The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

To get started, just click the button above to install. The SFM includes all the base game assets from Team Fortress 2 along with assets from some of the first “Meet the Team” short films.

Source Filmmaker -- oh, where to start with the flatter? Initially, I found this program absolutely complicated, confusing, and I was skeptical about using it. I would give up constantly, and say, "Man, I can't do this!" It was all a bundled mess- until I watched Valve's tutorials, fan tutorials, and inspiring videos made in the program itself. It took me months to figure out how to use the Graph editor. It looked complicated at first, but then, I learned about the bookmarking technique. I then learned the very basics of Source Filmmaker, yet I still continued to doubt myself. I wanted to quit. I wanted to say, "That's it; I'm done with this program." Then, I told myself, "No, I can't give up. Animating is such an accomplishment." I watched the SFM videos people made; and that's when I developed my animating style. I have spent nearly 500 hours in SFM, and for most of the time, I practiced, and practiced, and practiced, and I wouldn't stop until I was satisfied with what I animated. Ladies and gentlemen- don't EVER give up this program, because once you're adapted to this fun world of animation, you won't ever have to worry about failing in it. Give this program a go.
