It seemingly only installed Age of Empires III for me. I thought I was paying for the "Complete Edition", it was on sale, so I jumped on it, what's going on here?

Hooh boy, AoEIII. A very good contender for my favourite RTS game ever, and definitely somewhere in my top 10 games of all time.
As a game? I would definitely recommend it to anybody who hasn't played and has the capacity to play. The lack of requiring a storehouse or similar structure to gather resources is a welcome addition, especially for me who often finds it tedious to construct a lumber camp every hour or so in aoeII. It's fairly easy compared to its later installments; i won a Moderate game with the Trade Monopoly condition in about two hours or so.

But this version... it's basically the same minus a few upgrades, and doesn't really justify a $40 price tag 10 years after its release. It's also a little glitchier than the store version. I also can't get it and Steam to syncronize, which I was looking forward to and was primarily why i bought the game from steam.

Get it if your current version doesn't work anymore or you've never played before, as AOEIII is a really fun experience, but if your current version works on your computer, I'd give this one a skip.

In my opinion it is one of the best strategic Games ever made.

I still knew the feeling i first played it, bought as a CD on my fathers PC.
And it felt really good.

For the year 2009 the graphic is awesome.
The tribes are balanced and have special Cards and entities.
Even if there aren't that many tribes like in Age of Empires 2.

I really would like to see an Age of Empires IV or even more Parts of this fantastic game series.

Be trump! Build a massive wall to stop foreigners!

On a serious note; this is a fantastic way to waste several hours. Just a shame that you need to jump through hoops and install 3rd party software to play a game with another human.

A game from back when RTS games were still riding high, when "base building" wasn't a dirty word and factions were meant to be colourful and fun. It shows its age now, but the core mechanics are still solid.

An unusual characteristic of an RTS was persistency; or how your play affected you in the next game. AOE III had experience gain over time that would unlock "cards", which then could be called into play in a future match. This also came with nice cosmetic upgrades for a "capital" city, which let players really feel that they were leading an army into battle. Sadly these cosmetic upgrades were not in place for Asian or American civilizations in the expansions, although the persistant card unlocks are still present.

The factions are nicely done. The European factions all largely play the same, with some emphasis on artillery, cavalry, or infantry between them. Asian civilizations are also fairly similar, just implementing "wonders" as well as other minor changes. I do like the emphasis on the Americans, who end up playing much more differently as they lack the hard defenses that others do. Overall these different factions make for a high level of replayability.

An old game, but worth the money. Especially since newer quality RTSs are infrequent.

Following on from the monumental success that was Age of Empires II, this third installment brings the franchise into the light with jaw-droppingly amazing graphics and a style of gameplay that is a dream to play. The attention to detail is astounding, from everything to cracks in a townhouse just about ready to crumble, to the wide range of sound effects ranging from hilarously stereotypical comments from Isabella of Spain to Frederick the Great of Germany, to the sounds of canons such as the Falconets. Even the different environments manage to evoke a sense of belonging, as if one is truly standing in the snow in Siberia, or sweating bullets in Caribbean - not an easy feat for a strategy game to achieve. The fact that no major installment have been released since (Age of Empires IV anyone?) is simply a testament to the replay value and endurance of one of the all-time greatest strategy games released.

VERDICT: 10/10
