Drakensang is a third-person party-based RPG based on the pen & paper role-play rules of The Dark Eye. Drakensang is the first PC game for over 10 years to be based on Germany's most successful and popular role-play system.
Drakensang builds on the pen & paper rules as applied in version 4.0. The developers have optimized the rulebook specially for the PC realization in order to make the game more accessible. But the essential qualities and the depth of the original rules have not been compromised.

A great game showing off Germany's very inaccessible version of D&D (in german for all those international non-german speaking fans!) in a completely smooth game that obviously recieved a lot of love from the devs. This game plays so much better than Neverwinter Nights 2, so if you liked NWN2 you'll love this, a lot more, even though it doesn't have AS much character customization (in terms of appearence, there are still a lot of classes and beautiful character models to choose from) it makes up for it with a smooth crpg experience.

This was really a pretty good game, I enjoyed it for what it is - a very playable turn-based single player rpg. I'd say it ranks up there with Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, both of which were very decent games for their time, and I'd give it a couple of points higher than Dragon Age, if only because the difficulty is a bit higher. In fact it plays pretty much just like Dragon's Age, so if you liked that game you will probably like this one. The graphics are comparable (a couple years old, still looks nice on a new PC). Combat is fun, which is important for this kind of game. I consider it slightly more difficult than Dragon Age because some of fights can be quite difficult and actually require some planning.

It was just what I was looking for at the time... a break from online mmo's filled with snot-nosed brats and their temper tantrums. If you're sick of the annoyances of online games and looking to spend some time playing a little old school single player rpg, this is a good choice. Length was just about right, I'd say 40-50 hours playing in no big hurry.

By the way, I ran into not a single bug in the whole game. So another thumbs up for that!

Drakensang is very well made crpg with strong feeling and themes of more classical or old school rpg with some elements of more modern ones. The rules can be a bit hard and confusing due begin a port of tabletop rpg, but it well made transition. The only issue is sudden spikes in difficult, often you can simple waltz a dungeon and after find yourself struggling in the next quest or monster, some quest could be very tedious and very hard (in a bad way), but thanks the worst offender is optional quest.

Doesn't work in Windows 8 - "Tips" on the forum that are supposed to fix the problem doesn't work either. Why sell something that's literally unplayable on modern computers?

This game is dull. From the incessant fights against uninteresing enemies (wolves, rats, and bandits, mostly) to the boring and unimpressive spells, and the underwhelming combat moves, the game is dull.
The game's storytelling is also dull. The characters are fairly boring themselves. If you decide to play it, whatever you do, don't decide to ask a character's backstory. What you'll get is a tedious dialogue that reveals nothing about the game world and nothing interesting about the character.
If you're like me, and you're looking for a CRPG to pass the time, then I suppose this game will do. But the pace is slow and nothing about it has yet to enrapture me.
I'd reinstall Neverwinter Nights 2, but that would take me forever and NWN2 has its own issues (bugs, mostly). But at least NWN2 has some interesting abilities for your character. Not so here. I've looked online out of sheer frustration, and it seems the most interesting spell the game can give you is some kind of fireball.
Woo. A fireball. The game has nothing with more pizazz than that, I'm afraid.
Otherwise, the game will keep you busy. There's plenty of uninteresting sidequests, and the main quest seems pretty long. Unfortunately, busy doesn't mean entertained.
I really wish somebody would make some more CRPGs of the caliber of the first Neverwinter Nights (not the multiplayer one) and Dragon Age: Origins. But I guess making fun videogames is hard, so it's unlikely we'll see much of that.
Anyways, back to Drakensang:
The combat is turnbased and rather clunky. Casting spells seems to take several rounds, which is quite frustating considering that the duration of debuffs is about as long. So by the time you've cast your weeny cold ray on an enemy (assuming you haven't been interrupted, since the cold ray spell has an exceedingly short range in addition to a long casting time), the distracting shock spell you've cast upon your opponent will have run out. Your party members then have fifteen secodns to take advantage of your enemy's momentary weakness.
Expect lots of waiting around for your character to get his turn to strike.
There doesn't appear to be any significant player choice in the game, beyond turning down quests. So if you weren't allowed to wander aimlessly, this would effectively be a linear game.
So: don't buy. It's a waste of time and money. Unless you're like me and you're unemployed and you need something to kill the time that can run on your dated computer, fun be damned.

After playing Drakesang for 57 hours i can pretty much say that it reminded me of old-school RPG legends such a Baldur's Gate.
You play the game with a party of four characters and the Real Time with Pause system is the one used during battles. This system allows for more strategic battles and lets you organize your team and the skills to use.
The storyline is quite interesting but i felt that it could be presented in a better way. But what the main story may fail to deliver all the other things of the Drakesang universe you can find out make up for. The world has a history and it's really interesting to discover bits and pieces of it all over. Also there's really not any character progression regarding their personalities. At the end of your adventure you and your companions will be exactly the same persons as you were at the beginning.
The game is hard but that makes the battles really interesting and fun. You have to use diferrent skills, spells and items if you want to make it. What i really liked is the leveling system because it allows you to use your experience points in order to improve your skills whenever you want to. So if you feel like it you can wait until later to use them when you will be more certain about what type of characters you want to build.
Keeping in mind that the game was released in 2009 the graphics are pretty good. As for the soundtrack i can't say i really noticed it.
I strongly recommend Drakesang to all the old-school party based RPG lovers. I'm sure you will have a good time playing it.
