Reviews

“All in all, Cave Story is an incredible game that I'm sure I will be playing again and again for the rest of my life. It succeeds at telling a great story, providing fantastic run-and-gun gameplay, and a huge world to explore, and it does so with a style and technique all its own.”
95/100 – http://www.destructoid.com/review-cave-story-wiiware--169033.phtml
“It's a must-play masterpiece for anyone who like classic action games -- or any kind of action game, really. The only real question is which will amaze you more: That this is the work of a single man, or that they actually do make 'em like this anymore.”
100/100 – http://www.1up.com/reviews/cave-story-wii-review
“If this game had been released on the NES 20 years ago, it would be recalled by a generation of players as a high point of the 8-bit era.”
90/100 – Eurogamer

About This Game

Arguably the most well-known indie game of all time, Cave Story features a completely original storyline wrapped with personality, mystery and hours of fast-paced fun. Cave Story is an action-adventure game from the critically acclaimed independent designer, Daisuke Amaya--or Pixel to his fans. Overflowing with unmatched charm and character, Cave Story takes you into a rare world where a curious race of innocent rabbit-like creatures, called Mimigas, run free.
You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you're in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can't remember his own name.

The quintessential 2D platformer made with indie blood and sweat. A fun and challenging experience not to be missed!

This game is good up to some point. Then it gets annoying and horribly at that.

So many tired indie concepts. This guy really needs to come up with something new.

The game itself is a pretty good platformer. There's a minor shooting and bullet dodging aspect like any other platformer. The environments are pretty interesting and the tiles are done seamlessly where they are detailed, but not too detailed that you are distracted (like getting hit by a bullet because it gets lost in the background). Movement is also pretty smooth and fast paced so that you never feel dragged down. I didn't feel any padding for length that happens in some simplistic games similar to this one (you know where enemies keep spawning, repeating rooms, etc.) One criticism about the gameplay itself is that I felt the difficulty jumps a little bit between bosses and levels, but I won't say much about that to not spoil that certain boss. It's a fun game with good mechanics. But does that justify it? Now... for the main criticism I have about this game.

Boring plot. I couldn't keep engaged because I was like, "not this ♥♥♥♥ again." Straight up copy of Undertale. Completely unacceptable. These indie developers need to stop copying each other and actually try making an honest and original game. This Chinese developer literally stole everything (when will the Chinese stop?). Underground. Protagonist with unknown history. Evil flower. Squat jokester with a weird eye that turns out to be the "antagonist." Innocent long-eared animals that turn rabid/evil. Funny robots. Quirky characters and relationships. Do I need to list more? Please. When will the Chinese actually be original and stop flooding the indie market with copy-paste games? Pass on this game. It's just like Avatar or Transformers. A fun blockbuster for boring summer days, but are they worth your money? I think not. Play Undertale. I guess the only benefit of the Chinese copying us is that they will always be militaristically behind so we can finally end this in WWIII.

For Takeshima Island!

I've only played a little (And by little I mean 30+ hours) of this game, and still have yet to get the games true ending (Stuck on the guy whose name starts with a B, you know who I mean if you went for the true ending) however, out of what I played I can say that this is a contender for one of the best games I have played in a VERY long time, and for the 2nd time in history, I shall make a genuinely in-depth, kind of serious-ish review.

You start off with a cutscene of a guy named Kazuma (Played by Will Smith) using a computer to contact someone named Sue (Played by Stephen Hawking) saying hes trapped in a room, then you start the game in a cave. You control someone who I can't say a single word about without spoiling something, and get past some bats and rabbit blob things. You then get your first gun, the Pistol Star, which starts of about as powerful as a leaf, and at lvl 3 is probably powerful enough to decimate someones molecules.

The game gradually get more and more interesting, revealing a crazy plan by a doctor (Played by a doctor) and much more I refuse to spoil.

THE GAMEPLAY:
Despite being a fairly story-heavy game, Cave Story+ actually has very fun gameplay, which consists of platforming and shooting things, simple enough, but its got depth to it. A particularly interesting thing is the leveling system, you see like most games you can level up your weapons HOWEVER this game has a twist... If you take damage you actually lose experience, and your weapons can de-level. This makes taking damage a bigger problem then usual, cause even if you have a lot of health, you still risk becoming weaker. Plus the game is actually pretty challenging in many places, mainly the last bosses, harder version of a level you encounter when going for the true ending, and the absolute nightmare of a true final level, which is a pure clusterf*ck filled with spikes and enemies around ever corner, with some very hard boss fights.
Its got some nice platforming I guess.
Oh and heres a very important tip:
When it comes to the true ending, you should use a guide, I don't care how smart or clever you are, its almost impossible to figure out the cryptic BS required for the true ending, its so absurd, I'm shocked anyone ever found it out in the first place. Another thing: Despite the true ending being much happier and better, I recommend getting the normal ending first, it has some important and tragic moments you can't see if you do the true ending. Plus doing the game twice prepares you for the true last level better, although you will always get f*cked over.

THE STORY:
Considering its half the title, you might expect the story in Cave Story to be good. And it is really good. Its an engaging deep plot with some very tragic moments and twists, and one very evil villain. All the characters are likable in some form, and the tensions are pretty high I guess. Unfortunately I can't go in-depth without ruining everything. So yeah thats all I can say, though the story revealed in the true ending I will say, is tragic.

THE MUSIC:
Unlike most people, I do indeed prefer the remastered music, though if you don't, you can change it to the original music in the settings. However there are a few tracks I might prefer the original version of, mainly Last Battle, which is as good as the remastered version, maybe better, though I have a hard time deciding. All in all both the original and remastered soundtracks are great, but I recommend you avoid the "new" soundtrack like its the bubonic plague.

THE GRAPHICS:
The original graphics were great for one persons work, and they have a nice charm to them, but the new ones are possibly some of the best pixel-art I have ever seen. Expect lots of great scenery.

THE CONS:
As amazing as this game is, its not perfect, it has some pretty big flaws, mainly:
-Unskippable cutscenes, if you die quite a few times on a boss, you will have to sit through all the pre-battle scenes, you can mash z and x to basically fast forward it, but it can still take a bit, especially on the boss at the end of Sand Zone, Jesus.
-The true ending, as I said earlier, good luck ever finding out how to get it on your own, I know a true ending should require some extra work, but who the hell could figure that sh*t out?
-Ballos, one of the hardest bosses I have ever faced, a 4-phase fight filled with death, and its at the end of a super difficult level you have to do ALL OVER AGAIN if you die. I find the fight epic, but holy ♥♥♥♥, couldn't you place a checkpoint? I think the satisfaction I will get when I beat him might be worth it though

All in all, this is one of the most well-crafted and all around amazing games ever made, its one of the few games I can says excels in every possible aspect, and it is totally worth your money.
9/10.
But seriously ♥♥♥♥ Ballos

Cave story is my favorite game of all time.

I remember beating the freeware version over and over again as a kid (and downloading it onto the school computers so that I could hide and play during events)

to date I have beaten the game 14 times and have not gotten bored once.

recently I started playing the + version and I beat it 2-3 times trying to get the best ending and messing up each time *sobs*

aparently when saveing curly you can't save her and then leave her in that cabin after giving her mouth to mouth.
...and I find this out after beating the undead core for the upteenth time

10/10 would fail at getting the best ending again

There's lots of good things about this game, read other reviews if you want to hear about them. I find the jumping to be immensely frustrating. I've never screamed "JUMP YOU IDIOT" at my monitor as often as when I'm playing this game. Either there's an input delay or it doesn't register jumps at the edges of platforms. Wildly frustrating and takes away every bit of fun that I have. I finally gave up in the water level where the current accelerated me and I couldn't see spikes in front of me because I was pushed to the edge of the screen. I'm done and I won't be finishing this game.

DO NOT BUY FOR MAC!

The Linux (and probably Windows?) version seem to work fine, but the Mac version crashes immediately on startup due to what appears to be a really simple problem. It's been broken for well over a year now and there seems to be no interest in fixing it even though they still sell copies.

Straight up a masterclass in an individual’s performance to make such a ground-breaking game in the sense of incorporating such a heavy use of pixel art in a game that has no doubt been an inspiration for many an indie game in recent days.

Bear in mind that the man who created this had to do it all by himself in every department such as programming the frustrating AI enemies, composing each of the great pieces of music and even doing the design and implementation of his graphical art style.

When you look at it in a sense, Cave Story is a game that deserves more praise than it gets. Far more praise than a game such as Undertale received as it was indeed made by one man as well but the gap in technology to do so between a game made in 2004 and the latter 2015 is truly an achievement.

This game is known as the grandaddy of Indie games for a reason. If you are a fan of metroidvania style games then you will likely enjoy this game. Cave Story, despite freeware, is completely worth paying for the "+" version which includes a variety of additional content including remastered graphics (which are essentially a higher resolution alternative to the orignal's) and soundtrack. There is plenty of replay value esspecially if achievement hunting is your type of thing. On the matter of achievements, this game boasts some of the most rare and difficult achievements available. If the game strikes your fancy then these achievements feel really good to achieve. Be warned though, one of the achievements is currently broken and will not unlock so if you intend of completing it then keep that in mind. With that said, there is a lot to this game and I highly recommend it.

This is a great little platformer. It looks good, it sounds good, it handles well, and it's about as compelling as it needs to be, story-wise. As with many of the platformers of the era it's emulating, I eventually lost interest when I got stuck about where to go next, but I got hours of gameplay out of it, and it was a lot of fun.
