About This Game

A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry®, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushes the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels.
Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.
With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.
Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.

One of my my favorite shooters. The music fits with action like none. Action packed linear but full of choice for every checkpoint in your mission. You are to save a woman that ran into the jungle. Good luck, your going to need it!

This game was really a big let down for me. Back in the day in school I've heard of the great new shooter Far Cry. Everybody was so hyped about this.

I finally played it since I got it in a game collection. I immediately noticed some things that really bugged me. But the real bad things came later throughout the game.

First of all this game clearly sets the difficulty level high. So even on Normal difficulty I experienced quite skilled enemies with XRay vision and a not really clear priority list. You got to parties fighting each other and you, the Tridgen and the Mercenaries. They are in an all out war together, but once you just peek around the corner everything doesn't matter until you are dead, the teamed up on me every time, which made it really really hard to get past some choke points.

The next thing is the far sight, which was highly praised by the developers, seemed to be only for the landscape (which really is beatiful, good job there). The enemies were faded out over long distances, which didn't seem to bother them at all to snipe me down with an M4, while I HAD to zoom in with the sniper to just be able to see them. This thing alone cost me about 2 hours in whole.

Then came the glitches. Having two armies standing in a room, fighting each other, while staying back in order to thin them out worked like a charm. But once I entered some specific rooms the dead where still standing making it almost impossible to figure out the real survivors before getting shot. But this just adds to all the other things I encountered, like, invincible enemies to a certain trigger, recurring sounds once you step over the tirgger again, stuck sounds which sounds like someone just keeps shooting even so you got him already, strange rackdoll effects which block you view etc etc. the list goes on and on.

That wouldn't be much of a problem, since many game encounter those bugs, even so not many have almost all of them , but once you are dead you have to start from the last autosave which can be about 30 minutes in the past. I had to play for 2 hours to get past a certain point in the river chapter, since you have to take out about 40 guys with choppers, patrol boats and rocket launcher, without having the game savin even once.

The story itself is quite what you expect from a shooter this scale, but the cutscenes always cut out a second to early so you sometimes miss the last word.

Well after all this game is quite old, so maybe I judge to hard, but I definetily can not recommend this game to anyone who is no masochist.

Finished in 11 hours on normal, which could have been done in about 6 hours without the problems above...

This is sadly the only *true* Far Cry game (to me).

In this game, while you have a lot of free roam space, you slowly work yourself from one campaign story location to the next while fighting in a (loose) jungle. A proper feeling of being hidden between the bushes and creeping up on the enemy (which the modern FC games also have, but imho to a somehow significantly weaker degree).

No "YOU'RE LEAVING THE MISSION AREA!" crap, just gameplay.

No obvious gameplay-stretch collector's items spread all over the map.

No always same-y activities. *Of course* this game has a game loop where certain things repeat again and again, but repeating/similar on a much different fractal level (Think Mandelbrot fractal zoom.) than the same-y repetitive stuff of modern Far Cry games.

No long unskippable cut scenes.

Saving whenever you want (OMG!).

No questionably simulated civilians shooting in the air each and every time you complete a same-y activity involving them.

THIS Far Cry is like the good old campaign first person shooters, except with the open world jungle and beach and diving in the water feeling. (Boy, when I played this back then on a 2.5 meter projection, it was like a vacation, for real!)

Bring back the old school Far Cry already!

It's like the Dark Souls of FPS. Good luck beating this game for your first time on normal or higher difficulties.
At least it looks good too.
The things the mercenaries say alone is also why this game is one of the best older FPS out there.

"Suck it down"
"I got a bullet with your name on it"
"You're ♥♥♥ is grass"
"Gonna open a can of whoop-♥♥♥ on you"
"I'm gonna tear you a new one"

God why can't all FPS human enemies be like this?

Maybe this game is an acquired taste.
I haven't acquired it after 17 hours.

Far Cry is difficult for the wrong reasons, in my opinion. I played it on medium, with adaptive AI turned off (maybe that was my mistake).
Enemies will shoot accurately at you before you can even see them (at max render distance).
Enemies with rocket weapons will shoot your face from 6 feet away; they'll be fine, and you'll be at half health.
Enemies fighting each other will switch targets to you, even if you're just passing by.
As you progress through the game, ambushes become more and more frequent.

The control scheme is good, although driving is a little wonky.
The story is decent, but it's hard to enjoy when you fight the same set of enemies 7 times in a row.
Graphics are dated (obviously), but not distracting.

I wanted to like Far Cry - the feel of it worked really well. You're not some glorious hero, saving the world. You're a guy, killing lots of people on an island because you don't want them to kill you.
The guns, the vehicles, the enemies and sneaking around all felt right, strengthening the game's atmosphere.
I wanted to like Far Cry. It just seemed to hate me.

Basic Information
  • Title: Far Cry®
  • Genre: Action
  • Developer: Crytek Studios
  • Publisher: Ubisoft
  • Release Date: The 23rd of March, 2004

General Impression
Far Cry® is a pretty nice action-based game. The graphics are relatively nice, but for 2004, they are spectacular. The textures are not very special either, but for 2004, they are well-made. The atmosphere varies a lot, from enemy camps and military bases, forests, waters and mountains. There are health kits, weapons, ammunition, binoculars, and even other useful items along the atmosphere. Also, sometimes you will be able to drive jeeps, and in certain missions, small air boats. The audio is pretty nice, I like the sounds of the guns. It sounds realistic. The music is also ambient-type and nice. The voice acting is alright. The gameplay is relatively an open-world style, where you need to go to specific places, to either kill your enemies, put a bomb on a place, or simply reach the evacuation point, and even other types of objectives. There are many scenarios, which will take at least one hour to complete (each one of them). Be aware: this game is pretty hard. Even on the easiest difficulty. If you are a casual player, I do not recommend this game to you. The story is well-thought, everything has a chronological order and it’s pretty interesting. The user interface is well-optimized, with no bugs and a pretty nice design. For less resourceful people, this game might be harder. You need to figure out ways to get to the place of fighting and what to do. The controls are neat. The engines are alright, I haven’t met any bugs, crashes, screen freezes or frame drops. Hence I have found several minor bugs, they will not bother you at all. The mechanics are pretty sophisticated, everything moves pretty realistic. Also, when you kill your enemies, they fall pretty realistic. Overall, Far Cry® nice action-based game, with relatively nice graphics, a fantastic atmosphere, enjoyable audio and music, a good gameplay and pretty nice mechanics.

Positive Points
  • Relatively nice graphics and pretty well-designed textures
  • Pretty nice audio and nice music
  • Fun and challenging gameplay
  • Many missions throughout the scenarios available
  • 3 difficulties available (even on the easiest one, this game is pretty damn hard)
  • A pretty nice designed user interface
  • Open-World gameplay alike
  • Some pretty stable engines
  • Some pretty nice mechanics

Neutral Points
  • Steam achievements and trading cards would be some nice features
  • A note to casual players: You will rage a lot on this game

Negative Points
  • This is only a negative point for less resourceful gamers: Hence this game does have a waypoint system (a bar with the cardinal points), you will still have a pretty hard time finding the places/objectives
  • It has several minor bugs, but they are not very important

A decent game from more than a decade ago. But it may not be the game for you considering how long my con list is.

Pros:

1.) The environment is nice and it's fun to explore around.

2.) There's a good amount of weaponry, ranging from a Desert Eagle to a rare and powerful automatic shotgun, the Pancor Jackhammer. If you favor stealth, pick a silenced MP5 and remain hidden.

3.) There aren't that many vehicles but it's forgivable if you can drive something that fires rockets and wrecks entire campsites.

4.) The A.I. enemies are impressive to fight against. Some operate like a squad and they tend to "think" (or pick stealth) more before assaulting your position.

5.) In my opinion, Far Cry offers outstanding music. It builds up and increases tension which is appropriate when you're exposed to assailants.

6.) Graphics are nice, considering this game is over 10 years old.

However, there are problems that Far Cry has.

Cons:

1.) Multiplayer is dead! There should be an update that states this in the store page.

Link: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2092407

Don't waste your time in registering for any site to get multiplayer. It has died long ago.

2.) Despite what some people said, a good portion of the campaign is linear, most notably the "indoor" parts. Also, the game doesn't do a good job in providing players with a diverse amount of alternative pathways to take. It usually only gives 2 avaliable walkways to complete the same objective and I do not find that acceptable.

3.) There's some sort of A.I. bug in which the mercenaries can shoot at you accurately behind walls when you're in their bunkers.

EDIT: Stealth is also broken in this game. The human enemies can "see" you at certain points, even when they should not have. This prohibits the ability to sneak around them and often, you have to fight them head-on.

4.) While I do not mind, a good amount of the Far Cry community despises the introduction of the "Trigens". In a way, I do agree with them because after you encounter them, the game becomes too different.

5.) I was going to complain about the bland plot but the voice acting is far worse. The main character, Jack Carver, has a pretty bad voice actor and his lines are cliche'd.

6.) Some sections of the game are notoriously hard, though not impossible to beat, even on easy. It would be understandable if you die almost immediately by rushing recklessly on the hardest difficulty but on easy is just overkill. The last level was hard but the worst part for me was fighting Crowe, the leader of the mercs, on a sinking boat while facing a helicopter. You only have a couple of minutes of destroy the aerial vehicle (as you cannot use a firearm when swimming), there's no supplies, and Crowe has good accuracy and he inflicts massive damage with his M249.

7.) The worst thing Far Cry has is the "auto-save" and it lacks the ability for players to save manually whenever they want to. I heard that there is a console command as compensation but for those who don't know, they will have endless times of reloading an earlier save and you may even get stuck in a loop where you continuously perish.

Summary:

In all, I did enjoy the game after adjusting myself and giving it a 2nd try. However, $9.99 is too much as multiplayer and customization is dead so please get the game when it's at a discount if you're still interested. On the bright side, Far Cry does have more balls than its successors when it comes to difficulty.
