I like this game a lot.
Except for the game modes I have trouble with, like Trick Rush and Head 2 Head.
I do recommend this game for a lot of reasons.
Reason 1: You get to ram a car into a bunch of people for no reason!
Reason 2: The announcer makes it a lot funnier
Reason 3: The music is pretty awesome
Reason 4: There is so many variety, from going to Yokohama Japan, to Vegas, this is one heckuva tour.

This game is a fun one if you are into your cars and speed. Everything is very detailed, and you won't make a mistake buying this game. Apart from all the good things, I do have one issue with this. And that is that after about a year of gameplay, the game seems to stop launching. I click the Play button and it starts running, and automatically stops. This is most likely a glitch, and might not happen to any other users playing this game.

Do you enjoy crashing into stuff?
Need a break from the same old tired racing experience?

Then this is the game for you.

DiRT Showdown is a game that gets a lot of uncessary hate because it carries the DiRT title.
It's not a main series game. This game made no promises about being a rally sim, and to be fair, I'm glad it isn't.
Since the first GRiD game, I've been wanting a Codemasters title that embraces its identity as an arcade racer and is all about fun. That's DiRT Showdown in a nutshell. Just fun.

There's a wide variety of event types and cars, plus the game runs great.
I'm playing with a Logitech DFGT wheel and so far have had a great experience. I played a little bit with a controller too and that functions as good as you would expect.

Concurrent players for this game are extremely low these days, don't buy it for the online.
Luckily the game provides a great SP experience and even includes local splitscreen.

My only issue with this game, like some other Codemasters titles, is that it can't handle being Alt+Tabbed. It goes into an 800x600 window and cannot go back into fullscreen until you set it in the graphics options. There is also no borderless windowed mode. A small caveat to an otherwise all-around great experience.

On destruction derby arenas the wrecked cars rudely disappear and basically respawn soon after. In FlatOut games scrap and all objects stay until a match ends. DiRT Showdown is a poor game for destruction.

The Dirt series has always been a kooky marriage between Codemasters' Colin McRae roots and the extreme (and extremely marketable) excess of ESPN's X Games. Dirt Showdown dispenses with rallying altogether; instead it's a showcase of arcade racing and trick-based showmanship, topped off with an overzealous announcer and wobbly dubstep.

Yet despite the focus on speed and destruction, Showdown is the most schizophrenic Dirt to date. The excellent car handling model that has evolved over the previous games – realistic yet accessible – sits uncomfortably against such arcade trappings as the purely cosmetic damage system or rechargeable nitrous. Boost slowly builds up as you drive, but to get a bigger increase you'll need to ram, shunt and T-bone your way through the field. The problem is that bone-shattering crunches into another racer are as likely to put you sideways into a wall. The AI cars have a tendency to cluster together, so you'll find yourself at the back of the pack before you've had time to adjust.

It's a problem compounded by the lack of flashbacks, which in previous games let you rewind mistakes to have another go. In Showdown, when those mistakes are as much about luck as your own skill, losing this feature can frustrate. In the figure-of- eight circuits of 8-Ball mode, wrecking out at the last corner from a side-on hit is infuriating.

It means that in races, your best tactic is to ignore the additions and just race, using Boost in the few occasions that it's available, but otherwise concentrating on a clean run to the finish line. Despite a lacklustre start on the bland Miami track, once you progress to later seasons and get to race on the snowcovered Colorado or neon-lit Tokyo, it's a lot of fun. But this is ground that was covered before and better in Dirts 2 and 3.

Two other event types are included, each with their own set of cars to unlock and upgrade, and both feel more at home in Showdown's roster. Demolition, including the destruction derbies of Rampage and Knock Out, and the Hard Target assassination mode, are romps of vehicular violence. Meanwhile, 'Hoonigan' events favour precision and skill, and as such are the only modes to feature flashback rewinds and licensed vehicles (including, brilliantly, a classic Mini Cooper). Gymkhana trick-runs make a return appearance, but the highlight is the Smash Hunt challenge. Here you target specific coloured foam blocks in a strangely compelling mixture of Simon Says and a driving test.

In all it's a lot of game modes, spread out over multiple courses. But even with the variety, Showdown's ultimately lightweight: you'll fly through the campaign. It's good, and at times even great, but comes across like an expansion to tide you over until the next proper release.

Game Review

"Sweet... sweet car destruction..."

DiRT Showdown is a spin-off of the highly acclaimed arcade racing DiRT series. It´s a game focused on arcade racing with lots of destruction and car madness, unlike the other games from the DiRT series that had a more "serious" approach, mixing simulation with arcade. This game still has some similarities with those, while being a completely different experience. One thing I can grant you, it is extremely fun.

Gameplay

The gameplay is extremely satisfying, especially the sweet car destruction (which is basically the main focus in this game). The arcade handling feels great in this game, very easy to master and enjoyable. The AI opponents is ultra aggressive, but that works well in this game since it is based on pure car carnage (reminds me a lot of the flatout series), a shame you only face 8 opponents though. This game also as a nitro boost that slowly recharges over time and much more faster if you create some chaos and hit the opponents cars, never seen on any DiRT series game, but again, this one is essentially a spin-off, with a few things borrowed from the other DiRT games. Track design is amazing as previous DiRT games, a shame that the game borrows many tracks from those later games, but at least they feel fresh in this game. Lots of game modes too, from basic racing, to pure demolition derby carnage will keep you entertained.

Longevity and Replayability

The longevity of the career mode is strangely small which is a bummer, I completed it in about 8 hours. Still you have other modes like joyride with tons of missions and challenges to complete, like in DiRT 3, which will get you around 2 hours to complete it 100%. Then of course, you have the multiplayer where luckily you will spend a good amount of hours but I will address that below in my review. It does not have that much tracks either, even though most are awesome and have many variations, you can get a little bored of constantly racing in the same places. Essentially the single-player part of the game is kind of a letdown since you complete it rather fast.

Graphics and Presentation

Now the graphics and presentation. I have only good things to say in this matter. The tracks are beautiful, they are a blast to the eyes. Filled with life, great colors, they really transmit a good vibe. The cars are amazingly detailed too, with great deformation models which greatly help improving the experience. Smooth visuals as in all games in the DiRT series. Presentation-wise it is top notch too, very similiar to the treatment of the late DiRT 3, with similar menus and art style.

Sound

The sound department is sharp too as expected. The sound of the people reactions, the engines roar, the destruction, everything is amazing. Well except for the commentary during races which is insanely cheesy and lame. I loved the soundtrack too, it fits perfectly in this games, a really great song list in my opinion.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer is a blast. Playing this game online is a blast. Insanely fun, crazy-action packed races. Sadly few people play it at the time (game was released in 2012), but with some luck you will still find filled lobbies. I noticed some lags in some chaotic races that can get into your nerves, but nothing that makes the game unplayable. Another important aspect in the multiplayer is that this game supports split-screen. You heard it right, SPLIT-SCREEN! A feature that many games nowadays do not have, that makes for some awesome gaming sessions with friends.

Performance

Game performed amazingly on my native resolution 1440x900 in highest settings, locked in 60fps with almost no dips, both single-player and split-screen, on my budget rig (check my profile if you want to know the specs). It is well optimized and has tons of graphical options, so unless you have a potato pc, it will handle it perfectly.

Summary

Pros:
  • Extremely satisfying races and car destruction
  • Great graphics and presentation
  • Simplistic arcade handling, yet it feels very good
  • Good range of game modes
  • Online is incredibly fun

Cons:
  • Single-player career is very small
  • Lame commentary
  • Occasional lags in multiplayer

My personal score: 7.5/10

If you like arcade racing games this one you should get. It is extremely enjoyable, yet the single-player runs out very fast. And the multiplayer is almost dead, so you should pick this up when its on sale and not full price since it is when the multiplayer can get resurrected and have people playing it for a few days and the single-player definitely wont justify the game base price (even though it is not that expensive). A great game to spend a few hours when you are bored!
