Darkest Hour 6.0 Update

http://www.darkesthourgame.com/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojdq1M8WFfE

Four years.

It has been nearly four years since Darkest Hour has recieved an official update. Today, that changes.

Darklight Games is extremely proud to finally announce the release of Darkest Hour 6.0!

I would like to personally thank a couple of team members by who made this update possible.

Andrew Lett, our level designer, for his tireless efforts and enthusiasm, even when tasked with the monumental amount of work required to update and modernize over 30 levels by hand!

Matt Hands, of the programming team, for the staggering amount of bug fixes and enhancements made to the vehicle code, and of course for diligently (and exhaustively) documenting every commit!

Other special mentions include Peter Klinger, Piotr Lukasik, Torben Hensgens and Ian Campbell. Of course, we also thank our faithful testing team whose efforts have helped make this the most stable and bug free version of Darkest Hour since it's inception.

This is not our last hurrah. Darklight Games will continue to update and modernize the game on a significantly more regular basis. We will provide more information on this in the coming weeks, but for now, we can't wait to play with all of you!

Those interested can find the change log here: http://darkesthour.darklightgames.com/public-relations/change-logs/v6.0.0.pdf

Long live Darkest Hour!

Sincerely,
Colin Basnett

About This Game

Fight in the theatre of war that changed the world forever. Battle alongside your compatriots on some of the most inhospitable environments of the Eastern Front in Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45. Red Orchestra places you in the most realistic WWII first-person multi-player combat to date on the PC, allowing the player to fight through some of the most intense combat of the war. You can play as infantry, using a wide range of infantry weapons, or crew one of the many armored combat vehicles available in the game, from half-tracks to the most famous German and Soviet heavy tanks. Engage the enemy with everything in your arsenal, from your bayonet at close quarters up to the massive 122mm cannon on the Soviet IS-2. And if that isn't enough, find an officer and a radio to call in thunderous artillery strikes to shake the enemy loose.

  • Crew 16 fully realized vehicles with highly detailed exterior and interior models
  • Choose from 30 authentic infantry weapons
  • Full 50+ player online Multiplayer Support
  • Unique Setting - the only FPS to focus on the WWII Russian Front
  • Engage enemy tanks at 800 metres and more with the Simulation-level armored vehicle combat
  • Fight the full range of combined arms infantry and vehicle combat in detailed environments based on real-world data, from city-centre to deeply rural settings
  • Realistic bullet and projectile ballistics will make you duck for cover
  • Coordinate strategies with your team-mates via Voice Over IP
  • Authentic Immersive Sound FX and 3d Positional Sound System
  • 3D 'Iron Sights' and unique 3D scope system
  • True weapon deployment system including resting rifles on support
  • Historically accurate artillery system
  • Distance-based sound system dynamically creates the battle ambiance
  • Advanced player movement system featuring diving over obstacles and leaning
  • Custom 8 way animation system for highly realistic player animations

New for Summer '07

This update includes a new map, a new vehicle and some major graphical enhancements to the game and is available to owners of the game for free through Steam. The new map - Krivoi Rog - gives players the largest tank slugfest to date, with 16 square kilometers of terrain, 3000 meter viewable range and up to 50 players. This map also features the new vehicle - the German Panzer IV G, providing the German players with some additional fire-power for the mid-war period.

In addition to the new map and vehicle, an all-new adaptive bloom system has been added for the game's graphics, making the bloom crystal-clear even at low resolutions. For further eye-candy, Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering settings are now configurable in-game.

New for Spring '07

  • Ten new maps, the winning entries in Tripwire's Custom Map Competition. Tripwire worked with the developers of each of these maps to ensure the maps are optimized, polished, and gameplay balanced. Highlights in the new map-pack include:
  • "Smolensk Stalemate": the contest winning map features perfectly balanced to-and-fro infantry combat through ruined villages and trenches in August 1943.
"Leningrad": features close-quarters infantry fighting in the ruined streets of the city, above them in the bombed-out buildings and deep beneath them in the sewers, all with close-in armor support.
"Berezina": the After-Hourz team surpass themselves on this rural/village map, introducing not just a new vehicle (the Russian BT-7 light tank), but also the first functional anti-tank gun in the game. To cap it off, the BT-7 even carries tank-riders.
"Black Day July": one of the very best for tank combat fans, set in the rolling countryside around Prokhorovka as German and Russian armor clash en masse during the Battle of Kursk.
  • Increased player limits. A new level of intensity with 50+ player multiplayer battles (up from the previous limit of 32).
  • New community made content, including the Russian BT-7 light tank with infantry tank riders and the first player controllable anti-tank gun in the game.
  • New soundtrack: The "Orchestra" comes to the Ostfront - the game now features a complete in-game soundtrack from composer Matthew Burns.
  • Gameplay enhancements. The addition of several features requested by the clan/ladder/league community to enhance competitive play.

Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 is one of the finest WWII games of its era.
The graphics are reasonable for the time it was made in, the sound effects are good and the performance is best.
The weaponry is rather limited, but there is a community server with mods, great fun.
Despite that it still holds up to this day, the achievements are near impossible to acquire, considering not that many people still play the game, and on the same non-modded server with official maps. Other than that, great game, worth your money.

Honestly tripwire should have made Red Orchestra 2 just a better graphics version of this, but no they had to focus on specific battles and make new games instead of modifying RO2 when it came out, lazy. It would be great to once again have an Eastern front shooter with all the mods, variety and vehicles this game had. They had T-34s captured by Axis, they had foreign SS division mods, Axis weapon mods, Allies truck transport mods, bike mods, wide range of vehicles and had great mods for Western and African fronts. If I remember correctly the Western Front version and some moded Eastern front ones had Tiger II even. The new version has literally only 6 Eastern front vehicles like WTF

This game is pretty awesome. Takes time to learn but definitely damn fun! Very realistic and lots of strategies are needed! I wish their was a proper single player campaign but there is single player with bots.

I had played this since release, met alot of people, made alot of friends along the way on servers, even formed a clan with a close friend, and then a realism unit, been to tournaments, realism campaigns, many matches, training, and skirmishes, done alot of editing, even done my own maps, this is a very fun game when it was in its prime, and still is good if your new to it.

i would reccomend it, coordinating your efforts on a team is fun, and really adds to the experience.
As for the gameplay itself, it has a ton of maps to play on, even alot of custom maps, you can even download maps from here: http://www.red.orchestra.pl/archiwum/plug.php?e=maps&game=redorchestra
they have maps for RO, DH, MN, and CC - Carpathian Crosses.

The game is not limited to RO, the are total conversion mods for it, one being very popular and i think still updated is Darkest Hour, its based on the Western theater of the war, so you can expect USA, and British there.
MN is Mare Nostrum thats based on the Africa theater, adn Capathian Crosses is the Romanian front.

The gameplay overall is fairly realistic, its arcadish in some respects but for realism its first person, there is no crosshairs, the rifles are manual rebolt, and many other things. Alot of fun, I played this game to death and tbh idk I dont have over a 1,000 hrs as much as I played, dont matter, there are some active servers, you can play against the bots, even in practice mode, but server activity against other players vary on time of day so dont expect full servers or active servers 24/7 they are there.

I may have missed it's "prime time" but this game is still epic, some might call the multiplayer dead but no i would not call it that. I don't mind the "blurry/muddy" graphics and neither should you.

So if you like old school wwII game just buy it already!

You sick of those fancy Modern/Advanced warfare ♥♥♥♥?
Buy a Red Orchestra!!!
Realistic combat mechanics :
Your speed depends on Type of weapon you are using AND on number of magazines you are carring. Yup you heard right in this game ammo is counted is Mags that puts you into dilema :
You just killed a guy and you mag is halfway empty. Reload and have no more spare Mags but be on safe-side in terms of running outta ammo in middle of firefight, or pray for the best and dont mind reloading. That will be your main though ingame. Hud is minimalistic, you see only Mags left, no ammo counter. Community in this game is really good but prepare to get rekt over 9000 Times before you master movement, and tactics in this game. Overall game is for People who like slow but tactics paced combat and Realistic game mechanics. Oh and game is likely to dont open again after closing it, but that just requires deleting one file in game folder, even game launcher in case of that error will tell you to do so, as far as i know that problem is Windows 8/8.1/10 only.
Overall: 9/10

If you like World War 2 first person shooter PVP simulations, this is a good game to get. This game is more on the realistic side of WW2 combat, but using location capture and ticket loss. Although the graphics are outdated, still a good game. The problem is the player community is low, and not many servers active now. It is popular in Europe still.

You will be using authenically modeled weapons with iron sights. There are no crosshairs, hard to tell friend from foe and has friendly fire. Has a compass, ammo and body status on UI, has fatigue that limits movement , and has no healing. Some infantry classes are Limited in number, while plenty of soldiers with bolt action rifles available. Has artillery strikes called in by a radio located at major bases.

You can drive a tank solo by jumping between crew stations. But if driving a tank with AI bots onboard, the bots get in the way, when in tanks. Tanks are modeled as close to real thing. There are more tank models available to drive on some maps. If you are playing with bots on server, they are stupid. Cannot order the bots around either.

Also download the Darkest Hour, Mare Nostrum, Real Panzer mods to this game for more Red Orchestra goodness. The modding community has made more maps for this game.

Does have Steam Achievements but you can only do them on a Stats Enabled server with more than 15 player. Has badge trading cards.

Needs more people playing and more servers hosted.

It was the best shooter about the second World War, the gameplay is very realistic, but at the same time takes some "casual" approach to make the game fast-paced and more enjoyable. Great graphics, sounds, well done guns and great gameplay. Unfortunately, the multiplayer is dead nowadays, as almost everyone moved to RO2, which is a great game too, but became slightly more casual and hence less fun. I do not recommend RO, although I vote "positive", because while it's a great game, almost no one plays it anymore.

The other reviews are right, the multiplayer is dead, I thought maybe there'd be a group of faithful players I could get in with but, alas there is none. I've only found bots on servers so far , no real people. I didnt play this game in its hayday so I really cant give you a accurate decription but I still see traces of its fading glory. I will say its incredibly lonely/ depressing to join a server with only a few bots on it. The game was ment to have 64 players on each made and now theres only 20 bots bumbling around and driving their tanks into random spots. I cant find it in my heart to give this old war dog a bad review.
"WW2 games dont die, they just fade away"- General MacArthur.
The graphics arent amazing, there just okay but your proably not playing a red orchestra for that reason.
I havent delved too deep into the game as of yet but the mods look promising
I'd recomend this if your a WW2 History buff or want to see what the seris was originaly like.
Its not a bad game.

Edit: As for the Mods....
Mare Nostrum is very cool has alot of good maps but is completely dead, only 1 server up and there hasnt been anyone on it when ever I check.
Darkest Hour--- Has alot of promise still in it. The 29th infantry's server is almost always active, so you can join a good game there. It has more features than the regular game or Mare Nostrum as well. Its alot of fun and very immersive IF you can find a good game. Would recommend.

Overall I'm not sure if I'd recomend getting this game, its mostly dead. Darkest Hour is alot of fun and theres still a group of faithfuls playing it. Its up to you, if you like WW2 and tough war games get it on sale but know there isnt enough servers for you to join at anytime into a good game, its in a constant state of flux.

What makes this game for me ..........

when you hear the crack and thump of a rifle bullet whizzing past as you run across open ground.

Diving into tall grass as a rifleman and crawling towards a enemy machine gun with the constant fear of him locating you.

The unmistakable whine of a enemy tanks turret traversing as you rush up behind it.

The team work as you and another player fire and move towards a enemy trench.

The feeling you get when you hit an enemy with iron sights from a great distance with a bolt action rifle.

Overall an amazing Game definatley recommend it!!!!!

Learn from your mistakes and work with your team or you'll be spending all your time running to the front lines just to get sniped.
There is a learning curve but you'll have fun once you figure out how it all works. Game is a realistic-type shooter so keep that in mind.

I only recommend this because you get to play as a Soviet soldier shooting fascists.
I don't care for Rising storm, bleeding mechanics are more of an annoyance than anything. Great immersion for defending the Comintern.
