- Kotaku

"Torchlight is a vibrant, fun, steampunky world, and exploring it is an absolutely addictive pleasure."

4.5/5 - Joystiq

"Not to be missed by anyone who considers themselves a fan of the proud tradition of action RPGs"

5/5 - Gamespy

9/10 - Destructoid

Steam Workshop

Torchlight 2 now fully supports Steam Workshop. A new launcher synchronizes any mods you have subscribed to, and lets you customize their activation state and loading priority. In addition, when playing Internet games in the lobby, you will be able to filter modded games by mod combination, and with a single button click, subscribe to those mods. Torchlight 2 will then restart, synchronize them, and activate them before returning you to the game.

When playing modded games, you can view your mod history, any previously played mods, and the impact disabling mods may have on your character.

We've tried to make the process as seamless as possible, with a focus on allowing modded multiplayer games with a minimum of fuss.

GUTS

GUTS is our in-house development tool, now fully integrated with Steam Workshop. You can publish directly to Steam Workshop when you compile your mod, making it available immediately for others to play.

We've also added a special tool to GUTS designed to convert pre-GUTS mods into the official mod format, with an eye toward making the transition much easier for our ambitious early modders.

You can learn more about using GUTS here.

New Content

This release also includes new game content!

  • The NetherRealm tileset - new NetherRealm dungeons can be found via portals throughout the world
  • New Monsters
  • New armor sets
  • New weapons
  • New pets - including the Headcrab!
  • New endgame map content
  • Some additional new dungeons in New Game plus modes in large overworld areas

About This Game

The award-winning action RPG is back, bigger and better than ever! Torchlight II takes you back into the quirky, fast-paced world of bloodthirsty monsters, bountiful treasures, and sinister secrets - and, once again, the fate of the world is in your hands!
Torchlight II captures all the flavor and excitement of the original game - while expanding the world and adding the features players wanted most, including online and LAN co-op multiplayer. Torchlight II is fast, fun, and filled to the brim with action and loot. Adventure solo or online with your friends!

Key Features:

  • Multiplayer - Play co-op with your friends via LAN or over the Internet for free. No subscriptions, no item sales. Our new matchmaking service lets you find friends, start new games, and join existing games. And, as always, you can play single-player offline as well.
  • Customizable Characters - Players will create and customize a character from one of four brand new classes. Each class can be played as either male or female, with customized cosmetic features and looks to make each individual character stand out. All new skills and loot give loads of opportunity for unique character builds.
  • Moddability - TorchED, the Torchlight II editor, will give players the ability to create their own mods, adding even more content to the world. Have your friends download the same mod and play together. TorchED will be available as a separate download very shortly after launch.
  • New User Interface - Torchlight II boasts a new and improved user interface, designed to be easier than ever for new players to pick up and play. This intuitive interface ensures you can focus on playing the game the way you want to.
  • Open World - We're not only in the town of Torchlight anymore! Explore vast overland areas and multiple hub towns, fight through rain, snow, day and night. Our level randomization ensures new layouts, paths, loot, and monsters every time you play.
  • New Game Plus - In New Game Plus, the game's not over until you say it is. Once you've beaten Torchlight II's primary campaign, you can start again with the same character for a significantly greater challenge. You'll keep all of the skills, gold, and gear you worked so hard for!
  • Pets & Fishing - These popular features make their return in Torchlight II in improved form. More choices, better effects, and your pet will still make the run to town to sell your loot so you don’t have to.

Great dungeon crawler game. Very flexible and moddable, in stark contrast to the other more well known ARPG. Excellent single player experience.

A nitpick would be that while the game sports random map generator for most maps, Act I is always this type of terrain, Act II is always this type of terrain, etc.. I would prefer more randomness.

I wish Steam would allow neutral reviews, because that is how I feel about this game. It's only my second aRPG after Victor Vran and it greatly suffers by comparison. I will examine this game in terms of the Story, Presentation, Gameplay and Loot.

Story
Story in this game is just passable but very forgettable, I only played through the story a few days ago but I have already forgotten most of it. I can remember that it is some generic "save the world from some random but super powerful antagonist" dribble but beyond that I can't remember a single character, plot twist (not even sure if there were any or not) or an event. It's not terrible but you really wouldn't want to play through it multiple times.

Presentation
Presentation is good in this game, both sound and visuals are quite decent.

Gameplay
Gameplay is a mixed bag, I have only played as the Outlander since I cannot stand the idea of playing through the story more than two times and while it is a serviceable character, most of the abilities seem to be worthless and you end up shoehorned into a build that works. This gets old fairly quickly since you end up approaching every situation the same way. Experimentation is hampered by an extremely mediocre respec system.

Loot
I have made this a standalone point because loot and farming is an integral part of games like this for me. I have enjoyed this aspect in all entries of Borderlands and I enjoyed it in Victor Vran. I did not enjoy it in Torchlight 2. Farming and min-maxing gear in Torchlight 2 is just bad, in my 55 hours in the game which included two playthroughs, multiple Mapmaker levels and some dedicated farming I have not picked up a single legendary item. Now you might say that they are legendary and that justifies their rarity but they are worthless to me as a loot horder/min-maxer if I can never get to play with them.

Enchanting is another letdown, it is an RNG plagued affair, both in terms of finding the enchanter you are looking for and the enchanting itself. Say, you are trying to enchant an item of armor with "goldfind" using the "Lucky" enchanter. Well, RNG decides whether you actually enchant with "goldfind" which is only one of 4 of his possible enchantments, it will also decide how great the value of the enchantment is. What's that? You didn't get the enchantment you wanted? Well, that will be 10k gold to disenchant, thank you very much and you can't disenchant a specific enchantment, you have to disenchant all the enchantments at the same time, if one out 3 enchantments was bad and the other two desirable, you will lose all three if you disenchant. Thoroughly disappointing mechanic.

Torchlight 2 is not a bad game but it's not a particularly good one either. The story is just middling, the presentation decent, the gameplay is repetitive and the loot mechanics which is what gives this sort of games their longevity and replayability are thoroughly disappointing.

My top 5 favorite ARPG of all time. Such a beautiful game, full of loot and everything a action role player kid could want. I never get tired of playing through and co oping with random strangers. This game is so amazing. Thank you so much.

Roughly equivalent to Diablo 2, it plays more smoothly and has more cartoonish graphics. Very enjoyable dungeon delving for random loot and power. Some added crafting options would have been nice and I didn't like the change to the way gems are merged. Fishing is still fun and can be useful. With the free editor even more fun can be gained for a little dedication to learning the software. I recomend the game for lovers of dungeon delvers and mod builders, but there's not much originallity to it.

After getting to the point where i was forcing myself to play it, just to see how far i could get, i finally decided to take a break from this game.

what it get's right, it really gets right. the music is amazing, in these types of games i usually throw on my own music, but i had NO problem listening to this for hours on end. the graphics are stylish, and overall the presentation is pretty great.

but i have one major problem, abilities. OH. MY. GOD.

in other games of this type (diablo, PoE, Marvel Heroes) there are a plethora of abilities, and each one adds to the game in some way. there may be certain ones that are better than others, but you can work your build into a fun playstyle.

this game treats abilities as an after thought. right now ive got an engineer that pretty much just swings his hammer over and over. now it might sound like im nitpicking, but in other games there is usually a variety in combat. there is nothing new here at all. a bubble. flame hammer. electric aoe.

my other characters have similar problems, the abilties are flashy, unoriginal, and just plain boring. you will find yourself playing for hours on end, using the same boring moves over and over, and as you level up you don't unlock anything that really gives you that "now im a badass" feeling.

now this is all personal preferance, but i felt like making a review because i find this game to be so much more boring than any other dungeon crawler ive ever played.

get path of exile, it looks good, it's free, and most importantly IT"S FUN.

very dissapointed in this promising game.

I never played action rpg before this. I have 140+ hours in this game and I still wants to play with it. I bought for 3,74 Euro in Summer Sales, definitely worth it. Steam Workshop such a good idea for this game, you can finish the story in like 10-20 hours( depends on difficulty), but in the workshop I found a lot good mods, like bonus classes( you can play as Dark Alchemist or with the original 3 class from Torchlight 1), bonus maps, bonus weapons class and much more. I recommend the play SynergiesMOD, its a complete balance to the game.
I beat the Netherlord( Final boss) 5 five times, and the main story its repetative after completing 2 or 3 times. New Game+ is a good idea, but after New Game++++ the game wont be harder, everything stay at lvl 120.
The game could beat you, if you dont know which skill is good, which stats are important for you. This why you play in Multiplayer( up to 6 player) and this make some good comps. I lvl up to 100 1 character yet, an Outlander, but a Berserker in progress atm.
Every class has unique items/sets, and legendaries. After 140 hours of gameplay I got 3 legendary( all of them are the best in the class): shield, wand, and sword. My friend got 2 legendary in 80 hours: wand( same as mine) and a greathammer.
Conclusion: I rate 10/10, I realy loved it, but lots of people said its a Diablo copy. Yeah, thats true, but the game still awesome.
