This is one of my favorite Nancy Drew games that I can remember playing. It's terrifying and interesting and I loved it.

Plot: Super scary stuff happens around the hotel you're staying in. I am a big baby and actually screamed at a few points. There's also some complex family drama going on that needs to be sorted out. It's very well done like most Nancy Drew games are.

Minigames: Okay, I could make bento boxes for literally days. Years, maybe. Adorable animal-shaped sandwiches in a puzzle game. Yes please. And nonograms. I did not know nonograms existed but now I am obsessed. (There is also Sudoku and another number game that is horribly difficult and I didn't last very long.) At one point, you have to write your name with a calligraphy brush. Having taken a Japanese class, let me tell you, this is already hard as heck. Trying to do it with a mouse is even worse. Survive that minigame, though, and the rest is awesome.

Puzzles: There were a few puzzles I needed to google the answers for because the game set them up strangely. Like walk aruond the garden a hundred times and you never see a thing, but after you know about the puzzle, click in a verrrrry specific spot and suddenly you can find new stuff. Also plenty of codes to break, timed puzzles with death looming, etc.

Exploring/Snooping: You get to shoo people from their places and investigate! It's great. This one (similar to the Waverly Academy game) has a time mechanic where you must wake up in the middle of the night to snoop around while everyone is sleeping. You get to visit different areas of Japan, play pachinko, etc. This game gives you a lot of freedom to run around and do things, and I enjoyed that.

Characters: One thing I liked about this game from the others is that several of the characters completely shut you down when you are snooping. In some of them, they open up so easily "oh hey you completed a minor puzzle for me. Awesome. Let me tell you my entire life story." This one made you work for it. There's also a cute romantic subplot with two characters off-screen, and the handyman at the hotel is adorable and fun.

All around, this is one of the better Nancy Drew games. Definitely give it a play if you like the series. :)

I have played a LOT of Nancy Drew games and this one was by far the hardest one. I never use the walkthrough with any game. This one, I needed the walkthrough. I played on the Junior level so I can only imagine how impossible the Senior level is. The puzzles are so challenging. I had to watch a youtube video on how to do the bento boxes because the instructions were confusing. The other puzzles consist of Sudoku and nonograms. If you have never had to do a nonogram, look it up before you buy this game. You have to do a humongous one at the end. With that being said, if you think all of the Nancy Drew games are way too easy then this is definitely the game for you!

Despite having some problems running on mac at first, and an imo really disappointing ending, I enjoyed this game quite a lot. I've read the ND books as a kid but am new to the games.
Personally I consider some stuff that could've made my playthrough a little more comfortable missing - like a journal for a example, or at least a conversation log. It was quite hard to keep track of things without any sort of logging device, so I would recommend to keep a notepad nearby. It applies especially if you don't intend to inhale the whole game at once.
Thumbs up for puzzles, and silly at times, but still refreshingly good voice acting.

Personally, not my favourite game.
I am a big ND & Her Interactive fan but this game just didn't make me want to play it. I TRIED to play it 3 times and all of those times after like 30 minutes I'd get bored with it and just switch to a different game. This is something that I don't do with ND games. I like to play until I finish the story/game.

If you want the best from ND, then I'd suggest Secret of Shadow Ranch, Phantom of Venice, Treasure in the Royal Tower and Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake.
Secret of Shadow Ranch & Treasure in the Royal Tower are not on Steam yet (Get it together Steam!) but Phantom of Venice & Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake are available for PC (and not for Mac OS yet, unfortunately).

If you have a Mac OS then you're left with Shadow at the Water's Edge, Secrets Can Kill, Trail of the Twister, & Tomb of the Lost Queen. Out of all of those 4, the best is Tomb of the Lost Queen. (As of Feb 21, 2016)

I didn't realise until I had done all of Rentaro's puzzles that my game was gliched! I had to start over from the beginning, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the game, I am still in the process of finishing, I just couldn't continue past a certain point due to something that failed to happen in the beginning.

FOR MAC USERS: The code to fix this game is here: ThwEDgb5rfFw
Right click on the game in your library, click on "Properties", click on the "Beta" tab, then paste this code into the bar and hit enter. Then change the setting in the drop-down menu above it. This works with ALL Nancy Drew games that come up with the error you're getting.

Anyway, it's worth the extra steps, because this is by far my favorite game of the few I've played! I love Japan, so the cultural aspects the game shows off are really fun and appealing. The puzzles are hard, and there were a few times I thought the game was glitched out when really there was just something else I had to do, but overall I really enjoyed the ride. The characters are awesome, it's scary and exciting, and I ended up pulling an all-nighter because I couldn't leave any puzzle unsolved. If you're looking for a Drew game to introduce you to the saga, and like a challange, play this one.

Staying in a Japanese inn you find out its haunted meaning theres a mystery afoot, Nancy Drew takes the case! The music is very fitting with a Japanese poppy kind of sound. The game has TONS of stuff to do from puzzles to playing pachinko and making Bento. This game has ALOT of content, it can be as short or as long as you want. There are all kinds of puzzles like Nanograms, where you make a picture out of boxes, to Renograms, and Soduku. There are 10 of each of those puzzles, but fear not there is only a few soduku things that need solving, having never done soduku before, I thought it was fun but not impossible. Some of the puzzles made no sense, like one where your underwater and cut some ropes, the pattern for cutting them is just strange.

This game makes you feel more like your in Japan oddly than Go Go Nippon! With its pachinko parlors, and making bento, to the importance of phone charms this game has alot going on for any mystery solver.

There is a fix in this thread. I managed to get the game working. I will update this recomendation, once I have played through it.

**Warning for Mac users.**
There issue with this game and other Nancy Drew games through Steam theat give an error and deem the game useless for Mac. There are many forum threds that talk about the error "Application Load Error 5:0000065435", many of which state that they have been intouch with steam, but all that Steam support asked them to do was reinstall the game or delet some files in an attempt to get the game running.

There are also reports that this game works with an older Steam client, this is true, but unsuitable as you can only get the current version. Also as this is true, it would seem that all that is needed is a new Steam update so that the Nancy Drew games will run agaiin on Mac.

Nancy Drew games are fun little point-and-click puzzle games for those who can appreciate a good B-Movie. No, it's not great AAA quality but if you can snag one one a good sale and can laugh at its flaws, then it's a great time waster. That being said, this one is easily the scariest in the series so far and I really enjoyed it!

This was definatly one of my favorite Nancy Drew mystery games, though I didn't very much care for the puzzle in the basement of the inn. I believe there was too much room for error, I wasn't able to finish the puzzle for quite a while due to one square I had messed up on, which took quite a while to find. I had to keep restarting the puzzle which made me quite frustrated. But overall this was a very good game and I do recommend it to mystery lovers out there. Have fun!

I bought this game for the Mac and immediately wish I hadn't. I can't even boot the game. The error message received is well known, Google it. It's existed since last year and it doesn't appear that Steam or HerInteractive have any interest in responding to or fixing the problem. They won't refund you. Only buy if you boot camp (?) your Mac, othewise? STAY AWAY AND SPEND YOUR $7 ON SOMETHING WORTHY.

I've played most of the Drew games and this one was the scariest one I've played yet, nearly knocked me off of my seat! I loved the puzzles and I was happy that I did most of this game on my own with only a couple of hints needed. Interesting story and nice setting.
