"GalCiv2 is often said to be the best 4X game ever made. A bit dated by now but still very good if you can overcome that."

About This Game

Get the complete Galactic Civilizations II saga including the acclaimed PC strategy game of the year Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords, the award winning expansion pack Dark Avatar, and the newest expansion pack Twilight of the Arnor!

Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords: Galactic Civilizations II is the sequel to 2003's hit turn-based strategy game of the same name. The player takes on the role of the leader of a space-faring civilization and must guide its expansion in a hostile galaxy. Gamers must balance their economic, technological, diplomatic, cultural, and military power to forge alliances, fight wars, and ultimately dominate the galaxy. The game is single-player and allows the player to play randomly generated galactic maps or play through a multi-mission campaign that tells the story of an ancient enemy called the Dread Lords.

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar: The expansion pack for Stardock's award-winning hit strategy game, Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. This expansion pack not only adds the usual content that expansion packs tend to do such as new opponents, new units and a new campaign. It also greatly expands the game play of Galactic Civilizations II. New features include asteroid belts on the map that can be mined for resources, unique planets that require special technologies to colonize, spies to conduct sabotage and destabilization (or used to protect your worlds from the same), new types of diplomatic treaties, an enhanced artificial intelligence engine, and much more!

Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor: The year is 2227 and the fire of war is consuming the galaxy thanks to the manipulations of the evil Dread Lords. But the remaining factions, led by the humans, have a plan to rid the galaxy of the Dread Lords once and for all.

Expand the Galactic Civilizations II universe with Terror Stars, unique technology trees per civilization, Map editors, Custom Scenario makers, campaign editors, new types of ships, new planetary improvements, and much more!

This title kinda reminds me of Civilization IV, the gameplay has some little similarities, but it has a lot of features I really like.

The ability of being able to customize all the races and how you have to design your ships in order to get a tactical advantage over your enemies keeps me replaying this title often.

This game would be perfect if it wouldn't be for the frequent bugs and crashes, luckily, it has an autosave feature that allows you to continue the game after the crashes... unless your savefile gets corrupted, which happened to me sometimes.

Considering the developers are currently working on the sequel of this game, I guess the patches/fixes will never come. It's a shame, as this title is really worth a go.

So, my review is that this game is not recommended. I'll say now, that some people may enjoy it, but personally I didn't. It's a time-sink, but not a particularly fun one. I'll begin with the pros.

Pros:
Good tech tree. It's interesting, useful, and well-made. It goes quickly, while still lasting quite a while.

Customization. You can build ships, create custom races, all of that. I spent most of my time simply re-inacting my books, and seeing how different races of mine would react to those of other universes.

Battle screen. If you have two fleets that are in battle, you get a more detailed video of the battle. Though not particularly useful itself, it is enjoyable to watch.

Now, for the cons. These are the reasons why I wouldn't recommend this to most people.

Cons:
Slow start. The beginning feels boring and long-running. Every game begins the same: You have your system, you colonize the one other habitable planet, then you move to the next. And even once you meet another race, you don't have diplomatic incidents to worry about. The worst you could do is sell something important to them by accident. Until you go to war, it's a very tedious and repetetive task.

Tactics are useless. Aside from wanting to attack THIS planet instead of THAT one, you don't really need to use tactics. If your ships are strong enough, you just win.

Lack of diplomacy. You can't use diplomacy at all. You can pay other races to ally with you, or to declare war on somebody, but that's it.

Finally, the game just doesn't fit the role I expected from it. Instead, I got a time sink that I probably won't play for months on end. If you want something that will bring tactics into the game, I'd recommend Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. For those who enjoy a more basic game when it comes to fleet tactics and diplomacy, you may enjoy this. It has it's ups.

Whilst it might not sem like a great game you fairly quickly get sucked in and find you have been sat in front of the PC for 11 hours straight.

Not amazing but really addictive.

Although a well crafted game and better than most in the genre, this game just doesn't play well.

In one play through I'm already bored, and have little to return for.

I'd write a longer review, but there isn't really much else to talk about. It's a space rts that is wildly similar to others with a few bonus features, and that's about it.

Get it on sale, but unless you're a die hard RTS fan, this will fade into the background and fall on your played once and never played again lists.

One thing I need to say is that is can be a really annoying game to start and play. Seriously, you need to do things that any normal person wouldn't even want to do. I like the game, but it's too much of a problem to play. I can't play it anymore because I don't know the serial number.

Incredible piece of ♥♥♥♥. It doesn't load after steam purchase and requires you to register with some obscure Stardock account services which don't actually work at all. So you need some third party account with a Steam game and its impossibl to figure out how that crap even works and requires you to input your email product key your personal data?

Stay away from this game, this publisher and this developer at all costs.

A suprisingly deep game filled with so much customization. One of the only 4x games that has senate elections every few years. Not for everyone, but that's because those people enjoy banal casualized trite like Civilization V without the expansions. This game is concentrated meth, play at your own risk.

This is easily one of the most engrossing, deepest and most importantly the most fun strategy game ever made. Easy to lose a day to this one. A must have, especially if you're waiting for the price of GalCiv III to go down!

I can already tell I'm going to sink hours upon hours of my life into this game.
I have never really been big on Civilization games. I just never really enjoyed them. But this is unbelievably fun. Just the feeling of researching so many things to build up the might of your military, the progression and improvement of your research, the approval of you government and the strength of your social skills is overwhelmingly fantastic. And when you become strong enough, invading planets and eradicting other Empires/Civilizations, working your way up from weakest to strongest gives your the feeling that you're powerful beyond belief (even though in real life you wouldn't stand a chance doing all of this).
This game takes a while to understand, but that's what it's meant to be like, I find that to be a plus.
Get this gem. It's a definite 10/10 in my book. Definitely worth the full price, even after all of these years.

If you are looking for perfect 4x strategy and you are not very familiar with them, you should start here. GC2 starts fluently with every aspect of game and do not let you be lost in complicated and complex statistics.
Easy to learn, hard to master. Special feature is definitelly designing your own space ships ( Very similar to Kerbal Space ) This game is worth every cent. - Sorry for unclear english :P
