Avoiding micromanagement is a good thing in my book, because I think strategy games are not about nimbleness with the mouse and keyboard, but about making the right choices under pressure.

However, this game was not what I expected, I was hoping for something a little bit more complex. This game plays like Eufloria, or more simplistically, Galcon Fusion.

I got this in a sale so I didn't feel like spending some more time to see if the game had anything new to offer that I hadn't seen yet.

It seems (from other reviews - either "recommended" or "not-recommended") that players really don't get the concept of the game. Let me get this clear.

If you happen to know the game called "State of war" you just know how "Oil rush" would be played. Sort of...

What is the difference between this and other RTS?

You don't build anything, you capture the pre-set buildings on the map. Enemy does the same. Buldings can be recaptured infinitely.
Every building (factory) you have under control produces specific unit (for that factory) once at the given time (ie. 1 scout unit every 10 seconds). More factories of the same type = higher maximum limit of specific unit + making of the unit on more places -> faster.
Factories can be defended by turrets.
Turrets are made from oil.
You get oil from oil wells which you have to capture just like factory. Oil well can be recaptured too and cannot be defended by turrets.

So far it looks almost like State of war. Here come the changes:

You can't control every single unit. You can control only groups of units - be it the same type of unit or multiple unit types. Group like this can be sent ONLY to platform (factory, oil well, ...) of yours/of your enemy/neutral one. You cannot move units around the map the way you are used to from "normal" RTS.
If sent on your platform: Units circle around and defend the platform. You prepare attack/invasion this way -> get more units on one place before launching attack.
If sent on enemy platform: Units try to kill enemy (units and turrets) and then start to recapture platform.
If sent on neutral: just like enemy (neutral units may be present that defend the platform)

There are some upgrades and special abilities and so on...

This is not ordinary RTS and many "players" don't get it. This game really reminds me of State od war which is probably totally forgotten these days. But it was just like this - something new.

I still have to go through the whole game and try multiplayer (and get PWNED), but I would recommend this game. You have to be prepared for it though. It is fast-paced, challenging, doesn't give you any rest when you play it.

And just like with other reviews from me - guess what? :-) It runs on Linux without any single problem.

Interesting gameplay & setting, great graphics: It's no standard rts but a real cool game! Good Linux support, also no problem with AMD Radeon here (7850, using proprietary drivers). Also very funny in multiplayer! :-)

An odd hybrid between RTS and Tower Defense. Past the first missions the difficulty spikes aggressively. The voice acting and the script are ludicrous, specially when it comes to pop culture references and the character of Zhuang, some sort of derp Confucius. Its graphics are very impressive, the omnipresent water is a delight to look at. All things considered, Oil Rush can be an enjoyable, if sometimes infuriating, experience.

Oil Rush delivers a new experience within the tower defense genre, which ends up delivering a decent experience. The flaws of Oil Rush are the lack of variety and freedom within the game. Despite these flaws, the game is a real brainteaser at times.

A mixture of RTS and tower defense, Oil Rush is a solid game in terms of its gameplay. The units are all unique, and by the end of the game, there is much in terms of variety. The story is forgettable, but the core of this game is in its gameplay, and that's where it shines. The RTS and tower defense styles blend perfectly and there is quite a bit in terms of level variety.

Oil Rush overall is a good strategy game, not perfect but is very enjoyable, the only thing I miss is not to be able to alt tab between the desktop and other apps when the game is running like most other games allow on the linux world.

tl;dr: This game is pretty, but WAY WAY too simple. I've seen mobile RTS with more and better strategy and gameplay.

First: I thinik this is a really good looking game and wanted to like it a lot.

But after trying a few missions: The gameplay is way too simple. You command your unites based on the proximity to each base. You select a base and send 25%, 50%, or 100% of the units to another base, making strategy nonexistant. If you send them to the wrong base you can't recall them, so you're screwed if you send your fleet to the wrong base. This game is literally about swarming the enemy the guy with the biggest fleet wins. The game auto creates units, which is just annoying since each building only builds 1 type of unit and is done automatically which further degrades the strategy. For example, say you want a fleet 25% of boat A, and 75% boat B you can't since they will be auto constructed and you can't stop the construction, you'll end up with something like 75% boat A and 25% boat B.

Gameplay-wise, Oil Rush is a strange mixture of a real-time strategy game that does not require micro management of units (the "attack part") and a tower defense game (the "defense part") that does not provide enough feedback on enemy movements and troops encountered to be effective. This results in a product consisting of two parts that don't intertwine well and that leave the impression of a lack of gameplay development focus.
