ALARM ALARM ALARM.

Welcome to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Episode 1.

ALARM ALARM ALARM.

I was going to write a review explaining how bad this game is, but then I got to the-

ALARM ALARM ALARM.

Mad Gear level where the same awful buzzing alarm plays for the entire 4 minute stage.

The audio guy should be ashamed. Play it if you must, but you be ready to mute your speakers or down some advil.

The sequel fans have waited 16 years for is finally here!

That's what SEGA proudly proclaims at the top of this page. And just from looking at screenshots, you would think that this would be the case. It looks like it's a return to form for the Sonic games, even if it's in episodic form (for whatever reason). This is not the case.

Instead of revisiting the fun, fast gameplay of the originals, this game tries to mix things up a bit - and falls into the exact same pitfalls that 3D games in the series have been trapped by for years. The developers sought to add the lock-on jump mechanic that was introduced in the Sonic Adventure series to this game, to no success. It seems like a feature that was added on to help players traverse the levels better - but only because the levels are hard to get through in the first place.

The difficulty in this game isn't the problem - it's the totally incoherent level design. Sonic the Hedgehog was a series known for its lightning-fast gameplay and ability to speed through levels as fast as you can. More recent games, however, focus on putting as many obstacles as possible in your way in order to slow the player down or even make them come to a full stop. One of these such obstacles in this game are vines - no matter how much momentum you have, you have a 50/50 chance of keeping that momentum when you go to make your jump, requiring you to stop what you're doing and build momentum on said vine in order to continue to the next one.

SEGA and Sonic Team have obviously lost their touch when it comes to the Sonic series. The Sonic Rush series on the Nintendo DS did a much better job of carrying on the 2D tradition. Let DIMPS develop all your 2D Sonics, SEGA. You'd do everyone a favor.

Instead of getting this game, maybe fill your 2D Sonic cravings with other games like Freedom Planet or the remastered version of Sonic CD on Steam. Don't buy this retreaded garbage.

Go this in the Humble Bundle so I proabably only ended up paying 50 cents for it but its terrible

You know what made older sonic game great? Running fast and actually feel like your're going fast. So you'd think they'd actually make this one similar to those, but holy ♥♥♥♥ this game is soooooo bad. Theres always something waiting to slow you down or some obstacle that you cant run past. It makes levels take longer than necessarry and its just plain aggrivating. Boss fights are your typical sonic boss fights, nothing crazy. The music is pretty good kinda gives you the nostalgic feeling but not as good a Sonic 3 imo.

The graphics are kinda meh some things look good but Sonic looks a little out of place most of the time.

Somehow they ♥♥♥♥ed up the way it runs. I dont even know how they made it run terribly. Please tell me how my modern day PC can not play this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game but it can play any other game at 2k with 60 fps. This game always stutters like its too good for your pc to handle.

I dont think SEGA even tried on this game. Feels like a cheap cop-out to make some money.
A measily 4/10. It might be for you but probably wont be.

Honestly not a terrible game; I would recommend at sale price.

After actually enjoying the game on mobile and seeing all the negative reviews, I am surprised that I wasn't disappointed in this port.

Pros- [/list]
  • Soundtrack is good
  • Level design is ok
  • Much more immersive and fun on PC

Cons-
  • You can't see as much of the screen as the older Sonic games
  • Looks graphically.. weird.
  • Homing attack makes the game fairly easy but levels are designed around it to a decent extent
  • Hitting a boss such as the new Green Hill Eggman will bounce you backwards. This is uncontrollable and annoying.
  • Adding to this, the game is a bit slower and the momentum and control isn't as good as the older games.

REVIEW :
Wow, this game is a worthy sequel to the Sonic The Hedgehog series. It has beautiful stages, good soundtracks, smooth game play. If you like the original series, you have to get this one. The only downside is they separate the game into 2 episodes and sell them separately.

CONCLUSION :
Recommended on full price, a must-have on sale price.

MUCH better off playing the original games or the newer 'Sonic Generations' if you want some hedgepig in your life.

Apart from some of Sonics older fans who last got to play the previous insalment of this series (Sonic the Hedgehog 3, February 2nd, 1994) the little blue begger doesn't seem to have aged well.

Physics have worsened, Graphics are just... Bluergh. Music is more childish and less innovative and shorter. Although Doctor Robotnik did surprise me in the first battle. he came along with his massive balls and swung them about as usual and after you beat him normally he goes for one last massive overhead swing attack of ball crushing. Which was a nice twist. I guess.

I was 9 when I played the third game. I'm now 30... Either I should grow up or this timeline of sonic games should have tried to match me in some way. Probably the former, but I wouldn't complain about the latter.

The 30 year old in me is now going to go and get some work done. the inner nine year old is going be a little upset about his favourite hedgehog and the inner teen is probably going to be thinking about ♥♥♥♥.

This game feels...derivative at best. It's essentially a fan-created flash game by someone who played Sonic on the Game Gear...once...and then suffered major brain damage and tried to recreate their experience.

This was just a huge disappointment from Sonic 3. The levels are all re-hashed versions of previous Sonic games. Even the bosses are re-used from previous games. This does not feel like a new version of the game, it is more like a remastered compilation of prevous games.

The only innovation I saw was in the Labrynth zone where you can use your torch to light the explosives. The music was just very short loops that became annoying, especially at the end levels.

The only way you should buy/play this game is if it is on sale. I picked mine up at HumbleBundle so at least somebody is getting my money for a good cause.

At least this game tried, and that's all I can say on the plus side for this monstrosity, sadly. The physics are garbage, the graphics are ugly, animations are wonky, as well as the controls. Nothing went right. What the ♥♥♥♥ is a Sonic?

This game is just.... Bad... I can see the potential it has, but I have never felt Sonic so slow. Every time I lose rings or hit a spike, I don't feel like I did something wrong, I feel like the game is just hiding things so I can die. The lock on system is a good concept, but half the time it actually doesn't lock and then Sonic does weird hops and face plants. I then decided to play Episode 2. Trust me, that game is better. Skip this one.

I find this to be a great carry on from the orignal games of Sonic The Hedgehog series, it stays to the core of the orignal games, which gives it more character to stand out from other Sonic games, that are more complex.

In this episode play as Sonic, which is main character of course, but the only other character playable is Super Sonic when unlock him from getting all Chao Emrarlds and collect 50 or more rings in a level. I would like play as other Sonic characters from Sonic games, but staying true to the older games, I guess Sonic won't of met some of the characters? Tails is in this episode, but he only there to fly Sonic to Eggman base at the end of this episode, Tails could of been used more or be made playable with Sonic or alone?

But of course Tails is in the next Episode and is playable, but on the other hand where's Kunckles, this game is taking place after Sonic and Kunckles, so Kunckles should be around?

As for if I like this Episode more Episode 2, both games are great to play, but Episode 2 is more for the Two Player, than where this one isn't, I would said it's more for the One player.

This is a Sonic game. The understood story is that Eggman is up to no good again, and it's up to you--Sonic--to save the day.

Gameplay:
The game plays mostly like the other original Sonic the Hedgehog games: you jump, roll, attack enemies, collect rings, etc, but now you can use Sonic's more recent homing attack to chain attacks together and jump over wide gaps. If you enjoyed the original's gameplay, you'll like this.

Visuals:
The graphics are strange. At first I was taken back by the strange blend between 2D and 3D visuals, but I soon adjusted. Some areas are very aesthetically pleasing, whereas others fall more on the ugly side. It is more in line with the original's visuals, but carefully avoids straying too far from the modern art style--this might turn off both retro and modern fans.

Audio:
The music is not bad, but the originals' is better. The sound effects are like the originals', which is fine.

Stages:
The stages are excellent. Some of the later stages in particular are very creative and are a blast to play. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the stages were designed.

Value:
The game is relatively short. I finished all of the stages within 3 hours, which was slightly disappointing. The bosses aren't too varied, but the final boss is incredibly difficult (and a lot of fun). There are plenty of other things to do outside of the main game: time attacks, special stages, collecting achievements, etc. If you're the kind of person who runs through a game's main campaign without doing extras, this game might disappoint you.

Verdict:
I like this game, despite it being short. I plan on going through and collecting all of the emeralds, doing the time attacks, and trying to get all of the achievements. I bet the main game plus the extras will stack up to about 8 hours of gameplay, which is pretty good.
