A Marble game with basic rolling, jumping, and a selection of 3 powerups, where you have to go to the goal, solving certain puzzles and perform stunts. The simplicity in the controls is not at all a problem here, but instead there's a sever lack of polish.

Controls work about 50/50 as you'd want to, the puzzles and stunts don't even work well at best, navigation is confusing, even demanding you to backtrack quite a lot, and the levels kind of repeat themselves.

I can't say that I've had a splendid time, but, then again, I haven't seen much Marble games on Steam, so it's still a rarity on the site.

...I'm not sure how to feel about this game, so I'm just going to say it's a marble game and you should probably try it if you're bored. And that it's actually a little frustrating by the time you beat the pyramid world.

For 4,99€ it's a great game (and i think i bought it for even less).

If you go for 'The Impossible' achievement it's quiet challenging and the soundtrack of Sky Ruins is just great.

It's funny, because the game is very linear, plasticy looking, and movement isn't all that great.

And still I've replayed the game about 3 or 4 times, and I've enjoyed every playthrough thoroughly. That being said, yeah, I recommend it.

It's not a great game. Everything is kinda mediocre, and there is a fair share of bugs, but it has its moments and I still had a lot of fun. I feel like I've been missing out all these years.

This is not a puzzle game, which is OK. The buttons add minimal depth; they just move or explode something to let you proceed. Thinking is limited to figuring out where to go, which can be frustrating but sometimes also fun.

Movement is also as simple as it gets. But it's all about the environments. There is a lot of variety and many interesting parts that require much attention to the execution.

I think this is the perfect game to practice the Steam Controller (mainly controlling camera).

The physics work well, and the puzzles are good. I have just a few gripes with the game:

1. Checkpoints aren't placed in spots where they absolutely should be placed. This leads to replaying easy areas that lead into trickier areas, sometimes over and over to the point of annoyance.

2. The camera has some wonkiness (which is actually poor level set up) and leads to situations where you can't see the ball. This is less of an issue than #1, but from time to time, it's still annoying.

3. You can easily screw up on loops by pressing in the wrong direction (which is actually the direction you start the loop on). In most games that change your direction while moving, the movement continues in the direction of momentum as long as you keep the movement button pressed in the same direction you started with, which is what they should have done here.

4. Level size is much larger than one would expect starting even from the first level. Smaller levels up front, longer levels as you progress should be how it goes.

Overall though, a decent game. I would prefer if this was more of an RPG, as the levels are long enough to support some kind of progression for the ball (more speed, better control, etc.).

This game is pretty good. It has unique levels and a cool art style that keeps makeing me want to play more. But my main gripe with this game is its terrible camera. Its so herkey jerkey when you are going fast you cant figure out where you are going.

Final score- 8/10

P.S- Has very cool music!

You simply progress through straightforward levels by contoling a ball that is only able to roll and jump. No gameplay diversity, no puzzles, no skills required, and in the end the game fastly start becoming boring. On the other hand I don't regret spending 25 cents and 30 mins because it reminded me an awesome Ballance game from my childhood.

This game honestly surprised me.

I got this game as a 66% off coupon on Steam, so I didn't think much of this game when I bought it, but I was quite surprised by how fun it was!

Let's move on to the pros.
-Fun and addictive
-The landscape's well thought out (For 2008)
-The physics weren't terrible
-Very enjoyable if you love a challenge
-Very challenging, especially on certain parts.

Cons:
-Extremely short
-The camera's not really the best
-Really bland custom levels and minigames
-Not really much to do after beating the game

I give this game a 7.5 out of 10 for taking a day's worth of my time. Thanks a lot!

Good game
+:
It's like the physics games with a ball in Mobile games, but with bigger levels and better graphics.
Interesting Levels and the music isn't bad or boring at all!

=:
it's not that puzzling, just figure out where to go and try not to fall. (at least the first 3 levels I encountered)

-:
It's tricky without a gamePad.
The camera goes many times inside the graphics instad of colliding with them and just rise up or down and you get to see the vast emptiness of the game. It's not appealing and also confusing sometimes during gamePlay.
It crashed one Time.
Sudden frame losses

Nice little game. The playthrough time is really short but for example to me it took ages to get The Impossible achievement. Too bad devs didn't make more maps but luckily there are plenty of community maps avaible. There are also some minor bugs which appear now and then like speed boosts sometimes work randomly and ball might get stuck and you are not able to jump but those happen so seldom that it didn't really bother me at least.

I do not recommend this game, because I do not experience enjoyment from pounding nails through my genitalia and assorted other extremities. This game would be fine if the controls were more responsive or adaptive, but the controls and camera are bound to the same sensitivity slider. Want a responsive game? Then you had best be ready for a camera so fast it will induce nausea! Reasonable camera? Then no ball responsiveness for you!

Aside from that, the camera is really the worst part of this game; It clips through walls and blocks your view, so you are constanly battling with the view angles while also trying to avoid falling off-course. Whee?

There is a REASON this game has a :vein: emoticon! If you enjoy the game of labyrinth and like wasting HOURS trying over and over again, then by all means ignore my review and proceed onward, intrepid self-flagellist! Better yet, go find yourself the Lament Configuration puzzle box and have yourself a grand time! New dimensions of pain await you!

Ohhh, suffering... Good, VERY good!

It's a noble goal to want to make a game that embodies the best of 'Marble Madness' or 'Monkey Ball'. However, 'Spectraball' fails to deliver on that promise.

Rough controls combined with a bland color pallet leads to uninteresting levels and numb gameplay.

The game was great for its short length. The physics were good, and the power break was really useful, even though it probably wasn't accurate in terms of real physics. The primary reason for not giving it a 5/5 was because some of the obsticles were irritating. For example, there was a TNT crate i had to jump onto get up somewhere. I don't know if it was the wall being too close or the crate being too weak, but i hand to use it 10-15 times before it finally got me high enough to proceed. Overall a good game you can beat in a day that has some nice minigames when you're done.

This game was off to a grueling start when I got myself stuck against a wall in the hub world within the first minute (and somehow got a "7 seconds of airtime" achievment while doing so). After restarting the level, all the doors locked themselves for no good reason, forcing me to restart yet again.

Things only went downhill from there. The level design itself was boring, unimaginitive, and generally extremely easy, consisting of platforms made of dated textures suspended in vast amounts of empty space. Almost every level ended in the exact same way (one giant jump ramp to the finish). Most of the challenge came through the glitchy air physics and camera. I frequently lost my jumping ability for no good reason. Even if you do manage to get past it all, there's surpisingly little content for a game with the subtitle "Extended Edition". I finished the game start to finish in about an hour and a half (and then threw it on while I slept a year later when trading cards came out).

In the end, this both looks and feels like a tech demo from the late 90's than a proper game. It seems to be trying to be another Marble Blast or Super Monkey Ball, but it falls short in almost every imaginable way. Just roll right on past this old clunker.

Spectraball is an impressive 3D version of the old 'Marble Madness' style of time based skill tester game. Guide your Spectraball through the maze as fast as you can trying to avoid the traps.

Controls are easy enough, but does take some practice to move & rotate camera together. I liked the level designs, each being very uniquely themed & scaling in complexity (although there are not many to choose from making it relatively short game). There are some challenging sections which need precise control of your ball, which I found myself dieing over & over. This wasn't overly frustrating as resetting is friendly.

I felt a sense of accomplishment when I figured the next step out sometimes as there are some areas you need to stop, look & discover what's next - its not always obvious or easy on later levels. So it may be relatively short, but the what you get in the content is good.

In 2012/13 the game got complete engine overhaul, now called the 'Extended Edition', including some additional content - now less buggy & it looks great! Awesome little game for the price! Not too many like it.

Found this video on the community hub that had some good gameplay in it if you want to see more (straight gameplay so may contain spoilers):

Awesome game!!! I would recommend this game to anyone who like challenges. It can be unforgiving at times but rewarding in return. I love the idea and concept of this game as I hope later on down the track there will be a DLC for more levels and other Mini Games for this, also maybe some extra mods for the ball other than the 3 that came with the game you have too unlock.
The game is challenging either way when using K/B & Mouse or XBOX 360 Controller, but can be played smoothly depending on what works for you.
Overall gameplay, graphics and music I am very content with what they have done. Shame the game has only 7 levels.
Graphics can be distracting and sometimes awkward when you have to move or view around to see where you have to go as objects sometimes block your vision.

Couple of minor glitches I had found while playing this game:
Random points through out the game the ball may either get stuck in corners or wedges.
Sometimes when jumping it doesnt always do it then and there. (Very rarely on odd occassions)
lvl 6 The TNT boxes sometimes get stuck and dont drop when needed too.
lvl 7 The last jump at the end you sometimes get stuck in free fall and forced to restart from the last checkpoint.

With only those minor glitches I have found, I still enjoyed playing this game and will enjoy playing it over again.

Took a spin with Spectraball and what can I say? It will make you cry until you laugh! Some levels seem impossible to pass until you round that next corner and have that ahah moment! The environments are typical allure featuring desert, winter. a few mountain locations and an outerspace challenge that does the platformer genre justice. This adventure with a rolling ball gets a spinning 6.5/10 from me :)

but there were some surprises here and there even though I expected a bit more. Level variety was lacking as far as exploration goes

Short Verdict: Another game I'd rate neutrally if I could. Some levels are very frustrating, but you could still have some fun for a short while. If you already have it, you might as well try it. If you don't, don't bother.

Overview: Spectraball is about rolling a ball through levels, managing speed, jumping around, taking physics into consideration and solving puzzles. Basically, it's a brainless platformer with a few puzzle elements.

Pros:
  • Beautiful landscapes
  • The overall experience provides some fun
  • Unlockable items and skins for your ball sphere

Cons:
  • Textures and graphics, when seen in detail (and not as a whole), leave much to be desired (but, to be fair, the game is from 2008)
  • Poorly positioned checkpoints make the game a bit more frustrating than it should be
  • The camera - oh, God, the camera! - sucks and it's one of the hardest aspects in the game
  • A bit on the short side
  • Controls sometimes feel a bit unnatural--at least when you're in the air, camera positioning affects the 3D movement, making some jumps harder than they should be
  • Puzzles seemed uninspired and are either too easy, or really frustrating because of either the camera or the controls
  • Extra minigames are boring and bland, not to mention the lack of BGM while you play them

Bought on: Steam Auction for 1400 gems. I feel slightly disappointed in myself for buying this game under these circumstances, but it wasn't a complete waste (it has trading cards, too). It's been as cheap as US$ 1.24 (R$ 3,56) on Steam Store.

Verdict: Spectraball is another game I'd rate neutrally if I could, but I can't really recommend anyone to buy this. Some levels are very frustrating, the lack of checkpoints, the camera and all that, but you could still have some fun for a short while. So if you already have it, you might as well try it. If you don't have it, don't bother.

Similar games: Other games where you roll a ball across levels while solving puzzles are InFlux, and Lost Marbles. While I haven't played any of those yet, the latter seems more promising to me.

+ Leaderboards
+ You can actually find some shortcuts which makes speed running the maps even more fun!
+ Simple controls and camera is not bouncing around
+ Interesting environments and unlockable marble skins
+ Minigame challenges

- Still some minor bugs
- So called puzzles didn't offer any challenge
- Too Short
- Not really worth 4,49€ imo

Spectraball is told to be a puzzle and platformer game. While the platformer part may be right, it is not a real puzzle game as thinking is not required. The so-called puzzles are way too linear and obvious to be a challenge and the only hard thing is beating your own timerecord, which shouldn't be the case for a puzzle game.
The graphics may have a rather good quality compared to other games of the genre, but there are a ton of useless and not good-looking shaders that make the game look even more unrealistic than it already is because of the platforms hanging free in the air (which is of course needed to qualify the game as a platformer, the devs may think) An example of the shaders that were put in the game without thinking can be seen in the screenshots: Every surface reflects the magic shine of the ball, may it be stone, dirt or snow.
The level-design is done very poorly and broken. The major problems include but are not limited to: Way too easy and boring parts, shadows hiding passages that don't seem to be meant as a secret passage (It would make no sense to hide it), and most importantly: About 50% of the obstacles are easy to overcome by just speeding towards them and then jumping all over the puzzle, skipping the complete part that would of course not have been a challenge otherwise.
The gameplay is way too short. I was able to complete the whole game in only 2 [Edit: 3] hours of gameplay. I did not try to be as fast as I can and instead tried to have fun with the whole world, but there are no extra parts or passages in it, only the straight obvious ways the player needs to take. I also played many levels multiple times because I got tired of this game when I first tried it and then decided to play it completely several months later.

I definetely do not recommend the game. Only 2 [Edit: 3] hours of gameplay are not worth the price and I did not enjoy any level of it and would not even have bought it if it was on sale for 20% of the full price if I knew that before.
I remember playing Ballance on my old computer, if anybody knows that. It is not as fast as Spectraball but sure has its similarities, being a true puzzling and platforming game. Why don't you have a look at that instead?

Came into this hoping for a Super Monkey Ball-like experience, but unfortunately I didn't find it (nor have I found it in any game outside of Super Monkey Ball 1 or 2). It plays out more like a platformer where your character is a ball than a real...I'm not sure what you'd call it, but a game that focuses on the the physics, abilities, and limitations of the ball. The physics model of the game is lacking, level design feels uninspired, and there are many frustration points with long jumps back to checkpoints. To top it all off it doesn't support controllers properly, only giving digital movement to the analog stick. Needless to say, that is the last nail in the coffin of a game in which your character is entirely round. Precision is important.

The game preview misleads you to think you are going to be zipping by at Sonic speeds. You will actually be mostly crawling through the levels at a slow Marble Madness pace. Control over the ball also feels very loose and is easy to fall off the ledge on simple turns and narrow paths. The loose control also makes necessary speed and jump markers easy to miss. Small sections of the level will need to be attempted many times before a successful run. Personally, I would have had much more patience for this in the 80's and early 90's, but now I find the frustration level too great for mediocre entertainment.

On a side note, my system specs crush this game's requirements but still causes a complete system crash within 15 minutes or so. This too adds to my frustration with the game.

Spectraball is a fun and challenging game that can get you playing for a while without knowing that the time has passed. It is very difficult on some levels, but overall is a very well put together game. The settings for the levels, as well as with the sounds, make it a very calming game. However, if you get stuck on a part of the track, it can be very frustrating xD.
