Well I'm now 100% through the game and have been be mostly impressed with it's fantasy setting, story and characters which mark a huge improvement over the developers other game I'd played 'A New Beginning'.

I was initially attracted the title due to it's graphic similarity to 'Monkey Island 3' with it's bold graphics and mildly exaggerated cartoon visuals.. and it doesn't disappoint with care and attention to the animation and backgrounds. It does evoke some of the retro charm of an 80's cartoon made interactive.

The story is pretty bleak and the central character 'Sadwick' is certainly melancholic but seeing him rejoice through successes does balance this out. Sadwick does get into scrapes but the peril level is always very mild and never without hope.

I had trouble finding an age range for the game, as my 8 year old nephew was interested in playing it, but I consider it probably more suitable for 10+ but younger might enjoy it with help of an adult to figure out some of the clues. Also some of the dialogue based quests can be a tad boring, especially towards the end when the game gets extremely wordy.

Having just completed the game I will say it was a really wonderful adventure but the ending was far more serious and linier than I would have liked. I have revised my review slightly to say that kids under 10 will likely find the last act of the game more tedious and require help to puzzle out the situations.

Regarding the ending, which I won't spoil, it was really solemn (think The Neverending Story without the final Falcor moment.. if your kid couldn't handle that then it might be best to avoid this) and there is no after credits scene. The credits themselves are enlightening but also do nothing to lighten the melancholic final scene.

The Good:
*The story is simple and clear with an end goal you are always working towards.
*Intriguing cut scenes that add another layer of mystery to the plot.
*A mostly clear set of objectives to keep you moving forward through each area.
*Spacebar reveals all clickables without spoiling how they work.
*Clicking skips dialogue, handy on longwinded talking quests.
*Voice acting is great throughout (one line with messed up volume righ at the end)
*No wrong choices that require reloads.
*Spot (your sidekick) is both companion and tool that makes problem solving fun without inventory clutter.
*No bad language (♥♥♥♥sspot was mentioned once, actual spelling).
*No violence or blood, on-screen or off.
*A good range of puzzles and solutions stop it becoming a click-and-combine fest.
*Text & subtitles were easy to read and matched the voice work and I didn't spot any type-o's.
*Ending & Credits explains everything, even odd little things.

The Bad:
*Some loads between screens seem really slow (10secs).
*Occasional crucial action can be hard to identify, stalling progress.
*On 2 occasions a voice played that didn't match the on screen characters but might have been intentional.
*Some tasks are solved by tedious and verbose conversations, sometimes completed by pure luck.
*Some tasks seem like very disjointed combine actions.
*Sometimes clues are too easy and made even more obvious by the dialogue.
*The final act has some awkward to target clickables and tough multilayered puzzles.
*A hint button when really stuck (or clearer descriptions) might be nice, a very minor gripe.
*Had a few crashes to desktop but game auto-saves between screen changes.
*Some complain that the main characters whiny voice and melancholic personality was off putting.
*Ending is far too serious and final in tone.

Recommended for:
Classic point and click fans (Monkey Island 3 especially).
Fantasy fans with a leaning towards The Hobbit over Lord of the Rings.. and those who love The Neverending Story.
Anyone over age 10, an older helper is useful for tougher puzzles and to keep on progressing.

8/10. A fun point and click for fantasy fans who don't mind a brooding story line and a central character with low self-esteem who never the less achieves great things with a shape-changing sidekick.

This game had the potential to be a perfect 10/10 adventure for me, it really did, however the technical problems were significant: frequent crashes to desktop, stuck at startup or when pressing ESC to menu or stuck during cut-scenes. The puzzles are varied, some are really cool, some just OK and a few just completely illogical. The main character, Sadwick, has a nasal voice and whines frequently. Although I can see how this could be annoying, taking into account Daedalic's design choice, these fit the character they chose to portray. The plot takes a while to build momentum, starts slow but gets stronger after the second chapter. The game has charm though, with a unique whimsical and melancholic feel that kept me intrigued from beginning to end. The artwork is absolutely beautiful, gorgeous, lush...there aren't enough adjectives to praise it. It really is the highest point of the game. The soundtrack is good and helps set the right atmosphere. There are some very cool surprise moments that I did not see coming at all, and the ending is especially touching. Overall, a very beautiful 2D adventure, not without its faults, but captures well the nostalgia and innocence of childhood. Highly recommend to all my friend. 8.5/10

A fun adventure game that looks inspired by Hayao Miyazaki.

Pro's: Great storyline, beautiful graphics and point and click adventure Game.

Con's: Main voice acting is horrible and grates on the ear drums. Yet all the secondary characters had appropriate voice acting.

I'd give it a 7 but the faint echo's of Sadwicks horrible voice actor resounds phantasmically within my inner ear.

The artwork and music are great. I like the setting, but it takes a while to really get into the game. And, of course, Spot is just awesome.

The biggest gripe I have is that the puzzles are too far-fetched, and you often don't have the faintest clue about what you're supposed to be doing. I like adventures games to be challenging, but I like the puzzles to at least make some sense.
