About This Software

The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

To get started, just click the button above to install. The SFM includes all the base game assets from Team Fortress 2 along with assets from some of the first “Meet the Team” short films.

The Source Film Maker Is Amazing for animating, but, its not simple enough for people to go on and make Movement in animation, I looked at 30 tutorials and still cant.

Takes a bit to learn but once you do it is great to use.

Has good workshop content.

Wish they would add stuff from the updates in games but that is what the workshop is for.

I've seen what SFM is capable of, and I'm hoping I can make something with it too!
I haven't figured everything out just yet, but I'll get it down eventually.

+ Any game in the current day can have it's assets ported in, so long as it's 3D
+ 2D characters that don't have initial 3D models have fans to recreate them
+ Meme recreator
+ Poster making
+ Thoughtless shorts
+ Long (as in over 5 minutes to even 30) cinematic films

It looks pretty intimidating at first, but after a few go's at it and understanding how it works, it's truly fun and easy to use.. The way you move the models around are somewhat annoying and can get a bit frustrating at times, so be sure to take your time. I personally use it as an art references for poses and have dabbled a bit into making a movie...So if you have the free time, then I'd suggest screwing around with this program learning how to use it.

This software, in my opinion, is even better than the big names such as Blender, Cinema 4D and even Maya.

You can basically only animate in this software. It can do FAR less than the other softwares, but this is the best software I've come across for animating. It makes it easy and intuitive.

The leading softwares try to cram every single possible ability into them. Modeling, rigging, etc. Not SFM. SFM lets you animate. I appreciate that because it's a focused software that gets the job better than any other competitor.
