"What I personally think is one of the best games of all time. Great music, memorable characters, surprisingly rich story and gameplay all from one man."

评测

“All in all, Cave Story is an incredible game that I'm sure I will be playing again and again for the rest of my life. It succeeds at telling a great story, providing fantastic run-and-gun gameplay, and a huge world to explore, and it does so with a style and technique all its own.”
95/100 – Destructoid.com

“It's a must-play masterpiece for anyone who like classic action games -- or any kind of action game, really. The only real question is which will amaze you more: That this is the work of a single man, or that they actually do make 'em like this anymore.”
100/100 – 1UP.com

“If this game had been released on the NES 20 years ago, it would be recalled by a generation of players as a high point of the 8-bit era.”
90/100 – Eurogamer

关于这款游戏

Arguably the most well-known indie game of all time, Cave Story features a completely original storyline wrapped with personality, mystery and hours of fast-paced fun. Cave Story is an action-adventure game from the critically acclaimed independent designer, Daisuke Amaya--or Pixel to his fans. Overflowing with unmatched charm and character, Cave Story takes you into a rare world where a curious race of innocent rabbit-like creatures, called Mimigas, run free.

You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you're in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can't remember his own name.

Run, jump, shoot, fly and explore your way through a massive action-adventure reminiscent of classic 8- and 16-bit games. Take control and learn the origins of this world’s power, stop the delusional villain and save the Mimiga!

The original "indie" title of PC. Made in 2004, it was released as freeware and was only in Japanese. It got translated by fans of the game and became one of the cult-classics for PC Indie gaming. All of this was during a time when Steam was barely a thing, and most indie games were free.

This game has aged, and with its age has become more amazing. I have only been dragged back into this game more and more over the years, and about a year ago I was craving the gameplay and story from this game. I downloaded the freeware title; however, I soon came to realize the updated, upgraded version was out, so I bought it. I don't regret a thing.

The game sports a classic 2D style of shooter. You can get more health by collecting capsules, some are hidden, others aren't. Each weapon you obtain can gain levels, each level unlocking increased attack or fighting styles for the weapon. You get experience from killing enemies, and enemies will take the experience back if they hit you. Speaking of enemies: this game has a lot. I think there are close to 100 different fightable enemies over the course of the entire game.

On to the story. The story is very well designed and I cannot remember a game before this one that was able to keep me engaged long enough to care to remember the names of characters or their personalities. This game made me want to look after the lives of the characters, and will often torture you with suspense. It's a very linear sort of story, but the world is like that of Metroid. You can go around and complete smaller side-quests or just continue the main story. Some side-quests or small actions have more influence on the story than one would originally think.

On a scale of one to ten, I'd have to rate this a 9/10. It's a very well polished adventure through the denizens that live in the world of Cave Story.

Probably my favorite Indie game of all time. First played this on the Wii, tryed the free game on the website, and lastly on Cave Story+. Getting all three versions of the game was definitely worth. Used to play this game during school, in computer class. Probably finished it like over 10 times. It was THAT fun.

The game may be short, but the dark story, characters, and the old-school pixelated graphics make up for it so much. Some parts are very teary eye, at least for me. Pick this game up, you'll enjoy it. I promise.

This is an improvement of the original, which is one of my favorite games of all time. Options for more modern music and graphics, although I prefer the original music myself, unlockable challenges, three... pretty unique endings, one of which you have to do some stuff to unlock and finish a really hard level that even I haven't managed to finish, and a variety of challenges that vary in fun. Compared to the free but unstable version with the fact that you have to figure out how to install a language patch to play it, it's worth it. 8.5/10, might want to check some gameplay vids to see if this is a game you'd like.

There are few games that I can call perfect and Cave Story + is one of those games. The soundtrack is breathtaking, the story is unforgettable, the gameplay is incredibly solid and well-polished, and the graphics are crisp and clean.

I am not criticizing the main game or the original developer Studio Pixel here. The gameplay and story, in both original and new versions, is actually top notch. My only issue with the core game is that acquiring the best ending can be somewhat cryptic.

I recommend Cave Story, but overall I do not recommend Nicalis' Cave Story+ unless you can get it very cheap. A huge reason for this non-recommendation being that the game has been out for 10 years on the internet for free.

Cave Story+ positives
  • Steamworks API is nice. Stats, playtime, etc displayed on your Steam profile. Good.
  • Achievements give the game more replayability if you're a completionist.
  • Infinitely superior options menu and controller support. Just launch the game from your Steam library, no dealing with files and language patches like the free version.
  • Optional double resolution graphics. Stays faithful to the originals and is eye-pleasing (There are even different graphics for Christmas and Halloween- nice touch).
  • Optional remade music from the WiiWare and 3DS versions of the game. I personally like the original chiptunes.

Cave Story+ negatives
  • Price tag. I actually got this game for free as a gift, so I don't mind. It's your choice whether you want to spend the money on a free game at its core.
  • Developer's promise of "Future content updates". To my knowledge, this game has only recieved one or two patches and was eventually ported to Linux. Seems dead for the last two years in terms of actual content.
  • Some extras advertised such as Boss Rush mode are actually near-exact duplicates (in code) from community mods for the original version. The developer's reliance on community toolsets and mods screams laziness and unprofessionalism.
  • New English translation can be seen as a downside to some players. Various phrases and names have been changed from the original fan translation.

Cave Story+ is a decent novelty for existing fans, and likely the most friendly way to introduce new players to the game. If you like the new graphics and music, Steam intergration with achievements, improved options and controller support, then feel free to give this a go (preferably in a sale or bundle). If none of that matters to you, just play the original free version and save your money.

Especially, DO NOT pick up this if you are expecting content updates, there are next to none (I've had Cave Story+ for about 3 years). If you are intending to buy this simply because of the extra modes or difficulties, the free version already has them in some form or another as mods. The free version also has a lot more community content and resources.

Overall a good game and nothing was enough to make me hate it, but there are still several design choices that keep in from being a 100% must-have in my book. Most of it is fine, but once we get to the end of the Sand Zone and get to Rabid Toroko we start to hit some problems.
For one, Toroko is a pretty disorienting curveball in herself; depending on what she decides to do the fight can either be quick and painless or teeth-grindingly annoying. And to top it off, after beating her you don't have the opportunity to heal for a lengthy period of time afterward (likely trying to see if they can force you to use the Life Pot item that fully recovers your health just once in mid-game; which by the way is a HUGE mistake).
However, that isn't close to being the worst part. That comes immediately after: the Labyrinth. I hate the whole level in its entirety (and no, not for Monster X. He was actually the good thing to come out of it in my opinion). Its actual design is a bit jarring at points with several stunts that require almost perfect timing to pull off, but the biggest reason I hate it is that it can screw you over from 100% completion in several ways, all of which can occur VERY easily.
The first example is when someone falls into one of the rooms as you enter; you can either talk to him and pick up something now or ignore him and move on for something else later. To even have a chance at 100%, you have to be a jerk and ignore the guy, going into the next room (which, by the way, has a boss fight almost immediately). And what makes this an even bigger problem is that the jump required to make it past him is very easy to miss, with no chance whatsoever to climb back up without talking to the guy who fell or resetting and trying the jump again (and even when you do eventually make it, the remainder of the Labyrinth will be an even bigger burden on you.
The boss following that jerkishly designed jump isn't too bad; in fact it's a cakewalk with the right weapon choices, but what follows soon after is my least favorite segment of the entire game at the very end of the level, which is flooded with water that continually rises and falls as you go, and this is where that one bit I mentioned earlier starts to come further into play. If you went down to meet the guy who fell, the item you need to have any chance at completion will somehow magically vanish from this room (how does that make any sense?). If you didn't, you won't have better air movement to arm you against the Island Core, where the designer apparently didn't realize that having to deal with constant water physics that make no sense paired with the endless attacks and getting pulled and pushed around at will doesn't point toward a very good boss fight.
Following that (by the way, also with no healing opportunities after an annoying fight) is the final stretch of the area, the Waterway, which introduces water currents that pulls you along. The area itself isn't too bad minus the huge abundance of spikes, but another very likely chance to miss 100% AND a reasonable save point is right around the corner, requiring about a split second's notice to jump off a single block out into a shack before the currents catch you again, and following that is the labyrinth's fifth and last boss (which I hate for the opposite reason of the Core; being too easy and coming right the heck out of nowhere anyways).
Thankfully, the game stops being jerkish after that point until the very end if you happen to discover the hidden level you were working toward to get the best ending, and long story short to first-timers... This area WILL be the bane of your sanity. You have been warned.

The game is a lot of fun and features an interesting (but simple and predictable) plot, but it is really hard and often frustrating. The gameplay is like a mixture between Metroid and Zelda with a pronounced focus on storytelling. But the game world doesn't really fit together, for example, the bunny people (Mimigas) couldn't convince me. I addition, there are unforeseeable and unintended consequences of some actions. I for one had to look up how to save Curly after failing several times.
