as the controls. Nothing went right. What the ♥♥♥♥ is a Sonic?

LOW ENERGY game.

I found myself turning off the forgettable soundtrack and playing old kirby OST's off of youtube, but patching out the lackluster forgettable music doesn't fix the lackluster forgettable gameplay. The controls are slow, the graphics are weak and the level design is unchallenging. There are much better entries in the series, don't waste your time here

MUCH better off playing the original games or the newer 'Sonic Generations' if you want some hedgepig in your life.

Apart from some of Sonics older fans who last got to play the previous insalment of this series (Sonic the Hedgehog 3, February 2nd, 1994) the little blue begger doesn't seem to have aged well.

Physics have worsened, Graphics are just... Bluergh. Music is more childish and less innovative and shorter. Although Doctor Robotnik did surprise me in the first battle. he came along with his massive balls and swung them about as usual and after you beat him normally he goes for one last massive overhead swing attack of ball crushing. Which was a nice twist. I guess.

I was 9 when I played the third game. I'm now 30... Either I should grow up or this timeline of sonic games should have tried to match me in some way. Probably the former, but I wouldn't complain about the latter.

The 30 year old in me is now going to go and get some work done. the inner nine year old is going be a little upset about his favourite hedgehog and the inner teen is probably going to be thinking about ♥♥♥♥.

I find this to be a great carry on from the orignal games of Sonic The Hedgehog series, it stays to the core of the orignal games, which gives it more character to stand out from other Sonic games, that are more complex.

In this episode play as Sonic, which is main character of course, but the only other character playable is Super Sonic when unlock him from getting all Chao Emrarlds and collect 50 or more rings in a level. I would like play as other Sonic characters, but stay true to the older games, I guess Sonic won't of met some of the characters? Taills is in this episode, but he only there to fly Sonic to Eggman base at the end of this episode, Taills could been used more or be made playable with Sonic or alone?

But of course Tails is in the next Episode and is playable, but on the other hand where's Kunckles, this game is taking place after Sonic and Kunckles, so Kunckles should be around?

As for if I like this Episode more Episode 2, both games are great to play, but Episode 2 is more for the Two Player, than where this one I would said I more for the One player.

This is a Sonic game. The understood story is that Eggman is up to no good again, and it's up to you--Sonic--to save the day.

Gameplay:
The game plays mostly like the other original Sonic the Hedgehog games: you jump, roll, attack enemies, collect rings, etc, but now you can use Sonic's more recent homing attack to chain attacks together and jump over wide gaps. If you enjoyed the original's gameplay, you'll like this.

Visuals:
The graphics are strange. At first I was taken back by the strange blend between 2D and 3D visuals, but I soon adjusted. Some areas are very aesthetically pleasing, whereas others fall more on the ugly side. It is more in line with the original's visuals, but carefully avoids straying too far from the modern art style--this might turn off both retro and modern fans.

Audio:
The music is not bad, but the originals' is better. The sound effects are like the originals', which is fine.

Stages:
The stages are excellent. Some of the later stages in particular are very creative and are a blast to play. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the stages were designed.

Value:
The game is relatively short. I finished all of the stages within 3 hours, which was slightly disappointing. The bosses aren't too varied, but the final boss is incredibly difficult (and a lot of fun). There are plenty of other things to do outside of the main game: time attacks, special stages, collecting achievements, etc. If you're the kind of person who runs through a game's main campaign without doing extras, this game might disappoint you.

Verdict:
I like this game, despite it being short. I plan on going through and collecting all of the emeralds, doing the time attacks, and trying to get all of the achievements. I bet the main game plus the extras will stack up to about 8 hours of gameplay, which is pretty good.
