About This Software

The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

To get started, just click the button above to install. The SFM includes all the base game assets from Team Fortress 2 along with assets from some of the first “Meet the Team” short films.

Similar to other 3D animation software and so very easy to learn. Great fun to animate characters from Valve's games - especially considering how well Valve rigs their character models for facial animation. And of course it's free because Valve is awesome.

I simply love this tool, it has some glitches and can crash sometimes, but it's still good, and it's kinda simple when you know what you're doing

Pose a character,s c r u b in time, pose again, transition through poses by adding the round preset, and done, you've made an animation, simple, right?

10/10
also i dunno why "S c r u b" got censored...wait...

Anything is possible with a bit of practice and patience. Valve has made an incredibly powerful tool that anyone can pick up and start learning right away. Obviously it's still considered a "Beta", so there are some bugs to watch out for. I've only experienced crashes while doing things I probably shouldn't have been doing, but otherwise it is very stable.

Try finding an animation suite that has all of the features the SFM does for free. Yeah, SFM is that awesome. You can't beat free!

While it may be a lot to take in at first, and tough to master, it is a powerful tool that the community has [thankfully] used to its full potential.

Animating is especially the most grueling part of this program, but it has high reward to it, as you can make HD videos. Of course, it needs to be re-itterated: You can't make a Valve-quality video overnight. It takes years to reach that skill level and months to finish the project. And in the defense of some that may not be used to this type of program, SFM is not what would be considered 100% user friendly.

It is like many powerful programs that carry this minor setback such as literally any adobe product. It takes a lot to learn the ins and outs of the program but once you do it, you can make amazing things.

And I will give this piece of advice to people who might be using this for posters: Pick up GIMP, Photoshop, or Paint Tool SAI, post-processing is recommended, even if you render posters in 1080p.
-------

Overall I would totally recommend this software to anyone willing to sit down and make something and keep their focus on that project. My only complaint so far is how hard it is to launch the program sometimes. It's a shame, because even my computer with 8GB of RAM chugs a bit while using this program. But perhaps that's a tiny sacrifice I got to make for the sake of making something great.

Source Filmmaker AKA SFM if a very good program to use to mess around or make very high quality videos. This can all be easily learned by tourtorial videos which have been produced via YouTube. It is fun and interesting to use the only problem I had was finding Ideas for backgrounds
