7 Wonders II is the sequel to 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. The game is consisting in building wonders by swapping tiles in order to make a chain of 3 or more and break the background stone. Well, it's usually called a match-3 game if you didn't know like me what was this weird category.

I know that I will sound lazy but as I've already written the description of the game on another website, well, I will copy it here. I wish I was more acquainted with english casual game words... But I'll insert some remarks in it that can be only done when reviewing a game.

The gameplay is consisting of swapping adjacent runes on a grid, making matches of three or more to remove them. By doing so, the remaining pieces are falling down, occupying the vacant space. The player has a limited time to reach his objective of breaking the background stone by doing matches.

My first match-3 game was Amazonia on iWin.com, which proposes free games to play online. It's not a demo, it's the full game that you can install without having to spend your money for it. Don't be happy so soon because if you're ads allergic, well, the counter-part for offering it free is ads from the sponsors. So, every two or three levels (or 5 minutes for example), you'll have for 20 seconds (sometimes less) an ads. Be reassured, almost all the time, game is paused.

Well, the problem with ads is that in Amazonia, in the second level, ads were crashing the game. In Diner Dash, the ads can appeared in the middle of a level without pausing the game, making me raging when you have Business Woman and Cellphone Addicts, the most precious customers in the game but also the less patients.

Amazonia didn't have a time limit and the matches were only replenishing a tube on which an artifact was placed. Once it has reached the top, you've beaten the level. So, as I couldn't play Amazonia, I turned to Jewel Quest and 7 Wonders II. And I was disoriented because of the time limit and the fact that I needed to turn the background gold by doing matches without bonuses. That's why 7 Wonders II appeared to me as a better game than Jewel Quest... by forgetting that the latter was released earlier than the former.

But what annoys me the most in 7 Wonders II is the time limit. How many times I was really close to beat the level and see... TIME'S UP? If you see suddenly that you don't have time to beat it, you're going into the mode "panic" and you can't see clearly your game. Fortunately, there is a bonus that can freeze time... if you find it for a more difficult level. Me, with my luck, I've always found it before playing an easy one...

In 7 Wonders II, the bricks resulting of this breaking are used for replenishing the bonus bar in order to use it. The bonus can be chosen on the bonuses menu by the player. These ones are appearing on the Wonder and can be reached with construction sets.

The bricks don't replenish immediately your bar, you have to wait that your little builders take them and bring them in the house. That can be anxious when you need the bonus for beating the level when your time's almost up...

Bonuses can be found on the Wonders: reach it and wait for the secret challenge for the map for collecting it. They can be useful: some destroy squares, even one is equipped for destroying the map square, some are used for making more points, etc.. My favorite one is the one that can destroy a entire column of tiles, very useful when you have to collect the big construction set that is one of the conditions for finishing the level.

The construction sets come from the matches: the more you do matches the more you're replenishing the construction set bar. With what you've collected, you can build the Wonder and find bonuses.

When you're doing a match of four runes, you have an iceball appearing, by swapping it, you'll destroy all the runes and background stone of the same line. The fire ball appears after a five-runes match, and destroys both a column and a row. The dice piece appears after using several ice and fire balls, and removes random tiles from the grid. It can very useful to use these balls or dice. You're making combos, meaning more points but also meaning that you can deblock a situation.

You have also a secret Wonder which is unlocked by collecting the 7 "big" map pieces. In each level, a special square can be seen. By matching runes of the same color on it, you can obtain a "little" map piece. When you obtain a certain number of it during the construction of your Wonder, you'll unlock secret challenges and obtain a "big" map piece. Once you have collect the big map piece, every time you'll destroy a colored square, you'll unlock a secret challenge that is only there for points. Some are very difficult, because your number of moves is limited and well, you have also a time limit. It's up to you to find the key for using wisely your moves and beat the challenge.

Also, you have a shuffle bar that is replenishing slowly. It can be useful when no moves are left or if you feel that you're going nowhere.

After this long explanation about the gameplay, well, I need to speak about the graphics and the soundtrack. It will be quick because it's not really the most important in the game.

Graphics and animations are really good. They're simple, colored and well, in a sort of false 3D. The background (behind the board) is the Wonder you're currently building and well, with the time passing, you can see it even at night. It's nice to see that the day/night cycle is included in it.

The little characters, despite being all the same (except for the old man, the architect probably, the woman that is walking from time to time or the muscular builders, only collecting the big construction set), are very amusing. Some of them aren't collecting bricks: they eat, they do some tricks, some are even sick, meaning that the "ambulance" will be out, etc..

The soundtrack is nice. Nothing really to say... except the music when you need to hurry up. That's very darker and stressing. Anyway, 7 Wonders II is not the game with sophisticated soundtrack like in Painkiller, Half-Life 2 or Will Rock.

The replay value can be high if you're addicted to the game. Lifetime can be long if you're loosing too often. But 7 Wonders isn't Jewel Quest, it doesn't bring you something new when you have finished the game a first time. The gameplay is repetitive for every level. Always doing the same: swapping, swapping and swapping.

In the end, 7 Wonders II is a very good game. Building Wonders like Stonehenge, the Taj Mahal, the Moai statues or the Great Wall is a good idea, an other way to propose a match-3 time. The bonuses are also very helpful and without it, I wouldn't have finished the game. The characters are cute, well, for me, it's cute. Perhaps that some of you will find them ridiculous... But the repetitive gameplay and the time which is running too fast can be frustrating for players. Despite its flaws, I'm recommending it for people wanting to try a good match-3 game.

NB: I've written this review in 2008 - my opinion didn't really change about the game, it's still very enjoyable.

if you like relaxing and casual puzzle games then this one is for you.

the graphics are kind of aged and you can't even select another screen resolution but it gets the job done. however scaling the game to your actual screen resolution may cause everything to look slightly blurred.

the game starts easy and relaxing but gets more challenging later on. usually there is a time limit for each level so you don't have all day to finish the job but as soon as you get a grip on the game that shouldn't be a big problem.
if you feel stuck just try another bonus ability and you should be able to make it through the game without breaking a sweat.

it takes about 7 hours to finish the game. i had to do it twice because i missed a piece of the map that makes you find the hidden chapter and sadly the game doesn't let you replay chapters. so that was a minor annoyance but it didn't keep me from having fun on the second run as well.
what can i say? i'm a perfectionist. no level gets left behind!

7 Wonders II is an old but nice Match-3 Game. The Resolution seems to be unchangeable however it still runs fine on Windows 10 and it was alot of fun to play. No Steam Achievements so no pressure just pure relaxing and enjoying the Game. The Animation is rather old but still very cute and funny to look at.

I can recommend this game to any Match-3 Fan and people that search for a game without steam achievements. If you do like steam achievements but search for a break of being pressured this game also will be for you!

Build the 7 wonders of the world with this great Bejeweled style game! It great for casual gamers and great for kids to play around with. You find 3 or more matches to progress through each level. Its great fun and really easy to understand. This is highly recommended for casual gamers.

7 Wonders II offers a match 3 game where you have to drop building blocks to the bottom of the field so that workers can collect them and build the 7 wonders of the world. The gameplay is simple and casual as it should be. There are extra bonuses during each game where if you can match 3 within a specific colored area then you can access bonus games. These bonus games are timed and also limit the number of moves you have. You have to figure out how to drop a star in the field to the bottom within those number of moves. All in all, the game is a normal match 3 game, but it doesn't stand out like Bejeweled or other well developed match 3 games. I wouldn't recommend this game because it gets lots in the large amounts of match 3 games that you can find out there with better delivery for better entertainment.

A very simple match-three puzzle game. The aim is to collect building blocks to aid your workers in completing "Wonders" of the World. There is next to no challenge involved in this game, as you have an silly amount of time on each stage to complete your task. Coupled together with the power-ups you collect as you progress further into the game, you find yourself creating the wonders quicker than ever.

I play this game on a regular basis as it is a casual, easy to pick-up and play game that you can spend hours on, trying to get an even higher score. This is also one of the handful of games which carry a demo on Steam, so you can pick that up and see if its your cup of tea.

Match-3 game with extra goals. Not as involved as later titles in the series, and if you're on a post-Vista and/or 64-bit system, you'll need a custom patch to play it. I still recommend it if that sort of casual time-killer is your thing.

It's a generic match 3 puzzle game with some extra goals tossed in. You have to break all the background pieces by matching blocks on them. This gets really tedious for the bottom row and corners, so much so that you pretty much HAVE to have a block destroying spell with you at all times. You also have to get a large, immovable block all the way down to the bottom of the screen. This is also annoying but not nearly as bad as getting all the background destroyed. You can unlock a secret world by matching a certain color in a certain spot, but you can only do this once per world. Therefore, it takes at least 3 playthroughs to maybe come close to getting it. It's pretty generic. Nothing special in graphics or music, and is in my opinion not worth $5. If you like match 3 puzzle games then for half off maybe. Otherwise this is an easy skip.

This is the second game I've played in this series. Really enjoyed them both. Took about 4.5 hours to complete this whole game, but being a puzzle game, it has high replay value. I liked this one more than the original game. It still has the same overall game mechanics but without the rotating of the board. The original was more challenging for sure.

There's not really much to say. It's a standard match 3 game like Bejeweled. There's the 7 Wonders theme, but no story. I still find this to game to be the most fun in this genre besides Bejeweled. After playing both the original and the sequel, I will continue to play other games in the series.

This is your typical Match 3 like Bejeweled. In each level, you match up 3 or more stones of the same color to reach your goal. There are also extra objectives on each level, like making a match with a certain color in a designated spot. There are different powers to get that you can charge up and use which make the game a little easier. Lots of secrets to unlock. As you progress, you get stones to help build a wonder.

The graphics are quite colorful. The music is non-offensive. No complaints about the controls.

Not a bad little match 3. These don't keep my interest for long, but this had enough going on for it that if I wanted to play something like that, I might as well pick it. Recommended if you like Match 3 puzzle games and are looking for more.

Grade: B-
