New? Nah. Improved? In most ways.

First of all, let's coverSonic CD, in general. It's not perfect, but it certainlywas ambitious. Gameplay-wise, it's more like Sonic 1, which speed-demons tend to not like. it's more based on exploration than anything else. The levels are large and you may get lost in a few, but it's actually disapoinintly easy (especially the bosses, despite being some of the most creative and interesting ones in the series), though the replay value makes up for that. This is considered the best Sonic game by many, and for good reason. Definiteltly not good for a first Sonic game, though. Stick with Sonic 3 & Knuckles for that.

If that sounds good to you, it's a good buy. this is probably the best version of Sonic CD overall-and likely the cheapest you'll find, at 5 bucks normally. If you own the original or any of the ports, you could skip this one and not miss much. Read on for details.

This version is a notable improvement in many ways, if you consider updated graphics improvements, which I do here (Loli Amy is looking hot as ever). That's the main thing this adds (I mean the graphics, not HD Amy Rose), and the biggest reason to buy, but it may be jarring to some. It was hard to get used to after playing the original for over a decade, personally. This is also the first time, to my knowledge, the first time JP/EU soundtrack is available inside the US officially, which is something many fans have wanted for a long time. Oh, and Tails/Spindash mode, which can be a novelty, though having the spindash makes it easier than it already is, which is stupid.

If it matters to you, several things were taken out, mostly likely due to liscencing issues, much like JSR. The lyrics to the JP/EU opening and ending themes, "Sonic - You Can Do Anything" and "Cosmic Eternity - Believe in Yourself" are gone, Most versions of the iconic "Sonic Boom" are completely gone, even on the US soundtrack, with only short the remix from the Time Attack menu returning. Also, even in "Nostalgia" mode, and changing the resolution to that of the original, it still looks too darn good.

TL:DR "Way past cool. Or should I say way future cool?"

This is the most clustered Sonic game of the original era that I've played.

Personally it didn't feel like a true Sonic game - I don't know what it is. I thought I would've liked it, and I suppose it does look promising. But it felt..... out of tune, for lack of a better term.

I'm not sure I like the whole time-travel element. I felt like I didn't really know what I was supposed to do half the time. I would pass a level and be like.. "Did I miss something?" The levels seem ridiculously big, and the time-travel aspect seems to make them bigger.

I'm all for innovation, and I can see it here, but it just feels like too much.

Let it be known that the original team that developed 1, 2 & 3 (&K) didn't develop this. And it shows.

It's good, but it would be at the bottom of the list for me.

I clicked "No" to if I recommend the game. But I can see where the appeal lies. It just isn't for me, unfortunately.

TLDR: It seems very cluttered. The music seems out of place. And it feels like a fan-made project.

One of the best sonic games ever. There is Nearly a perfect mix of speed and platforming. But some stages can feel like mazes if you don't know where to go. Soundtrack is some of the best in the series! Special stages in sonic games are usually pretty bad but in this game they are very good. You must play this game!

An excellent port of an excellent and complex Sonic game with TWO excellent soundtracks for you to choose (JP or US) with alternate versions of it's levels and a good deal of exploration with alternate endings, everything wrapped up alongside the best Sonic animated videos. Did I mention that it has mods?
This game is way too cheap. Even at full price. Get it.

They should sell the soundtracks, even if just separately, I'd buy them both in a hearbeat.
I'd buy the japanese OST first, tho.

One of the better Sonic games. Excellent soundtrack - actually two for the price of one - and classic gameplay. The level design is occasionally messy, but the time-travel mechanic not only makes for aesthetic changes in the levels, it actually affects the gameplay. Consequently, the levels feel a little bit different every time, more so than in other 2D Sonic games.

This level design is probably the least frustruating and the most relateable out of all sonic games.
Bosses are clever and its weird that there aren't bosses like these anymore.
the future and past system feels fresh and in order to beat the game in the correct way you have to get all chaos emeralds and destory all robot teleporters and metal sonic holorgrams.
it's more about exploration, and finding them in the big levels.
Special stages are probably the easiest that they've ever been, and actually beatable for beginners.

if you didn't play CD i recommend at least giving it a chance, it's the most different 2D sonic out of all, and in my opinion it's better in that way.

Also if you get all chaos emeralds and finish the game in good future you unlock tails for your next playthrough which is useful for looking for the holograms and transporters (you can't get achievements as tails)

It's an alright game in my opinion. If you are into sonic games, I would defiatley pick it up, though the game just wasn't all that fun for me. I'm not a big fan of the sonic games. If you are into fast pace games that aren't too difficult, Sonic CD is worth the money.

As much as this is an excellent port of the original game, I cannot recommend this purchase.
The third entry in the Sonic series will have you throwing your controller against the wall in frustration due to its poor level design, which becomes quite noticeable during the game's final stages.
Approach with caution.

As an advant fan of Sonic the Hedgehog for about, all my life I can very well say that Sonic CD is a fantastic game.

However, it is very different from your typical Sonic game. In which, it's a very unique one.

This game (I find) is the darkest in the series. And I don't mean dark as in guns and devilish creatures (Shadow the Hedgehog) or a general dark story (Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 360).

But it's the presentation that makes this game the darkest.

In this game, you have to find the Time Stones or venture back in time and destroy Eggmans (or Dr. Ivo Robotnik) generators in order to ensure a good future for Little Planet and it's unseen inhabitants.

However, if you fail to do either task, you will ensure a bad future.

A bad future is basically a bad ending. This means Eggman has won; he has ruined all the zones with mechanical machienery. This is evident with the pollution, the evil music (for the US OST anyways..), and overall disgusting look of seeing that nature has been corrupted.

That's why I find it the darkest game in the series (not to mention the creepy images in the sound test.)

Speaking of music, this soundtrack is AMAZING.

There is a common debate over which regional soundtrack is best, as the US s.t. differs from the JP/EU s.t.

I personally LOVE the JP/EU s.t. so much. In fact, I think it may be my favorite Sonic soundtrack ever.

The US one is great as well, it really fits the stages and the boss (threatning music).

While I love a lot of aspects in this game, I do have some problems as well.

One is the level design. I love the level themes, but the execution is..eh. I find that the levels in this game always have some sort of obstacle that stops all momentum. And while that's not bad once in a while, it gets ridicious as the game goes on. One minute you'll be zooming at the speed of sound then BAM! Either an enemy, item capsule, or something stops all that speed. Not to say the other classic sonic games did that, but I feel this one takes the cake in that department.

Another thing I don't care for...the special stages. I don't know if it's just me but I can never seem to get sonic in a good enough position to hit those damn moving ufo's! And not to mention, even when I jump RIGHT next to a blimp, it doesn't count.

I recommend traveling back in time using the posts to get the good ending like I did, because I honestly can't be bothered with those annoying special stages.

Finally, while I love that the bosses in this game are quite (might be some of the most unique bosses in Sonic history honestly), some of these too can get tedious (i'm looking at YOU pinball eggman)

Overall, with a great game, amazing soundtrack, interesting story, and cool levels, Sonic CD is definetly a great Sonic game. Some problems, but still an enjoyable title i'd say.

If I had to rate it, i'd give it a 8.5/10.

A good example of what the Mega CD could do if given the proper consideration.

For the longest time Sonic CD was my #1 favourite video game; a title possessed of a rare quality for the time it was released.

Developed as a showpiece for CD-ROM technology, it was hoped that Sonic CD would pave the way for a new generation of quality disc-based games and whilst it is a fine title in its own right, ultimately the grand vision never materialized like Sega once hoped.

Sonic CD appealed to me as a youngster for its sharp 2D graphics and flourishes of 3D, for its excellent soundtrack (in the European/Japanese version at least) and its robust palette of different levels.

Sharing much in common with the first game in the series, this lesser-known title in Sonic's library consists of 7 different stages interwoven with the theme of time travel. When Sonic passes certain posts in the game world he gains the ability to transport himself through time by gaining enough speed for several seconds (an obvious inspiration from Back to the Future).

Each stage features a design for the current time period (whether it's a good/bad future, present or the past) complete with new colours, different enemy patterns and an alternate arrangement of both the level layout and music. Such variety for a game released in 1993 is stunning (as each level essentially comes in four flavours) and it helps set Sonic CD apart from the generally lacklustre titles that call the Sega Mega CD console home.

Although the method of time travel is clunky, it remains an interesting mechanic and part of the game's advanced challenge as the only way to secure a truly good ending is to visit levels in the past and destroy a robot-producing factory present in each one.

When you add in an impressive 3D bonus stage, a time attack mode and other unlockables that save to your console's internal memory; you've got a truly great Mega CD title that keeps very small company.

This HD remaster on Steam was helmed by wizard programmer Christian Whitehead and is the best way to experience Sonic CD today, and after many years the game is finally reaching the larger audience it deserved on current generation consoles and mobile devices.

The time this game spent as my #1 video game was time admittedly obstructed by nostalgia, as very few people I spoke to then had any knowledge of this special game at all; making the whole thing feel like a more personal experience than usual.

The gameplay isn't as fast or exciting as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the challenge is a bit lax and the overall level design does leave a lot to be desired.

But Sonic CD is still a good game and it's one that has aged remarkbly well thanks to this gorgeous HD remaster.

Easily one of the most fun and unique Sonic games. I'd say it is on the easy side compared to the rest of the 2D Sonic games, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The levels themselves are very well crafted and the game has a stellar soundtrack, switchable between the far superior Japanese and the still pretty good US version. The whole past and future mechanic gives it good replayability, especially since there are like 4 variations per level. It also has a ton of unlockables and an additional mode where Tails is a playable character unlike the original. I've already played it countless times on iOS and Playstation Network, this version is just as good if not better than those. Definitely worth a purchase for any Sonic fan or anyone wanting a solid old school platformer.

One of my favorite games on steam, Sonic CD has held up extremely well since its original release in 1993. This is the rerelease that improved the game and made the overall experience much better than before.
The Ups
-Has more content than original release
-Unique past and future concept
-Amazing soundtrack
-Cool special stages
The Downs
-Not much replay value
-A small one but the pinball boss.
Overall I would reccomend this game to fans of platformers, action, and Sonic fans.

Pros:
- Looks pretty bearing in mind how old it is.
- Great OST, choice of US and JP version with some nightmare inducing songs in the US version.
- Good variety of levels.
- Level design is sometimes good.
- New super peel out mechanic means you can go faster than just spindashing which is pretty useful.
- Special stages in 3D which actually handle pretty well.

Cons:
- Some of the levels are terribly designed e.g. wacky workbench, where it is near impossible to build up speed and you feel like the entire level is actively trying to stop you from getting anywhere.
- Pointless time travel mechanic where you have to find a sign to go to the past, pass through it, and gain a good speed for about 10 seconds which is VERY hard in some levels unless they have areas designed for you to do this. You travel to the past and have to explore the entire level (bearing in the 10 minute time limit) to find some objects to blow up so you can get a good ending. Hard when past signs are rarer than future signs and half the time you end up accidentally going to the future because you can't slow down, which has no real benefit other than a lack of enemies when you clear out the objects in the past. You have to do all this crap to get a good ending for each level, although I heard you can just do it the old fashioned way, getting enough rings and doing the special stage at the end of each level.
- Some bosses are pretty badly designed or a massive pain to beat, like the pinball boss.

EARLY IMPRESSIONS

This game should be relabeled Sonic CD Remastered because it's been completely overhauled & runs at high resolutions @ a very solid 60fps. Even the old FMV sequences are in HD & look a ton better. This is probably the best version of Sonic CD you can get & even surpasses the original in every single way.

It's still kind of confusing when compared to other 2D Sonic games. The goal isn't to reach the end as fast as possible. You have to find some wierd projection machines & destroy them & then do something... I dunno, really.

All in all, it's still a great game & worth your time if you're a Sonic fan or just interested in a retro platform game.

It was not really that much of a long game but I really do love the time travel idea. The soundtrack is great. It's a shame though that they replaced the Japanese vocal songs for instrumental versions. The intro and outro animations were well done. Definitely a Sonic game which I've enjoyed and can recommend.
