"What I personally think is one of the best games of all time. Great music, memorable characters, surprisingly rich story and gameplay all from one man."

Reviews

“All in all, Cave Story is an incredible game that I'm sure I will be playing again and again for the rest of my life. It succeeds at telling a great story, providing fantastic run-and-gun gameplay, and a huge world to explore, and it does so with a style and technique all its own.”
95/100 – Destructoid.com

“It's a must-play masterpiece for anyone who like classic action games -- or any kind of action game, really. The only real question is which will amaze you more: That this is the work of a single man, or that they actually do make 'em like this anymore.”
100/100 – 1UP.com

“If this game had been released on the NES 20 years ago, it would be recalled by a generation of players as a high point of the 8-bit era.”
90/100 – Eurogamer

About This Game

Arguably the most well-known indie game of all time, Cave Story features a completely original storyline wrapped with personality, mystery and hours of fast-paced fun. Cave Story is an action-adventure game from the critically acclaimed independent designer, Daisuke Amaya--or Pixel to his fans. Overflowing with unmatched charm and character, Cave Story takes you into a rare world where a curious race of innocent rabbit-like creatures, called Mimigas, run free.

You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you're in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can't remember his own name.

Run, jump, shoot, fly and explore your way through a massive action-adventure reminiscent of classic 8- and 16-bit games. Take control and learn the origins of this world’s power, stop the delusional villain and save the Mimiga!

The original Cave Story was released only in Japan for the PC in 2004. There are several Fan-translated versions for this game, now known as an "indie". Cave Story+ is all that and much more.

Advancing on the cult classic, Cave Story+ has the same thrilling fights, deep characters, and most of all, a stunning story. You might not know it on the first play through, but your choices and actions greatly affect which of the three endings you get. I won't spoil more than that though, the rest is up to you. Choose from various weapons to fight hordes of enemies. However, you only have room for 5 weapons in the entire game, so choose wisely; I recommend you try all of them at least once. There are tons of items, enemies, and characters to interact with. Cave Story is a adventure and exploration type shooter and platformer in third person. Cave Story+ doesn't change this but adds an extra story, challenges, the ability to change the graphics (between the original and the new designs) and music (original, remastered, new). Cave Story+ has great music, beautiful graphics, is overall an excellent game. Gameplay is fun and easy, and to suit you better, you can change the difficulty.

So, tl;dr, Cave Story+ advances on the legend that was Cave Story and is well worth ~$10.00.

Cave Story+ at first turned me off because of the graphics, but I still decided to give it a shot and the gameplay and storyline took over and made the rest irrelevant. This is not a short game by any means, and it's a very fun game with a smooth and fluid action. The gameplay adds new powers and new guns are you progress through it. The bosses become harder and harder and by the end you are very satisfied. I loved the ending, but unfortunately, I did not get the good ending. I'm not playing through it a second time on the hardest difficulty and trying to get to the good ending.

One of my favorite games of all times.

Any fan of Metroidvania games will feel right at home here. The game focuses more on the action and and the story than the exploration itself, which to me is a big plus when it comes to these kind of games. Great soundtrack, Very nice challenge, And great replayibility.

Any old school fan should get this!

The game I've loved since I was in my mid-teens...where do I begin?

A platformer originally made in 2004 by one Japanese man named Daisuke Amaya. He has made several other games in this retro style, but this is one of his largest, and obviously most successful, projects.

What I love: The retro theme, the silky-smooth gameplay, the music, the corny little story, the items, the endings, the characters, the secrets, and the fact that you can still pick up the original for free. Legally!

What I hate: I can't have sex with it ._.

If you like platformers, I would give the free version a look. And if you love that, then consider throwing some money at this version :) There's extra little game modes, and the graphics are given a facelift. Besides, Pixel-san needs more recognition! HYPE THE PIXEL!

Cave Story + is a really enjoyable game.

The gameplay is very smooth, the graphics are good for this type of game, the levels are fine too.
The history is interesting and funny, like the most characters in this game. Some cool bosses.
Your character gets new weapons that change the way you defeat your enemies, and the weapon upgrade system is something different from usual, because it can downgrade if you suffer an attack.

Well, this game deserves to be played. I loved it because I missed games like these. Reminds me of the 8/16 bit generation.

Oh yes, and the soundtrack is really good too. I love it.

OVerview: 2d Side Scrolling Action/Platformer

The Good:

+ On the surface this game may seem like a standard 2d action game, however once you dig deeper you realize there is more to this little game than you originally thought. As you play you are given choices throughout the game that not only impact the story but even what weapons you can use. All of this leads to some good replaybility and is probably the games' biggest asset

+The game has somewhat of a unique upgrade system for the weapons you use. As you kill enemies they drop experience that will increase your weapons level. Each weapon has 3 levels each one getting progressively better. However if you get hit by an enemy your weapon level decreases adding an extra level of complexity to the game.

+ A variety of different weapons that fit your play style or situation.

+ The game controls are fantastic and feel very responsive

+ The game has some really great boss battles, the further you progress in the game the more diverse and unique they become

+The game provides a lot of different modes after you beat the game. Each mode requires you to beat it in a certain amount of time, the better you do, the more achievements you get. This further adds to the reaplayability to the game.

The Average:

Level design and objectives are not that good. Most of the levels have you running to one end of the map only to run back to the beginning again to complete certain objectives and advance the story. This adds nothing to the gameplay and seems only to be used to pad out the game length. It gets tiring after a while.

The Bad:

- I really disliked the story and characters. Nothing seems to make sense and about half way through the game I couldn't care what happens to anybody.

Conclusion

I had a lot of fun with the game, I just wish the levels were better designed. The extra modes provided are also fun.

By far my all-time favourite game. Ever.

Playing as a mute boy (huehuehue), you forge great friendships, shoot stuff, and collect Doritos to level up.

With 2 additional soundtracks, remastered graphics, new difficulty settings, and an all-new gamemode, this is the ultimate can't-stop-playing retro-style game.

∞/10.

Didn't really enjoy it plus not really a fan of side-scrollers. Lacks comedy flare that Breath of Death and Cthulu saves the World has
