What the developers have to say:

“Battle Chess: Game of Kings is the return of the classic Battle Chess. We are bringing it back and into the modern day. Full 3-d, a better chess algorithm and more features for online play that we couldn't do with the original. Back then we were lucky to have 320x200, 16 colors and a 1200 baud modem at best.

We are currently in late alpha with a few more features to go and we want your feed back as we get them up and going and in yours hands. Chess itself is up and running and basic multiplayer (same screen and online)is too. Soon we will have ladders and ranking and skill based match making as well as skill challenges. As these come online we look forward to your feedback and help.

One thing for everyone to know. During Early Access Battle Chess: Game of Kings will be available at $9.99. When we go live with the full version the price will change to $19.99.”

Patch delayed... :(

Seems that converting from a right handed coordinate system to a left handed one is... fun... Loads of fun. Rather amusing seeing pieces face the wrong way and other nastiness. Trust me, you DON"T want what I've got right now. I expect a delay of a week before I get all of the rotation issues fixed.

Converting from DirectX to OpenGL is a level of hell. Don't worry, I'm feeling the burn.

Update coming November 21st

So sorry for the delays, we have been swamped with another project which sucked up our resources for a few months. We are going through the messages here and addressing all issues with BattleChess: Game of Kings.

On another note: a fan was calling our phone number and leaving messages, we wanted to reply, but since the fan didn't mention a return phone in the message and the caller ID was blocked, we couldn't respond. Please, leave a return number if you want a response.

About This Game

It took 2,000 years for someone to make chess better!

The most challenging game on earth comes to life in Battle Chess. An entire medieval world at war is reflected on the checkered field.

Everyone who's ever had a knight take a pawn has seen that capture as more than one piece replacing another on the board. In player's minds, the bold knight, resplendent in his armor of silver or ebon, sallies forth and slays the foul footsoldier. Combat, mortal combat, is the heart and soul of chess, but this aspect of it can only live in the mind's eye... until now!

Lots of computer chess games capture the basics of chess. Only Battle Chess brings chess to life by combining a magnificent chess logic system with colorful, humorous, and dramatic three-dimensional animations.

Battle Chess: Game of Kings

A new version of the classic animated chess game for Windows Vista, 7 and 8 is in development! Updated with all new animations and features, this is the ultimate version of Battle Chess.

  • Turn-based Multiplayer: Play against the computer with scalable difficulty or against live opponents via the internet.
  • Skill Challenge: Test your Chess skills by completing game play scenario challenges in a certain number of moves.
  • Battleground Training: Control your environment. Place pieces strategically on the chess board to test strategy.
  • Tutorials: Video tutorials explain the rules and basic strategies of chess with a little bit of humor.
  • Animations: Watch your army execute vivid capture moves as they take an opposing piece. Dozens of unique battles, idle and movement animations bring the battleground to life.
  • Achievements: Earn achievements and trophies.
  • Environments: Choose between 3 unique Battlegrounds.

Chances are if you enter "Battle Chess" into Google Images, you will find (among other things, of course) images of the original 1988 Battle Chess from Interplay. It was one of the first games to replace traditional chess pieces with animated characters for a more immersive Chess experience. Fast forward about 25 years and here we are. Battle Chess has returned (again) with a modernized look and a sense of humor that remains true to its groundbreaking ancestor. Currently, there are three Battle Grounds (boards) to choose from: Throne Room, Garden, and Dungeon. There are only two color sets to choose from: White vs Black and Blue vs Red. Start up a game in Single Player and play against the computer or go up against a friend either Online or Hot Seat. The Online forum is divided into rooms based on Skill Level, which makes it easier to pair up with a random player. A handful of game options allow you to tweak the interactive experience as you like.

As a fan of the original Battle Chess, I have to say that I am happy to see it again. BC was how I actually learned to play Chess, back in the day. I think most of us would agree that the best thing BC has going for it is the battle sequences. Some of the scenes that transpire as one piece overtakes another are sincerely hilarious (my personal favorite being the Knight vs Queen). The soundtrack is nothing to sneeze at, either. But today, BC has to contend with Chessmaster and a few other prominent titles to hold its place as a Chess favorite. That being said, I really hope to see more content in the near future. It shouldn't be hard to come up with more choices for piece colors and even a few more boards. What we have so far is great for the price, but more customization would greatly enhance the appeal of this game. It would also make it easier to forgive the fact that the original Rook monster was replaced with a big, ugly, fat guy! Just saying. But hey, this is old school. Really cool old school. I can dig it.

Sorry for late review, firstly my pet woodlouse died... then as i sorted that woodlouses will, i heard from a friend that a mongoose also died half way around the world....

Why is this a steer clear game?

- No communication from dev apart from excuses / lies
- Game is broken due to bugs and crashes constantly (has been for months with 0 progress)
- No explenation given
- No refund provided

Best thing to do, from now on is simply boycott Old Skuul games, they are an example of a horrific company that just wants your money... i would elaborate on this review but "Something came up" im not sure what but i will figure it out.

Maybe an update is due?
But until then, this chess game is painful to watch as it really struggles via a Haswell i7 4770 GTX 780 rig with the best of everything on it.
I will re-review the game after; as it has soooooo much potenital, and I know if it worked great, then I would love it.
Until then, `Battle Vs Chess` rather than this...

Unfortunately this was a complete waste of money. The game hasn't been finished and is showing no signs of ever being finished and relased -- have a quick look in the Forums and you will see all the complaints (along with 2 or 3 faithful fans that keep saying "STOP BEING IMPATIENT!") Well I'm tired of waiting (How long has it been? 6 months? 12? I cant even remember!) and I'm done checking the Hub every month to see if any announcements have come from the Dev. The Dev can't even be bothered to keep her paying customers informed on the state of the game? Not impressed. I'm done with this game. I recommend you do not buy it.

I bought this game in Early Access and after many months, it seems like a year now, the pc version is still in about the same state as when I purchased it. Shame on the one dev (Becky) team for even pretending to be working on this game. Game has been dead since day 1.

Pros. Game has changed little since its original release in 1988. Graphics are OK until the pieces start disappearing (turn solid black.)

Cons. Game hasn't improved much since its original release in 1988.

I'll be honest, take a chance only if you like single player and if you can buy it on sale for under $3, otherwise skip this game.

It seems like everytime you are about to beat the AI the game crashes. Computers version of a tableflip? Still reccomend the game though. just needs a lot of bug polishing, and every now and then the textures turn all black. other than that its a solid chess game thats a lot of fun to play

The original Battle Chess was one of the first experiences I ever had playing chess. I can't even begin to express how awesome this game is. Keep in mind, it is still in beta, this means it's gonna crash on you when you're about to win and you're gonna want to scream and break things. But remember, it will be finished and then it will be incredibly amazing. I can't wait for all the promised DLC that will be released in the future.

Computer opponent is not too strong - easy to checkmate. Animations are nice, although the game is a little too brutal (plus or minus - I don't know) You can disable this battle animations in options- this is good. A great feature is a free multiplayer. Game has few bugs yet, but I recommend the game because the game has no limit activation. To the authors of Battle Chess - I wish you... I hope that the final version your game will better than the Battle vs. Chess.

And do not buy Battle vs. chess (another - game) - because you are dissapointed that you will be able to install her only a few times - Battle vs. Chess has limit activation
so what that Battle vs. Chess has better options in the interface, better camera control, an interesting campaign, and more puzzles... but has stupid limit activation on steam!. That's why Battle Chess is much better from Battle vs. Chess. And Battle Chess is much cheaper from Battle vs. Chess

Developper Battle vs. Chess TopWare only "milked money" from uninformed customers about limit activation, and steam should be ashamed that they do not inform about this in the description.

Sorry for my English I'm not native speaker

Are they going to fix the crashes and characters turning black? This game would be so awesome if they fixed the characters turning black... so far I've played three games, crashed once (on a draw, king vs. king); but every single time I play the characters turn black (seems related to another piece of that type being taken). I played this back on DOS in the 80s and it was awesome; I would hate to see this tarnish the legacy in an unfinished state. Also would be great with mods and additional animations + character themes / styles.

I do not recommend this game in its current Early Access state as of 11/17/2014.

A) I will begin by addressing the achievement awarding system in this game, since I cannot find another reviewer who has. A lesser problem, perhaps, but still worth talking about, as the achievement system is very unusual to say the least. In-game, it'll keep displaying a screen reminding you every time you complete an achievement even after you have gotten it already. It gets annoying after a while. Also, unlike other Steam games, the achievements register in your Steam account only after you exit the entire game, even when you're playing it in online mode (as opposed to achievements you get while offline being credited only when you switch back online, all at once), so you'll be getting multiple achievements with the exact time stamp. E.g. If you beat Peasant, Farmer and Artisan difficulties in one session, their achievements will register in your Steam account, after you exit the software, with the exact same time and date as if you beat all three difficulty levels (three separate games) at exactly the same minute.

If there are ways to get the achievements to be credited/registered in your Steam account without closing the entire game, please do tell. EDIT (11/25/14): I found that it triggers achievements unlocked through single player into your Steam account if you switch to online multiplayer (for reasons unknown) after getting those achievements, without closing the entire software.

B) The game gliches out and crashes often, making it frustrating to finish a game unless you repeatedly click Save and Exit and resume the game (it does not have a save only function, so every time you save you have to exit the game as well). The game usually crashes soon after a piece turns completely back.

C) The second puzzle in the Hard section of Skill Challenge, "Dynamic Duo," is and should be impossible to solve. It says to checkmate the King in five moves, which is only possible if the computer makes a mistake on the second move (which it does for some reason if you set the PvC difficulty to Clergyman or below after clicking on "New Game" button, which makes absolutely no sense since the Skill Challenge is completely independent and separate). With the best play by the computer, there's no way you can checkmate the King in five moves. It is not customary for chess problems to expect the player to assume that the opposition in the puzzle might make an error (for those who don't know).

D) The computer moves extremely slow in Monarch difficulty relative to the rest of the levels, even on obvious recapture moves (I also tried the Fool's Mate just to see how long it would take the computer to play 2... Qh4 and checkmate me. Guess what, it took at least over a minute every single time. It is silly.) However, that doesn't mean that it's easy. Monarch difficulty is a big jump from Clergyman (the second highest difficulty level), compared to, say, from Farmer to Artisan or Nobleman to Clergyman, so there is a large imbalance in level design. It's much harder to beat. To defeat Monarch, you'll need to be a relatively strong chess player.

E) Besides adding a save function without having to exit the game simultaneously, I think a draw offer option in singler player would be nice, too, as most other chess programs have it.

Of course, these are not all of the problems that exist in the current Early Access version (as you can see by reading other reviews), but just the ones I felt the most important to address.

All that being said, I strongly believe that Battle Chess: Game of Kings has a lot of potential to become a very good game. I sincerely hope the developers will be able to fix all of these problems (and more) in the not-too-distant future.

The updates are so frequent that I have forgotten when the last one was. Game appears to be at a standstill with no update from the developer as to what is happening with it. There are many bugs that have not been addressed with no support for quite some time......has potential but not sure if it will even be finished.

*12/6/2014

Four months later...........my review still stands. Not a single update has occurred since my review of this Early Access full of broken promises. Twice the developer has said update coming (with dates) and nothing ever materializes. Then we get another delay from the dev......if the long awaited update was in the hands of beta testers, what's the holdup? The dev is running out of lies!
