What the developers have to say:

Hello Survivor, and welcome to the Project Zomboid Early Access launch!

We’re a game that’s in heavy active development, so when we were considering our appearance on Steam Early Access we thought it vital that we provide potential buyers with as much information as possible about the current state of our game.

Sometimes with alpha funded games people don’t know what they’re jumping into until they’ve bought the game, and annoying compatibility issues can spring from the woodwork after download.

To do our best to avoid this we’re launching with a playable demo you can try out first – in which a pre-made character’s fate is already sealed by a zombie bite. It’s our way of making sure that you’ll be satisfied with your purchase, and so you can be sure that a game in alpha (that’s due some extra optimization work in future) runs at an acceptable lick on your machine if it’s of a lower spec.

Please make sure to check out some of our regular YouTubers’ guides and opinions on the game. (We specifically asked this lot to cover both the pros and cons of our game and its development, but it goes without saying that they already enjoy playing it!)

Finally, we’re on Twitter (@theindiestone) and our website and forums can be found at www.projectzomboid.com. Here you’ll find the development updates that we blog every Monday in our ‘Mondoid’ updates.

If, after all this, you’re up for jumping into Project Zomboid, then thanks for the support – and good luck in your gruelling battle against an inevitable death!”

About the Game

Project Zomboid is an open-ended zombie-infested sandbox. It asks one simple question – how will you die?

In the towns of Muldraugh and West Point, survivors must loot houses, build defences and do their utmost to delay their inevitable death day by day. No help is coming – your continued survival relies on your own cunning, luck and ability to evade a relentless horde.

Mathas 'Early Look At Project Zomboid': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42btaipNYhU

Current features:

  • Sandbox zombie survival game.
  • Full line of sight system and real-time lighting, sound and visibility mechanics. Hide in the shadows, keep quiet and keep the lights off at night, or at least hang sheets over the windows.
  • Vast and growing map (loosely based on a real world location) for you to explore, loot and set up your fortress. Check out Blindcoder’s map project: http://pzmap.crash-override.net/
  • Use tools and items to craft weapons, barricade and cook. You can even build zombie proof forts by chopping trees, sawing wood and scavenging supplies.
  • Deal with depression, boredom, hunger, thirst and illness while trying to survive.
  • Day turns to night. The electricity falters. Hordes migrate. Winter draws in. Society is in freefall.
  • Farming, trapping, fishing, carpentry, character customization, skills and perks that develop based on what you do in-game.
  • Hundreds of zombies with swarm mechanics and in-depth visual and hearing systems.
  • Proper zombies that don’t run. (Unless you tell them to in the sandbox menu).
  • A ton of amazing atmospheric music tracks by the prodigy that is Zach Beever.
  • Instant action ‘Last Stand’ mode, on top of our Sandbox and Survival
  • Full, open and powerful Lua modding support.
  • Online multiplayer survival with persistent player run servers.

We’re a small team at the moment, but we’re also committed to providing the following:

    Planned Features:

  • The return of our PZ Stories mode that also serves as first ever tutorial actively trying to kill you at every turn. Kate and Baldspot return!
  • In-depth and varied NPC encounters driven in a persistent world, powered by a metagame system that turns each play-through into your very own zombie survival movie with emergent narrative gameplay.
  • Engine upgrade to make the most of your graphics card as well as your processor
  • Constant expansion of the countryside and cities around Muldraugh and West Point
  • Full wilderness survival systems, animals and hunting for food.
  • More items, crafting recipes, weapons and gameplay systems.
  • Steam Workshop and Achievements support
  • Game pad support
  • Local 4 player split-screen co-op

Early Access Review
A fantastic zombie apocalypse simulator, helmed by one of the nicest and most determined developers I've ever seen in the industry.

The game starts by spawning you at a random location in a massive world map filled with flesh-craving zombies (Which you can fully customize... want a shambler? Runner? No problem, the game allows you to change almost every aspect of your undead foes.) after which, you must then search for supplies and an adequate safehouse for survival. The game is very hardcore, with permadeath as well as essentially an insta-kill system, if you get attacked by a zombie, you either get bitten or scratched, being scratched has a small chance of you becoming infected, while being bitten is pretty much always going to infect you (95% chance I believe). Infection leads to a slow, unavoidable death.

Right now, the game has multiplayer, however, it's quite basic when it comes to server capabilities... the developers are planning on adding more admin features in the future however. Speaking of adding things, the developers are currently working on an amazing NPC system that could very much rocket this game into one of my favorites of all time, it's supposed to be able to generate events that are similar to situations from the walking dead, but randomly!

Of course... being early access does mean that the game has bugs, it is however fairly stable from what I've played so far. But it does have a fair share of annoying bugs and issues, particularly with the UI.

Overall... I can't recommend this game enough, it's just amazing so far, and they're planning on adding a huge amount of stuff that'll make the game even more worth the purchase! If you like zombie games, and extremely nice and helpful development teams and communites centered around your games, then you should get this game.

Note: this was the first review I've ever made. I also kind of suck with my paragraphs, so give me a little slack :P

UPDATE

Notable new features that came out after I made this review

1. A public server list for easily joining multiplayer games, which is cool, seeing how most indie games lack these the vast majority of the time even when they're finished.

2. A more in depth cooking system, including more cooking utensils and recipes.

3. A fishing system.

4. 3D models and general optimization.

5. A new mall area in the northeast (I believe, still haven't gotten there yet) section of the map crawling with thousands of zombies and tons of loot, suppose you could say this is the dungeon!

These are only the ones I could come up with at a moments notice, since I'm pretty busy. There's way more changes than that though.

"How long will you survive?!"
Survival Apocalypse at it's best - Imagine the finished version of DayZ meets JaggedAlliance/UFO (in realtime). Project Zomboid is the Top-Down-Real-Time-Survival-Apocalypse-Thriller.
EarlyAccess: PZ feels quite finished (ca. 95%). Besides some few bugs, the gameplay, mechanics & features are very well implemented. There are some AAA titles (nowadays) which feel much more unfinished, even in gold status / or 6 months after their official release...

Great:
+ atmosphere
+ ost (@Zach Beever#4,8,10)
+ world
+ lots of loot
+ lots of tough zombies
+ gameplay &-mechanics
+ controls (mouse+tastatur)
+ real-time fighting & shooting
+ not a "stupid" Hack'n'Slay title
+ skill points = experience (&knowledge)
+ graphics (if U can appreciate the "old days")
+ zoom in(=pixels) & out(=crisp)
+ tough, realistic and well conceived survival game system
+ adjustable & movable active windows (eg.: inventory/skills)
+ UFO / XCOM / JA "-kind of feeling" (it's not round-based!)
+ read the Current Features Section!

Not as perfect:
- some zombie sounds could be improved a little
- improved splatter system (eg.: more&intense blood)
- bullet holes (eg. in the walls)
- a bit more "brains" would be awesome

I do not regret any dime! Get it & start playing...
This is an EarlyAccess game which deserves to be supported, a lot!

(Multiplayer not yet tested!)

I woke up one morning cold and dreary. To find the monsters outside my window bold and eerie.

I grasped my lucky baseball bat and swung hard into the black. To my suprise it was not two or three but a whole army of undead waiting for a snack.

They grabed my arms and pulled with such fright pushing me to the ground. Out of the corner of my eye I see my shotgun, oh old friend you'll never shot another round.

The world fades to black. "You survived: 457 days, 11 hours, and 37 minutes"

Time to start another game. Muldraugh or West Point?

- 10 out of 10 would play again.

"This is the story of how you died"

Project Zomboid is one of the few Zombie survival games that actually tries to have everything loved from the genre. Crafting, cooking and farming. Barricade windows and doors, build a safe house and scavenge supplies to stay alive.

Using the skills to build and cook or fight will allow you to become better at them, so there is some character progression.

Also let's not forget the awesome music in this game. Highly reccomended!

If I had to compare it to any games I would say it is like the sims+ Don't starve+ night of the living dead.
Future plans are in place to add npc's other than zombies and polish to the engine and graphics.
It really is quite addicting and a great early access title to get your hands on. Especially if you liked state of decay and wanted a little more. Also word going around that a story campaign will be put in as well.

With amazing details like food degradation and injury/ illness/ exposure to cold and heat/ mood debuffs/ weapon durability/ character encumberance/ sound and light attraction of the zombies this game can be a nice challenge on the nice open maps.
It isn't an FPS but it plays great and has similar controls to an FPS.

Just remember this is Early Access and there are some bugs and such. As it stands the game is very much in a good playable state and well worth the money. Hearing about the coming changes to this title, I am even more stoked about this particular purchase.
