A little update

Hi everybody!
I've pushed out an update that fixes one cause of slowdown for some users. Also if the game crashes when you quit, please delete the "steam_api.dll" file located in the game's folder (Steam\steamapps\common\RBS). This file is no longer included in the game files so if you delete or reinstall the game you won't need to remove this file.

Cheerio, and have a good un,
- James @ Boss Baddie

There's a quaint simplicity about Really Big Sky: twin-stick shooter, drill through planets/asteroids and you can funnel points you earn during runs into improving certain attributes and powers. Levels are randomly generated (as far as I can tell) and defeating bosses and certain enemies requires some thought but isn't an obnoxious puzzle. Additionally you can unlock more modes that are essentially the base game but with extra parameters, greater difficulty or alternate milestones! On the surface it's all really good and the graphics are decent.

It was about an hour into the game that I realised I hadn't the faintest idea of what I was doing: obviously I was shooting ships and (trying) to dodge their attacks but then I would be sucked into a vortex? Or perhaps the colours would invert or suddenly blur? Did I unlock something? Am I more powerful? Does this enemy have a shield? No wait, that shield apparently damages me but another one didn't? I put a bunch of points into some random stats but I don't think they've done anything?

Really Big Sky's gameplay is completely incoherent and this is not helped by the scorchingly bright and blurry visuals. The "library" doesn't help remove the obfuscation surrounding the gameplay mechanics but is full of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ed smug descriptions, which on reflection should have been expected from the atrocious voiceovers heard during the game. Some of the stats are incredibly obvious and very necessary, but a lot of the laser related upgrades often seem to have little effect, or at least their impact is not conveyed effectively.

I got this game for free so technically I got my money's worth, but it's really difficult to recommend this game over pretty much any other scrolling shoot 'em up or bullet hell games on Steam. Admittedly the genre is not "my jam" but Ikaruga is good so maybe start there instead?

Great game if you like horizontal shoot-em-ups (shmups) and sometimes have short gaming sessions (10 min. to 30 mins.); you'll be able to fit 2-3 runs before having to stop.

If you are curious about shmups as well, I feel like this game could be a great way to start!

Pretty colors, great graphics, however, both these things are the game's downfall.

Once you start upgrading your ship and surviving longer than a minute or two your screen becomes chalk full of pretty effects that cover up bullets and warp your screen so you have no idea what is going on because you can't see anything. The more upgrades you get, the more visuals erode your vision.

Random stuff will happen, such as your bullets moving too slow to actually hit bosses, your screen will go "negative" but everything is nearly the same color which prevents you from seeing further, or giant laser beams will shoot across the screen without warning of where it's going to hit. So when you think you have a good streak going, prepare to be dissapointed from randomness stopping you.

Also there's these nifty little forcefield pods that prevents your bullets from going through the field to destroy the pod. Sometimes these will clutter up your screen moving extremely slowly, or stand still during boss fights. The only way to destroy them is to use a spinning sphere around your ship to destroy them. So you get really close without touching them, stand there for 2 seconds, to wait for the sphere to come around to destroy them. In the middle of the boss fight this is very impractical. During some of those random screen effects, you're unable to see the forcefields at all. In addition, there are "hard forcefield" enemies that kill you on impact as well. These as well you can't see when you're in some of those screen effects.

Visuals 9/10, so pretty, but obscuring.
Gameplay 5/10, visuals too obscuring.
Music 7/10, menus have extremely loud music, ingame has repeating decent music.
Sounds 10/10, very well done, plenty of non-grainy sounds.

Simply put, this game is a modern version of Galaga - an EXTREMELY CHAOTIC take on the classic with various different game modes and outstanding graphics to boot. For as little as 5$, this arcade style shooter is a steal and you will assuredly get numerous hours of fun out of it.
Comes with in-game achievements and steam cards, now thats just icing on the cake.
Enjoy folks.

It's the best screen-saver ever!!

Well, as long as you only need to save your screen for like 1-2 minutes. Because that's about how long I last!

Is there more trance tracks than the first one?

This review is likely to become massively edited! :D

I got this game for free and I'm still disappointed.
In fact, this game just downright annoys me - the controls, the flashing colours, urgh. It might be enjoyable for more casual gamers, but not me.

Randomly generated words offer a great replayability for this game. It is challenging, fast, flashy and addictive.
