About This Game

Tribes: Ascend is the world’s fastest shooter - a high-adrenaline, online multiplayer FPS with jetpacks, skiing, vehicles, and multiple classes. The classic shooter franchise Tribes has been played by well over 1 million people. With Tribes: Ascend, the franchise is reborn – fast-paced, vertical, acrobatic combat combined with class-based teamwork and stunning sci-fi visuals.

Key Features:

  • Skiing: A slow soldier is a dead soldier. By holding down space bar you remove friction and build momentum to traverse large maps, hunt down targets, and escape enemy territory at intense speeds.
  • Jetpacks: Total freedom of movement and aerial, dog-fight like combat.
  • Class-Based Combat: Unlock up to nine distinct classes, each with unique weapon loadouts and abilities.
  • Player Progression: As you play a class you gain experience which is used to unlock class-specific skills and perks. You can also share the xp gained while playing a favorite class to progress other classes.
  • Escalating Intensity: In each match you earn credits for shooting down enemies or supporting your team’s objectives. Use these match credits to upgrade base defenses, access vehicles, or call-in tactical strikes. The longer you play, the more chaotic the match becomes.
  • Vehicles: Pilot the powerful Beowulf tank, the speedy two-person Grav Cycle or the versatile flying Shrike.
  • Beautiful, Massive Battlefields: Wage war in a variety of open environments including frozen wastelands, sprawling cities, and jagged mountains.
  • Don’t Fight Alone: Friend-list allows you to link up with others and establish supremacy online
  • Free To Play... but not pay to win: All items affecting game play can be earned by playing the game itself. Players can purchase optional Tribes Gold to unlock classes more quickly and/or skills more quickly. Players will also be able to purchase cosmetic skins with Tribes Gold.
  • Spectator Mode: Highly-detailed spectator mode allows you to zoom in on your favorite players, view player data, and switch between action hot spots on the fly.

A flame that burns twice as bright, burns half as long. Tribes Ascend unofficially died within a year of its release, in large thanks to a very toxic community, but more so thanks to a very dodgy developer. Some would say it was doomed from the start with the unrewarding unlock system, and its very liberal use of micro-transactions, but what really killed the game was the "we didn't break through to a big enough market in the first year, so let's make something else" attitude from the studio. Tribes was pushed aside, all future support and updates were cancelled, with only the bare support of some multiplayer-servers remaining to squeeze out any additional funds, and instead Hi-Rez focused all of their resources on the continued development and support of Smite - a MOBA game.

Personally, Tribes Ascend was the best shooter experience I'd ever had. It was fun, it was exciting, it was difficult, and pulling off a flag grab, and capture, was among the most rewarding things I'd ever done in a videogame. I spent some 300 hours in the game, in- and outside of Steam, and I shelled out quite a few bucks too - because it was a free to play game that was so good, I wanted the devs to know it.

But in the end, Tribes Ascend simply went too fast for the devs.

Maybe you've heard the tales, of how Hi-Rez has abondoned their golden child. Whilst yes this is true, fear not! The gaming community has more than enough leverage to bring them back to this game and these are the reasons why. Don't worry there's a TL;DR at the bottom

Tribes Ascend is as unique as it gets when it comes to FPS. In Tribes the maps are so huge and its ski feature allows you to go so fast and at times you can sometimes feel adrenaline pumping through your veins. Add in the weapons which are mostly splash related and the only way to survive is to be moving. Stand still and you will die- not only does this make it the fastest pace shooter, it also means there will be no campers (except snipers, duh). The tactics, strategies and innovative ideas that spring up as to how to defeat the other side gives the game a lot of depth and lot of shazbots. To list all the features, I'd be writing a PhD, so to make my life easier, there's this: http://www.hirezstudios.com/tribesascend/home
Just because the game appears dead doesn't mean it's not good already. Sure things will seem a little empty but if enough people read this and enough people get into it, I guarantee we can change things.

All the classes blend together to create a synergy close to perfection and they individually cover so vast an angle that every class is needed and you will always see every class at work in a game. You won't see an entire team of Juggernauts because they'd be easily beaten by a nimble Pathfinder. Every class has it's pros and it's cons, and when put in a team form one mechanised unit that will steamroll the enemy. But you can also be flexible in that you won't have to stick to one class the entire time, you can switch it up. Sneaking in isn't working? Why not go in spinfusor toting and blow everything up? You don't have to invest too much into any one class and personally I find some of the starting weapons are amazing once you warm up to them. Spend hours trying them out. And if you like it, tell your friends to sign up, get the world united to bring this back, eh?

And of course, there's the one quintessential aspect of the game I haven't explored a lot. The fact that it's free! This is a lifesaver for anyone-stingy or not and oh boy am I glad it's free. For such an amazing game, so unique and so complex I was dumbfounded at first when I found out it was free. There are those who say it's pay to win but don't take any of that nonsense. NONE of the weapons are "better" than the starting ones, they're all different and suit different people or different scenarios. For the one class you may prefer blowing people to kingdom come with the satisfaction of seeing the killing blow, having your enemies blasted out of existence with you a mile away or gunning them down while chasing them and see them try to escape. With the multitude of weapons and items available, Tribes offers you the chance to try them ALL out in the practice mode so you can set your sight on a new weapon and grind and shoot your way to the top with a goal in mind. And when you've gotten every weapon you possibly want, or every item there is available, you don't stop or run out of steam *badumtsi* because you're always trying to be the best and the adrenaline rush, the satisfaction of a Blue Plate, a headshot, a melee or anything is reward enough.

TL;DR Not a moment in the game will you be bored and hours will fly by so quickly. So if you've played this before, but have felt defeated by Hi-Rez, get back on your feet or if you're completely new, go headfirst in and have a little faith. Login and start. Get your friends to jump in too. The more people we get, the more of the gaming community there are, the great ther chance of getting Hi-Rez's attention and bring this thing back. So spread the word, bring people into it, tell the gaming community and the world- even tell that random stranger on the road to. This game didn't deserve to end so quickly, so let's give it another shot.

It has been killed by the developer.
However we could band together and try to convince HiRez to open source it and give it to the community.
That would be the only way the game could even have a chance to live.

The best example of how you shouldn't make a modern old-school FPS.

This game introduced me to the Tribes series, and during beta and the first months after release it has been one of the best FPS I've ever played.
But it was ruined and later abandoned by incompetent (or just greedy, I don't really know) developers who couldn't manage the early and sudden success of the game, and made it a horrible pay to win hitscan fest with no anticheat, adding more and more unbalanced, overpriced and overpowered content instead of fixing the blatant flaws the game had, thus turning away both veterans and new players (who faced a huge paywall or hundreds of hours of grinding just to play the game with adequate equipment).

After a few months, nostalgia led me to try Tribes 2, which is the clearest example of why Ascend failed (classes, loadouts, weapon balance etc), but I eventually stopped playing it because of high latency and very low population.

I quit playing Ascend like 2 years ago, but right now, with all these upcoming/released new arena fps, it came to my mind and I realised that I don't really care about a new Unreal Tournament or all these Quake clones (that I surely will play and enjoy!), I just want a new Tribes game DONE RIGHT:

- no free to play model
- classes, physics, map designs and weapons have to be studied and analysed to provide the most balanced and fair gameplay
- content must be limited in order to keep the game balanced

All these features were mostly overlooked by Ascend's developers.

I want to give this game a good score, I really do. Well, first Ill just go over the pros+cons
Pros
-Very fast and unique shooty shooty gun gun gameplay
-Balanced maps with most of them being symmetrical and even
-Interesting guns and other items
-Large variety of classes

Now the Cons

Cons
-Games pretty much dead. Little to no larger servers as of 28/12/2014
-Small amount of glitches
-Devs have basiclly stopped working on it

Now the cons might not seem that bad right? Well this game hasn't gotten an update in almost 2 years.
Oh yeah and the lack of mod support.

The game is great but the devs did abandon it. Im gonna recomend it because i think people should get a chance to play it before the servers are shut down. But thankfully they didnt give up on the Tribes series because Tribes Universe is in development as of right now. Hopefully they don't cancel it like past games they were making. I hear its gonna be like Planetside 2 in Tribes form.

As much as the game has been fun, the developers no longer support and likely don't provide tech support for it anymore. Gameplaywise, it is still good, it's just the lack of Hi-Rez caring for Tribes anymore as they moved onto that junk MOBA called Smite.

Great game. The developers cut development for it, leaving no mods or community add-ons.

Tribes used to be a great series, until Hi-Rez got a hold of it.
Sadly, Tribes:Ascend is only a mere shadow of it's predecessors.
While there's certainly some fun in the game, the lack of support for the last few years lets the game die slowly and painfully.
There are not many servers left and those that remain are mostly empty too.
It's a sad picture overall, for a game that had so much potential.

tl;dr: there's nothing like this game, but being a multiplayer game the lack of online players isn't really very positive for the overall gaming experience.

I don't care if they left the game, and dont update it more.... Im happy that you still can play it, and it is better to leave it, then if it wasn't made? It is a very funny FPS game with a LOT of speed and that favors people that are fast on the keybord, and upgrade your reaction. :-) But, i got a bug that i cant play it :-( but i have played it and it was fun as hell!

Tribes Ascend was an awesome game. I was playing it long before it made it's way onto steam but sadly Hi-Rez has decided to quit updating it in favor of Smite as I assume they figured they can make more money off that game instead. Although this game was free to play or as some say "Pay 2 Win" I'd have to disagree with the later part as the game required a good bit of fps skill to play and someone that just bought all the equipment could still be stomped on by a more skilled player.

But with the game long out of date and less than 150 players active I'll have to sadly say I would not recommend trying it out now as you would have missed the "glory days"

Tribes is a class based FPS shooter.
Jet packs, and fast paced action is what make this game a blast!

Awesome game, would Shazbot again!
