Reviews

“All in all, Cave Story is an incredible game that I'm sure I will be playing again and again for the rest of my life. It succeeds at telling a great story, providing fantastic run-and-gun gameplay, and a huge world to explore, and it does so with a style and technique all its own.”
95/100 – Destructoid.com

“It's a must-play masterpiece for anyone who like classic action games -- or any kind of action game, really. The only real question is which will amaze you more: That this is the work of a single man, or that they actually do make 'em like this anymore.”
100/100 – 1UP.com

“If this game had been released on the NES 20 years ago, it would be recalled by a generation of players as a high point of the 8-bit era.”
90/100 – Eurogamer

About This Game

Arguably the most well-known indie game of all time, Cave Story features a completely original storyline wrapped with personality, mystery and hours of fast-paced fun. Cave Story is an action-adventure game from the critically acclaimed independent designer, Daisuke Amaya--or Pixel to his fans. Overflowing with unmatched charm and character, Cave Story takes you into a rare world where a curious race of innocent rabbit-like creatures, called Mimigas, run free.

You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you're in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can't remember his own name.

Run, jump, shoot, fly and explore your way through a massive action-adventure reminiscent of classic 8- and 16-bit games. Take control and learn the origins of this world’s power, stop the delusional villain and save the Mimiga!

This is my favorite computer game of all time. By a team of developers Cave Story would be a masterpiece, but Daisuke Amaya built this entirely on his own.

Unequivocal 10/10. Gaming's crowning achievement.

The original "indie" title of PC. Made in 2004, it was released as freeware and was only in Japanese. It got translated by fans of the game and became one of the cult-classics for PC Indie gaming. All of this was during a time when Steam was barely a thing, and most indie games were free.

This game has aged, and with its age has become more amazing. I have only been dragged back into this game more and more over the years, and about a year ago I was craving the gameplay and story from this game. I downloaded the freeware title; however, I soon came to realize the updated, upgraded version was out, so I bought it. I don't regret a thing.

The game sports a classic 2D style of shooter. You can get more health by collecting capsules, some are hidden, others aren't. Each weapon you obtain can gain levels, each level unlocking increased attack or fighting styles for the weapon. You get experience from killing enemies, and enemies will take the experience back if they hit you. Speaking of enemies: this game has a lot. I think there are close to 100 different fightable enemies over the course of the entire game.

On to the story. The story is very well designed and I cannot remember a game before this one that was able to keep me engaged long enough to care to remember the names of characters or their personalities. This game made me want to look after the lives of the characters, and will often torture you with suspense. It's a very linear sort of story, but the world is like that of Metroid. You can go around and complete smaller side-quests or just continue the main story. Some side-quests or small actions have more influence on the story than one would originally think.

On a scale of one to ten, I'd have to rate this a 9/10. It's a very well polished adventure through the denizens that live in the world of Cave Story.

This game has about everything you could want in a skill-based side-scroller. Buy a controller, map your keys and don't get hit.

Probably my favorite Indie game of all time. First played this on the Wii, tryed the free game on the website, and lastly on Cave Story+. Getting all three versions of the game was definitely worth. Used to play this game during school, in computer class. Probably finished it like over 10 times. It was THAT fun.

The game may be short, but the dark story, characters, and the old-school pixelated graphics make up for it so much. Some parts are very teary eye, at least for me. Pick this game up, you'll enjoy it. I promise.

I do not know what is in this game. It captivates specific retro styling and distinctive music, and it's all topped with an engaging story. The game also contains a lot of flavor and hidden secrets that give a lot of satisfaction. And it is difficult. Very. I do not recommend playing at a high level of difficulty. And even though there is nothing revolutionary, the game is great. If someone is not sure whether to buy it then you can always download the original version for free from the website of the author.

This is an improvement of the original, which is one of my favorite games of all time. Options for more modern music and graphics, although I prefer the original music myself, unlockable challenges, three... pretty unique endings, one of which you have to do some stuff to unlock and finish a really hard level that even I haven't managed to finish, and a variety of challenges that vary in fun. Compared to the free but unstable version with the fact that you have to figure out how to install a language patch to play it, it's worth it. 8.5/10, might want to check some gameplay vids to see if this is a game you'd like.

There are few games that I can call perfect and Cave Story + is one of those games. The soundtrack is breathtaking, the story is unforgettable, the gameplay is incredibly solid and well-polished, and the graphics are crisp and clean.

While the gameplay is fun and evokes classics like Metroid, I dislike how this game tells its story, how it practically forces the player into multiple playthroughs through obtuse, unsignalled decision points that lock them out of certain content and endings.

This is an excellent game with alot of detail into it.
At the reviews from the pros mention: The game does feel a hell of a lot like a SNES game with the graphics controll and looks.
The gameplay is really great too the weapons have a sort of upgrade system in which they can level up 3 times with a 4th bar that can be maxed as a sort of buffer space since whenever you get hit your guns lose experience which ranks up the difficulty slightly later on in the game if you have taken too much damage to cause your weapon to level one.

The story is what makes this game. Unlike alot of other games with a great story the creator has put a whole lot of effot into making the story and characters fun and enjoyable as the characters are neither too much of one characteristic or too little of a characteristic that would define them.

The downside is that the first few times you play you would probably end up with a bad ending as the event that causes it is a little hard to figure out what the event would be.

Over all though this is the game that Phill Fish had ripped off (along with paper mario) before he contracted Ebola, Cried and quit the gaming industry to white knight for a ♥♥♥♥ty SJW.

A unique experience, with tons of secrets. Found it quite challenging at times, but it made the victory that much sweeter. A great nostalgic game for those who want to journey back for a taste of the past.

Cave Story+ is an incredible 2D action platformer. The gameplay is perfect, and you almost never have problems controlling Quote. One of the best parts about this game is that its difficulty is not artificial in the slightest. Every time you die, you know exactly what you did wrong that caused you to die. But most importantly, it's just flat-out fun to play. I recommend Cave Story+ to anyone who likes retro-style platformers, or even platformers in general.

Cave Story is beautiful, well-designed, moving, and deep. It's exceptional on all levels and offers something for everyone. This remastered version is the same as the original, but with sharper graphics. It is highly recommended.
