Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods and Kings is the first expansion pack for Civilization V - the critically acclaimed 2010 PC Game of the Year. This robust expansion covers the entire scope of time from founding your first Pantheon of the Gods and spreading religion across the world, to deploying your spies in enemy cities in order to steal information and technology.

As you move through the ages, you’ll interact with new types of city-states, engage in new city-state quests and global competitions, and master exciting new systems for land and naval combat. Civilization V: Gods and Kings will also include nine new civilizations, nine new wonders, three original scenarios, and dozens of new units, buildings, and techs that will offer even more ways for players to expand their empire and dominate the world.

Key Features:

  • Expanded Epic Game: The core game experience has been greatly expanded with the addition of new technologies (like Combined Arms), 27 new units (like the new 1-hex ranged unit Machine Gunner), 13 new buildings (like the Bomb Shelter), and 9 new Wonders (see below). Additionally, there are even more new units and buildings included in the three new Scenarios for modders to use.
  • New Civilizations: The expansion will deliver 9 new civilizations, such as Carthage, Netherlands, the Celts, and the Maya (it is 2012, after all), along with their unique traits, units and buildings. The expansion also includes 9 new leaders including William I, Prince of Orange, Boudicca and Pacal the Great.
  • Religion: A righteous people will seek out Faith to found a Pantheon of the Gods. As your Faith becomes stronger, you can cultivate Great Prophets who build on these simple beliefs to create a religion that you can customize and enhance as desired. Are you tolerant of other religions or is this the one true faith? Are you focused on Gold, Arts or Military? Beliefs can even unlock custom buildings that only people of your religion can construct. Great prophets, missionaries and inquisitors help you spread your beliefs to other lands and gain the alliances of City States, and like-minded civilizations.
  • Enhanced Diplomacy and Espionage: Establish embassies at foreign courts for closer ties (or clandestine operations). As the religions of the world start settling in, and the world moves into the Renaissance, you unlock your first spy (with more to come). Send them out to establish surveillance of foreign cities, steal advanced technologies from your strongest or wisest competitors, or interfere with city-state alliances. All of your actions can have a diplomatic impact if discovered, so always tread carefully.
  • City-States: Two new city-state types have been added (Mercantile and Religious) to bring all new advantages to the table. The city-state quest system has received a complete overhaul to decrease the importance of gold and add a whole range of new quests that further the narrative of the game, as well as make the diplomatic victory a more varied option. Ally with Marrakech to get access to their unique luxury resources! Vatican City and Jerusalem are holy cities that play key roles in the religious struggle.
  • World Domination: The fight for world domination is now more dynamic than ever before. The Gods and Kings expansion features a reworked combat system and AI that puts more emphasis on a balanced army composition. The new system allows your lines to stand longer than they could before, so you, as a player, can make smarter tactical decisions without worrying about a single unlucky roll of the dice.
  • Naval Combat: Your navy is now split into two different ship types, melee and ranged. This means that no coastal city should be considered safe, and can now fall to a surprise naval attack. Additionally, all embarked units now have Defensive Embarkation, and can stack with a naval unit for extra protection. Add to this the new Great Admiral, and the high seas have become a much more dangerous place.
  • New Wonders: There will be 9 new Wonders with all new effects including Neuschwanstein, the Great Mosque of Djenne, the Terracotta Army, the Great Firewall, and the Hubble Space Telescope.
  • Three new Scenarios:
    • Medieval: Grow your medieval kingdom into one of the great nations of Renaissance Europe, fending off outside invasions from Mongols and Ottoman Turks and fighting the religious wars of the Crusades and Reformation!
    • Fall of Rome: Play as either Eastern Rome or Western Rome trying to fend off the barbarians OR as one of the barbarians themselves.
    • Empires of the Smoky Skies: Build flying airships and huge tractor-like tanks from the unique tech tree of this Victorian science-fiction scenario, and use them to spread your empire across the pre-industrial world.

-Quick Review-
Civilization V: Gods and Kings is the first Expansion that Firaxis Games released for the Civilization 5 series in 2012. New features included Religions, 27 new units 13 new buildings and 9 new wonders, three new scenarios, and much more.

-Detailed breakdown review-
Story: The “story” within Civilization doesn't really change. By that I mean that you progress through the game learning technology and trying to set your civilization as the greatest by feats of might, be it conquest, science or culture.
Your experience and “story” will change depending on rogue elements, climate, difficulty, landscape, and how close you live to other nations.

Gameplay: It would take too long to cover each and every change made with the Gods and Kings Expansion, there have been new units, buildings and wonders added to the game. You can found a religion which will give your people a certain boost, there are more features to Diplomacy and Espionage, new city states, naval combat has been changed so there are two types of ships (they can't all bombard), and three new scenarios.

* Religion: Let me just say, it was very fun to spread the word of “Atratzuism”, or “Nerdism”. A running gag with my family is to name things after “Christmas Spirit” or “friendship” too. (it's SO much more funny when being implimented over plague inc, but I digress.)
On a more serious note, you can create, and name your own religion, and enhance it with certain perks, increased science, more food from coastal cities, etc.

* New stuff: Who doesn't like new stuff? I like new stuff!

* Espionage: You get your first spy when you reach the Renaissance, each era after that you get another spy. You can send these spy's to steal technology, scout out cities, defend your own cities, sway favor towards you with city states, and much more... but be careful that they don't get caught by enemy spy's or else things might get tense diplomatically.

* Not all ships can Bombard: in the vanilla game you can take nearly any 'ol ship and pew pew pew the land walkers, however with this expansion you need to build specialized sea vessels to bombard. (The good news is you don't need to deal with nonsense from those pesky barbarian pirates bombing your settlers from the high seas)

* New Scenarios: Not everyone speaks about the Scenarios, but these are specialized events in history that the player gets to experience from the “drivers seat”. While not one of the selling points of the game, definitely a nice change of pace from the standard gameplay.

Achievements: Civilization V: Gods and Kings has 52 new achievements, it's very difficult to prove an accurate analysis for these achievements because there are so many of them. Some Achievements are simple, let “win a game with this nation” or “find and kill an enemy spy”. While others are difficult because you need to accomplish a specific task playing as a specific nation against a specific other nation. (Example: special task X with unit Y against nation Z)
All in all, the civilization series boasts many achievements, some difficult to get, others just require playing many hours of the game to obtain.

Price: Civilization V: Gods and Kings is priced at $29.99. Please note that you must already have Civilization V before purchasing the standalone DLC upgrade. If you're new to the series and know you like strategy games, I suggest grabbing the Civilization V: Complete Edition for $49.99.

Conclusion: To be honest, I didn't play much of the vanilla core Civilization V, so the “changes” made to the game are what I was most used to playing. I felt like the game was extremely well made and when I play without the DLC I feel like something is just a little bit off.
To flip that perspective around, I would assume that the game feels a bit more confusing, a bit more detailed from someone coming from the vanilla game. I definitely encourage you to purchase the Gods and Kings DLC for this game, it was a very good investment on my part because I've spent so much time playing Civilization V.

The Gods and Kings expansion pack for Civilization V is kind of the lesser child compared to the other expansion pack, but only by a bit. It's still important if you want an experience to match Civ IV.


G&K's most important change is to the combat system. The base game used a 10 HP system that meant even an ancient archer could still do at least 10% damage to, say, a main battle tank. With the 100 HP combat system G&K introduces, you no longer have situations like you'd get in previous games in the series, with Bronze Age spearmen defeating stealth bombers. Naval combat is also changed - in vanilla, all naval units were ranged. G&K splits naval units into dedicated 'melee' and ranged units. For example, destroyers would be melee, and battleships are ranged.

This expansion also introduces the espionage and religion systems, aspects that were present in Civ IV and which would be further refined in Brave New World. Religion in V is more of a zero-sum game however: you need to accrue faith points, hope you get a religion as early as you can, and complain to your neighbor when he sends missionaries swarming all over your lands. Spies let you destroy democracy in city-states to serve your own ends, steal technology from your advanced neighbors so you don't have to do as much work yourself, and likewise guard from other civs' spies.


Ten new civilizations are included: rich Dutch, aggressively religious Celts, scientifically religious Maya, profitably backstabbing Carthage, weaksauce Byzantium, frothing-at-the-mouth Huns, diplomatically domineering Austria, turtle-like Ethiopia, agreeably militaristic Sweden, and the expansionist gamblers of Spain from their own separate DLC.

Eleven new wonders make their introduction here as well. Alhambra is a more cultured Brandenburg Gate, the CN Tower is pretty good for something you build lategame, the Great Firewall is good for China buffs and people who hate spies, the Great Mosque of Djenne is for religious civs who want to go all the way, the Hubble Space Telescope is for people who have already won a science victory, the Leaning Tower of Pisa poops Great People, Neuschwanstein makes your castles fit for kings, Petra makes a desert city fit for a god, and Terracotta Army is for warmongers who have exquisite timing and literally nobody else. The Grand Temple national wonder is for people who think all the other temple wonders aren't enough, and the National Intelligence Agency is useful if you can catch it - it's almost as hard to find as the real NSA.


The eleven new units, nine new buildings, seven new luxury resources and eight new technologies round out everything else to give the game the depth it needed. Some of these can and likely will comprise your clutch strats in a tight game. Four new natural wonders also make their debut here, at least three of which are pretty good. Last but not least, new Religious and Mercantile type city-states are pretty useful if you can befriend them, and the CS interface menu is now much more elegant than in vanilla.

G&K even introduces 3 scenarios: one set during the beginning of the Renaissance, one set during the fall of Rome, and an alternate history steampunk scenario with invented civs. The last one is interesting once, but unfortunately rather forgettable.


One thing I wish they didn't do was use the AI leaders' defeat scenes whenever you catch them trying to steal a technology with their spies. (The leader screens are a bit problematic to begin with, but I digress.) It's annoying and it cheapens the experience hearing them yell "I have been defeated!" every 20 turns whenever one of their spies die - they should have used the denounce motion scenes at least. It's a small price to pay for everything else, though.
