About This Game

Disciples II: Gallean's Return is a compilation edition that includes the base game, Disciples II: Dark Prophecy, plus the two standalone expansions Disciples II: Guardians of the Light and Disciples II: Servants of the Dark.

Disciples II: Guardians of the Light is a stand-alone expansion that lets you dive into the fantastical world of Disciples II as either the Empire or the Mountain Clans.

The Empire is decaying from within as self-proclaimed rulers struggle for control of the now vacant throne while a cruel Inquisition sweeps across the human lands, causing rebellion and misery. Meanwhile the Clans, recovering from their near-destruction, begin to reunite their tribes. They have received divine instructions and now seek to uncover an ancient ritual that will let them communicate with their god, Wotan.

Disciples II: Servants of the Dark is a stand-alone expansion that brings you into the never-ending quest for supremacy as either the Undead Hordes or the Legions of the Damned.

On the dark side, the Legions of the Damned enact a plan to spread Bethrezen’s plague across Nevendaar. They sense the threat brought about by the rebirth of the Elven god and will stop at nothing to steal this power for their own purposes. Perhaps most pivotal to the conflict, however, is Mortis and her army of Undead Hordes. After all, the rebirth of her husband Gallean was her doing. He had rejected her for what she had become, a twisted, heartless beast. Now she would teach her mate a lesson... one that would scar his people for eternity...

One of the best turn-based, strategy games out there. This game has been one of my all-time favorites since the first time I played it way back and I am just happy that I am once again playing it via steam.

One can never have enough of a great game!

Running Win 8.1, it works on a full-screen 1280x1024 resolution, Direct 3d enabled, set to run as an Admin with Win XP sp3 compatibility - reduced to 16bit color.

meh, If you're really familiar with classical Heroes of Might and III video game, and you have never played this game, I don't recommend it for you. It was maybe playable when it was released, but it didn't age well, like Heroes III.
The interface is confusing, graphics are lacking overall good design, and gameplay is not that great compared to Heroes franchise.

If you like collecting classical games, it is MAYBE worth it when it is on sale, otherwise it is not worth it, really.

If you wonder how would I rate this game from scale 0-10, I would give it maybe 3-4 from modern gaming perspective, and maybe max 6-6.5 from classical perspective, but I've never played before any game from Disciplies series (when they were probably somewhat popular), so I might be wrong.

TL;DR: If you like modern games, do not even consider buying this even on sale (unless you buy every game on Steam).

tl;dr if you like heroes of might and magic 3, you MUST have this piece.

People are saying, that Disciples is a Heroes of Might and Magic clone. I agree, but in my opinion, the clone is better than the original.
You have 4 factions (Undead, Human, Dwarves and Demons) having their own story, yet they sometimes cojoins the other factions story. A turn based strategy with heroes, basic units and cities.
The difference between HOMAM is why I like Disciples more:
- You can buy only basic units, you have to train them. Never again will the enemy capture your city on Sunday evening and buy out all your dragons.
- You can keep your hero and his level across all campagain and then, export him to play scenarios with. Quite a bonding.
- You do not capture landmarks, but instead, a nearby city consumes the land and changes it towards your faction. Or you can plant a rod, which will do the same.

TL;DR + and - at the end.
In short - amazingly good turn based strategy, that is still unbelievably good today, so many years later.
In long - I don't know what the story is all about. I don't really care. My enjoyment comes from the gameplay. I love interesting new innovative gameplay mechanics, that are well implemented in the game itself. So here we go. After playing Heroes of Might and Magic III (amazing game, check it out), i was thinking "This is the best, TBS can ever be". And then i discovered Disciples 2. Amazingly beautiful game, great depth in each race with the unit leveling, almost endless replayability with all the skill and items customization... The depth of this game don't come from adding more and more races and units and what not, like Heroes III does, just one new gameplay mechanic gets introduced, and the entire balance of everything shifts, because everything is interconnected. I was shocked, that i needed special character to capture territory, i need special skill to equip ancient artifacts, if i dig up an item from somewhere, i don't just know how to use it. This game borders with RPGs as well. I was playing and I noticed a grave. I clicked on it, and it told me who killed who on that place. Attention to detail. Today we will have huge particle explosion and nothing else. This game keeps record on who have you killed and where. I love this kind of stuff. So well done, so well implemented, all intertwine together to create this beautiful game. I can't believe no other game tried even, to create that kind of gameplay. 10 years old, still unmatched.

+ beautiful visuals
+ deep complex rewarding gameplay
+ I need to give another point to the gameplay. One plus is not enough.
+ works fine on Win 7
+ attention to detail beyond many today's games

- not scaling at all for high resolutions

Still the best alternative to Heroes of Might and Magic and Kings Bounty.

PS: If this game don't work properly on 64-bit win7 - just find .exe icon and set winXP sp2 compatibility mode

After trying countless methods to get this game work,I gave up.That was on the Windows 8 days. Now I have Windows 10 so I reinstalled it and still I had like 5 fps. However I found a guide:

First set configeditor.exe and discipl2.exe files in both catalogues Dark Prophecy/ and Rise of Elves/ to run as administrator. Then change both config files to use resolution1024x768 and thick "Use Direct3D", "Strech to full", "Compability mode". Unthick "Play intro when game starts".

I couldn't ♥♥♥♥in' believe it. It worked!!!!! I don't know if it will work for you,but give it a try.

Greatest strategy ever, amazing plot, sweet graphic. I have spent hour playing that game. The races are unique, every race has their own special units, that make your gamepley different everytime you play another race. The campaign is awesome. I have heard that there is problem running that game on Windows 7, though I have managed to start it.
Please try this:

1. In the Steam game library, right click the game
2. Select "Properties"
3. Select the "Local Files" tab
4. Click "Verify integrity of game cache"

This has been known to easily fix the "Failed to find steam" error. If the issue persists then it is recommended you try these steps:

1. Open the Start Menu, right click "Computer", and select "Properties".
2. From the column on the left of the new panel, select "Advanced System Settings".
3. From the new dialogue, press "Environment Variables..." (at the bottom of the "Advanced" panel, just above "OK", "Cancel", and "Apply").
4. In the top half of the newly opened dialogue (User variables) if there is:
a - no existing entry for PATH, use "New..." to add it (Variable Name: PATH, Variable Value: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam -- i.e. wherever you have Steam installed).
b - already an entry for PATH, use "Edit..." to add ;C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam (or wherever your Steam is installed) at the end of the existing value. (Note the semi-colon to separate the value that was already there from the new bit with the Steam path.)
5. Press "OK"
6. Log off and log on again. You should now be able to run the Steam titles without problems.
If you have further issues I suggest you contact Steam Support as there may be issues with your Steam Client.

After that the game will start, but it can be really slow ( about 1 FPS), try than setting at highest possible graphic settings and check box called 'User Direct3D'. It starts on fullscrean, but it is slightly smaller than your whole monitor, so it should allow you to run it and enjoy that great game!

Turn based strategy, with dark gothic climate, you can feel evil evrywhere, especially that good side (elves, imperium, dwarves) is loosing a lot in wars with demons and undead. Also the game has a good hero development alongside with artefacts and etc.
Music in Disciples is magnificent, check it in youtube ^^

Bought it and played it for 8 hours straight. Great stuff, similar to HOMM III. (Starting it in the 1024x768 resolution gets rid of the "Can't initialize" error. I had no other issues with the game and I can certainly say that it is not a broken version like some of the users said about it.) The only downside is that much like HOMM III, the gameplay is a huge timesink so prepare to notice a couple of hours flying by if you start playing it.

An old game. If you like turn based strategy games like Heroes series, try it out. It has darker atmosphere, a sense of hopelessness and not as colorful as Heroes 3.

If you have any problems, disable steam overlay and/or run it with win xp compatibility.

Great game. Very similar to HoMM3 but your parties consist of a more traditional hero setup as opposed to numbers of troops. Playing it on windows 8.1 I managed to get it to work perfectly. If you get "failed to initialize" set it to XP service pack 2 in compatibility and reduce the resolution in configuration. If you have lag then turn on D3D.

One of the best games ever and also the biggest inspirations for the games we make ourselves.

As for those who complain it doesn't work on win 7 64 bit, it takes a few steps to make it playable. And it works just fine after that.
