About This Software

The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

To get started, just click the button above to install. The SFM includes all the base game assets from Team Fortress 2 along with assets from some of the first “Meet the Team” short films.

Excellent piece of Software anyone can teach themselves to work with.
Working as a IT Technician I have always had a fascination with computers and the different types of software's they run this one by far amazed me the most, It has all the elements an Adept or Professional Animator could need, obviously it has limitation as it is mainly created to be used alongside Valves Source engine games however the implementation of the community's work via the Workshop feature allows for some great models/backdrops/particles etc... to instantly be added to the engines directory.
For example on how simplistic it can be to learn, I started by watching the official Valve series on how to use the program which can last from around 1 hour~ and from there I re-watch and start small creating little scenes and poses to get me used to the binds and the software's capabilities looking back at the tutorial modules to help me out in parts I am possibly stuck on and from there once I felt functional and capable of working around the software's basic features I make a scene in my mind and try my best to implement that into the Filmmaker, I was astonished by how much I learned in the short space of around 2 weeks learning and revision to now even going on my own and adding to the design I had in mind to make it even better than I imagined.
Now it is a big piece of Software and you will have to make sure you computer is capable of running the load but in my case that is not a problem so I have had a great time using this piece of software and now it has even become apart of my general day to day use after work or on the weekends just to relax and have some fun.
I can not recommend this software more to anyone who has an interest in Filmmaking or Animation.

Ever since i encountered SFM, it honestly was difficult at first, obviously.
But once i started to get the hang of some of the basic mechanics, it got pretty simple, i just love the fact that i can make very detailed photos of my favorite characters and put them in certain poses that otherwise couldn't be utilized in-game. Anyway, great program to pass time and learn a couple things. Animation is a whole new step for me.
This is definitely worth a recommendation.

Source Filmmaker is by far one of my favorite applications to use. I get to express these ideas I have and get to make them come to life. I find this community good, but sadly killed off from the wrong content. (FNAF, I'm looking at you!) This community is amazing, and I think that is has the right potential but the wrong content. Games like FNAF (Yes, only FNAF) Have plagued this community and everything related to it. You can't find a decent video without finding FNAF! It was just a fad, like Pepe. (Here comes Dat Boi!) Sadly, you find videos of twerking robots and poorly animated animations. That is why we need to take a stand, and work together to repair the dark plague. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was SFM. #MakeSFMGreatAgain

+ Any game in the current day can have it's assets ported in, so long as it's 3D
+ 2D characters that don't have initial 3D models have fans to recreate them
+ Meme recreator
+ Poster making
+ Thoughtless shorts
+ Long (as in over 5 minutes to even 30) cinematic films

Need I say more?

It looks pretty intimidating at first, but after a few go's at it and understanding how it works, it's truly fun and easy to use.. The way you move the models around are somewhat annoying and can get a bit frustrating at times, so be sure to take your time. I personally use it as an art references for poses and have dabbled a bit into making a movie...So if you have the free time, then I'd suggest screwing around with this program learning how to use it.
