About This Software

The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

To get started, just click the button above to install. The SFM includes all the base game assets from Team Fortress 2 along with assets from some of the first “Meet the Team” short films.

So...SFM...Yea...Someone told me it wasn't as hard as people said it was, so I decided to download it.
In the beginning I raged, yelled, broke a few monitors and I may or may not have ♥♥♥♥♥ myself! But after getting some help with the software(and my newly discovered mental problems) it got bearable! Yea, I could finally tolerate it.
So hang on newbies!

Pros:
+ Even though it takes time, finishing something is always a blast!
+ Creating a porno in 3D is awesome(Don't tell my mom)
+ "Feeling" like you know what you're doing is amazing!
+ It's free!!! Even for the phishers.
+ The workshop(and the internet) Provides you with loads of downloadable content, such as horses, strap ons and of course horses equipped with strap ons.
+ There is loads of tutorials for all of you drunken ♥♥♥♥ers who can't teach yourself anything. Just in case you are wondering,Yes! I am refering to myself...Again.
+ Opening SFM removes me from all contact with the outside world, Yes that's a good thing.

Cons:
- It's complicated as ♥♥♥♥ for beginners! Like seriously, What the ♥♥♥♥ is a Graph Editor?
- Rendering grass takes years!
- I can't get my strap ons in blue. Fix it Valve!
- Everyone is and will always be better than me! And that Ferexes is why you're a ♥♥♥♥(Don't kill me senpai)

Overall I think Source Filmmaker is a great software for anyone who have at least 7 unbreakable monitors and the time to render 1.000 frames filled with grass...

An excellent, excellent software. Simplifies almost every part of the process. Animation is very easy, much easier than most other programs with the same function.

I managed to learn how to make a short animation sequence in less than 2 days! If I can, you can too. ;) It's seriously not hard at all.

Relatively easy to get the hang of, and there's plenty of tutorials out there if you need help. There's also a huge fan base on YouTube for Source Filmmaker videos to help keep you motivated. Even if you've never animated before in your life (like me) I highly recommend this. With enough effort and time, anyone can make a SFM video. It's also really versatile- you can readily add custom textures, models, maps, anything! Not to mention the SFM Steam Workshop that is full of great content. Cannot recommend this software enough. Give it a go!

It is insane how easy this program is to use! Although it might be hard in the start, you will find yourself animating and making epic posters in no time at all! Although I am not the best kinda of animater, somehow, SFM makes it possible to make my animations look good! If you are wanting a free animation tool, SFM (Source Filmmaker) is the program for you! Plus, there are always people here to help you when you are stuck on something. (Yes I am looking at you R234, Pte Jack, Vintage, and Emporer Faiz)

But in overal, you should deffinately give SFM a try, you wont regret it!

But a small note, SFM has is one of the buggiest programs I have ever used, but luckily, the workshop and guides on the community hub can help you for things like that.

I've been using this software for a while now and it's honestly fantastic.

Whether you're an Animation Pro or someone just wanting to make a poster of your TF2 loadout, there's a powerful tool here.

I'm mostly a 2D animator, but the SFM has taught me loads the can be applied to any animation project.

It gives you industry quality tools, models, and sets to try your hand at being the filmmaker for FREE.

If you're not afraid to tackle Source and study the tool and the craft of bringing characters to life, then you will love Source Filmmaker.

Everything crashes and things don't work when they should. We haven't had a bug fixing update in many months, and no one cares enough about the program to fix it themselves.

But it's got 'Beta' at the end so its ok.

10/10 would crash again.

Source Filmmaker -- oh, where to start with the flatter? Initially, I found this program absolutely complicated, confusing, and I was skeptical about using it. I would give up constantly, and say, "Man, I can't do this!" It was all a bundled mess- until I watched Valve's tutorials, fan tutorials, and inspiring videos made in the program itself. It took me months to figure out how to use the Graph editor. It looked complicated at first, but then, I learned about the bookmarking technique. I then learned the very basics of Source Filmmaker, yet I still continued to doubt myself. I wanted to quit. I wanted to say, "That's it; I'm done with this program." Then, I told myself, "No, I can't give up. Animating is such an accomplishment." I watched the SFM videos people made; and that's when I developed my animating style. I have spent nearly 500 hours in SFM, and for most of the time, I practiced, and practiced, and practiced, and I wouldn't stop until I was satisfied with what I animated. Ladies and gentlemen- don't EVER give up this program, because once you're adapted to this fun world of animation, you won't ever have to worry about failing in it. Give this program a go.

Has a ♥♥♥♥ userbase that creams themselves over Scouts, Medics, and broody emo garbage, while simultaneously being extremely overcomplicated to the point of ostracizing potential users.

Yet, I still subjected myself to 250 hours of posing pre-made models and calling the results my own creations because I thought it was an excuse for being an awful visual artist.

It wasn't.

10/10 would waste 250 hours learning how to pose other people's models in other people's maps to please drooling Scout fangirls on the internet again. If you're a talentless teenage TF2 fan who wants a temporary ego boost, you should, too.
