Even though GTA2 is sort of the black sheep of the franchise, it is easy to fall in love with its easier overhead driver/shooter mechanics and zanier atmosphere that manages to hide the issue of repetitive missions and tiresome platforming sections.

Long version:
Grand Theft Auto 2, while it retains many gameplay elements of GTA1, is still the odd one out when it comes to the franchise. For starters, it is the only game that isn’t tied to a real-world city or time frame: Anywhere City is a featureless metropolis, and the supposedly 2013 date doesn’t fit the 1950s car designs.

Just like in GTA1, the goal of the game is to earn enough money to advance to the next level, usually accomplished by accepting jobs from three rivalling gangs to raise the score multiplier. These jobs also earn respect, a new mechanic that forces the player into some love/hate micromanagement to access high-tier missions at the cost of making entire neighbourhoods hostile.
The missions themselves are quite varied in flavour text but not in objectives: you either chase down a target or try to get a specific vehicle to a specific spot. There is some emphasis on platforming, especially in the last district, but these sections are probably the worst in the entire game.

Gameplay also had some tweaks, and the result is a double-edged sword. Everything is easier now with the introduction of a player health bar and by increasing the sturdiness of every vehicle. And everything also feels more dragged out with a camera that essentially prevents going fast or missions where you are expected to take on entire armies on your own. The save feature and the ability to retry failed missions helps a lot, but in the end, GTA2 just feels more tiresome (yet more thought-out) than its predecessor did.

A complete improvement from its predecesor.

You must burp and fart your way through Anywhere City doing missions for 3 gangs per district. But every time you do this another gang will be angry at you and attack you on sight until you "balance" the situation.

Once you get enough money you can progress to the next district... OR you can do all the missions, fight the leaders of the 3 gangs and see how everything goes to ♥♥♥♥ at the end before you leave.

Look out for Elvis.

Possibly the first GTA I've ever played, this game might not look like much, but I have a charming feeling towards it.. Mutliplayer can be fun, but will eventually get boring.

8/10 - for it's legacy

Total Classic, this game may be old but it still one of my most favorited games of all time, If you want to kill some time I recommend trying this out, also I wouldn't buy this game as you can get it for free from the official Rockstar website... I have it steam becuase it was part of a GTA multi pack that I bought.

And remember, respect is everything.
So go to church every Sunday, treat your fellow man like brethern, never commit acts of violence or acts of heresy.
And always rig the ice cream truck with explosives.

A solid sequel in a time of games where they were not always so. More varied weapons, better graphics in a near-future style. Multiplayer was good too if you could get TCP/IP mode to work (including deathmatch and other modes, even including cops which is great fun!), and the missions were much more impressive then the originals. Well worth a play for free.

The best GTA from the series' two-dimensional days. A great variety of vehicles and weapons, with pretty good graphics for 1999. This game in particular had some of the most hilarious missions and gangs in the series.

Pretty much the same as the original. The main difference is the futuristic theme, and the ways you earn respect from gangs. Still an awesome game that you can play on anything. If you liked the first one, pick this one up next.

GTA2 was the first GTA game I played and I still like it even today because it is the most detailed 2D GTA game around.

There are 3 large maps to do all your missions and all your freeroam on.
It feels like an arcade game to play and it does have multiplayer but when I've played I've never seen anybody on it because its designed for local LAN play.

The best and last of the Top Down GTA series.
Do jobs for gangs, make other gangs hate you and get your way to the target score!
This is a must have for all GTA fans!
