- Kotaku

"Torchlight is a vibrant, fun, steampunky world, and exploring it is an absolutely addictive pleasure."

4.5/5 - Joystiq

"Not to be missed by anyone who considers themselves a fan of the proud tradition of action RPGs"

5/5 - Gamespy

"With most games of this caliber retail at $60, it might sound ludicrous that Torchlight 2 only costs $20 – because it is."

"Grab the game, grab some friends, and get to clicking."

9/10 - Destructoid

Steam Workshop

Torchlight 2 now fully supports Steam Workshop. A new launcher synchronizes any mods you have subscribed to, and lets you customize their activation state and loading priority. In addition, when playing Internet games in the lobby, you will be able to filter modded games by mod combination, and with a single button click, subscribe to those mods. Torchlight 2 will then restart, synchronize them, and activate them before returning you to the game.

When playing modded games, you can view your mod history, any previously played mods, and the impact disabling mods may have on your character.

We've tried to make the process as seamless as possible, with a focus on allowing modded multiplayer games with a minimum of fuss.

GUTS

GUTS is our in-house development tool, now fully integrated with Steam Workshop. You can publish directly to Steam Workshop when you compile your mod, making it available immediately for others to play.

We've also added a special tool to GUTS designed to convert pre-GUTS mods into the official mod format, with an eye toward making the transition much easier for our ambitious early modders.

You can learn more about using GUTS here.

New Content

This release also includes new game content!

  • The NetherRealm tileset - new NetherRealm dungeons can be found via portals throughout the world
  • New Monsters
  • New armor sets
  • New weapons
  • New pets - including the Headcrab!
  • New endgame map content
  • Some additional new dungeons in New Game plus modes in large overworld areas

About This Game

The award-winning action RPG is back, bigger and better than ever! Torchlight II takes you back into the quirky, fast-paced world of bloodthirsty monsters, bountiful treasures, and sinister secrets - and, once again, the fate of the world is in your hands!
Torchlight II captures all the flavor and excitement of the original game - while expanding the world and adding the features players wanted most, including online and LAN co-op multiplayer. Torchlight II is fast, fun, and filled to the brim with action and loot. Adventure solo or online with your friends!

Key Features:

  • Multiplayer - Play co-op with your friends via LAN or over the Internet for free. No subscriptions, no item sales. Our new matchmaking service lets you find friends, start new games, and join existing games. And, as always, you can play single-player offline as well.
  • Customizable Characters - Players will create and customize a character from one of four brand new classes. Each class can be played as either male or female, with customized cosmetic features and looks to make each individual character stand out. All new skills and loot give loads of opportunity for unique character builds.
  • Moddability - TorchED, the Torchlight II editor, will give players the ability to create their own mods, adding even more content to the world. Have your friends download the same mod and play together. TorchED will be available as a separate download very shortly after launch.
  • New User Interface - Torchlight II boasts a new and improved user interface, designed to be easier than ever for new players to pick up and play. This intuitive interface ensures you can focus on playing the game the way you want to.
  • Open World - We're not only in the town of Torchlight anymore! Explore vast overland areas and multiple hub towns, fight through rain, snow, day and night. Our level randomization ensures new layouts, paths, loot, and monsters every time you play.
  • New Game Plus - In New Game Plus, the game's not over until you say it is. Once you've beaten Torchlight II's primary campaign, you can start again with the same character for a significantly greater challenge. You'll keep all of the skills, gold, and gear you worked so hard for!
  • Pets & Fishing - These popular features make their return in Torchlight II in improved form. More choices, better effects, and your pet will still make the run to town to sell your loot so you don’t have to.

Torchlight games are amazingly good. They are, quite possibly, the best ARPG series of all time. The old school feel, atmosphere, great soundtrack, the pets, MODS... yep, very mod friendly! The only downside of this game? It's the last one they're making. This is what Diablo III could have and should have been... but what do you expect from the original creators of Diablo? They just get it. If you liked the first Diablo or are a fan of other ARPGs, you owe it to yourself... don't pass this up. Even at full price, this game is a steal.

I paid for this game when it was on a pre-purchase offer. I got two copies in fact, one for me and another for my son. They promised it would be released within a few months (I forget the exact month), but it took over a year and by then I'd lost interest. Even after all that waiting the game is not what I was expecting at all (my son doesn't like it either). It feels repetitive and nothing short of a click and grind experience. I've tried to stick with it, I've put in the hours, but I think all those broken promises and all that waiting killed it for me, and the gameplay is a constant reminder NEVER to buy from this developer again!

It's the younger, light-hearted version of Diablo 2, and everything I wanted (and didn't get) in Diablo 3.
Tons of loot, mindless hack-and-slash fun and some epic bosses make up for an amazing experience.
My only complaint is the extremely shaky multiplayer.

This game is very hard to keep playing, as it is repetive and at sometimes seems to lack meaning and a story, but I do recommend this game.

PROS:
Art and style
Balanced classes
Mod Support
Large Maps
Easy to pick up

CONS:
Gives you carpal tunnel
Very easy, even on Elite/Veteran
Repetitive
Lack of story
Requires you to log in EVERY TIME for multiplayer

Torchlight II vs Diablo review

Nope, you know what? We're not going to go about reviewing this game that way - not because they're not comparable or not in the same genre, but because it's like pitting apples vs oranges, or Star Trek vs Star Wars. Just because two games, shows, or fruits share a few features doesn't mean you can really place one over the other.

So, where to begin...

Torchlight II offers so, so much to fans of classic dungeon crawler ARPG's. It offers 4 dynamic classes with 3 skill trees which allow you to mix and match skills at will; attribute points for stats that are all useful to every character in their own way; secret rooms usually accessed through puzzles; epic boss battles; gigantic world chests that require a key that drops from a specific mob; portals to other dimensions filled with loot; both shared and personal stashes; and - last but not least - pets.

Pets are a really unique addition to Torchlight II that satisfy the loot hoarder in each of us. While out adventuring, your pet will carry all of your unwanted loot back to town. In addition to this, they will assist you in battle, cast spells, and go shopping for basic supplies. No feeding necessary!

Something else that's both unique and awesome about this game is its mod-friendly attitude. It offers a very helpful mod kit for any who are interested in expanding Torchlight II's horizons, and actively supports said mods with online play.

Speaking of online play, Torchlight II is an excellent game to play with your friends! Don't forget, if you guys are playing a modded version of the game you HAVE to not only be subscribed to the same mods but have the mods in the same load order as well.

Torchlight II is fantastic to play solo. Nearly all of my 200+ hours in this game have been spent alone, tearing through the wilderness of Torchlight. From level 1 to level 100, gameplay is fresh and challenging. Difficulty can be changed as needed between 4 difficulty settings, and hardcore characters are an option.

Before I end this review, I must add that the music is FANTASTIC. It is by far some of the best music I've heard from an ARPG's OST. Even if you decide not to purchase the game, definitely visit YouTube and give its music a listen - although, it is definitely better when experienced in the settings meant for it ;)

Torchlight has been revamped and upgraded in every aspect since its first debut.

Amongst the best ARPGs, Torchlight II is one of my favourite. It has moderate random generated landscapes, insanely customizable, 4 totally different characters, moddability (!) and tons...no, I mean TONS of loot.

In Steam Workshop, there are heaps of mods that improves/completely changes the game, giving you the ARPG you really want to play. I do not like to compare games or saying which one is better. Grim Dawn, Torchlight II, Diablo...: all of them are unique quality.

I enjoy the genre, having played Diablo, Diablo II, Diablo III, and the prior torchlight.

The game stays pretty true to the formula and is a good addition. However I will note that the storyline is a bit soft, which is unfortunate but still a solid purchase overall.

As of 2016 no game of this type has come close to Diablo 2 but Torchlight would be the best game of its genre. Why? because when you play torchlight, your enjoying it for what it is unlike all the other games that try so hard to be d2.

It is basically Diablo II perfected. I don't care for Diablo's dark themes and mature art, so I'm a fan of Torchlight's lighter approach too. You can't go wrong with this game. It is tried and true ARPG goodness. The multiplayer is solid too.
