Adding together all the elements, playful and creative, A New Beginning is not hard to be recommended as a purchase more than recommended to lovers of adventure games as well as the best the genre has been able to express, looking at the outputs in the shops and the main ones in digital delivery, in 2011. the sci-environmental theme is treated in a serious and interesting, used as background for telling stories and characters that accompany the player in the completion of a good number of puzzles, designed for variety and challenge. Too bad for some high and low and smudging techniques that are repeated in the products signed Daedalic Entertainment, otherwise fantastic in terms of design and artistic qualities.

"Steam. Not smoke."

A New Beginning is one of Daedalic Entertainments' "pretty good idea, done nonchalantly" games. Thus, it is a great potential story wrecked with many bugs, bad translation and a half-baked ending. I had really some major expectations from this game, with themes such as time travelling, environmental pollution and mass awareness but... No, it doesn't cut. This is not how it's done. This is not how it should be done. All this tension, all these ominous warnings, all this thrill and this action... and this ending? This is not a climax! Are you mocking me?

Sorry, my annoyance gets the best of me sometimes. It's storytelling time. Here, we have the elderly Norwegian bioengineer Bent Svensson who spent all his life working in the laboratory to produce energy from algae for the production of safe energy in hopes for a better future for the planet. After a breakdown that he suffers due to exhaustion, Bent is sent to retirement - the purgatory of a workaholic. He now lives in a small cabin in Norwegian Fjords, away from work, away from stress and away from responsibility. "Calm down, Bent" says his psychiatrist. "You are not responsible of saving the world".

Oh, she couldn't be more wrong! Bent Svensson's silent misery in retirement is suddenly interrupted by the visit of Fay, an odd young woman who claims that she time travelled from the future to find him. According to Fay, she comes from a future where the mother earth is at her limits and about to perish for good due to years of pollution, violent climate changes and toxicity. As part of an operation called as 'the Phoenix Plan' she is sent to past to prevent a disaster from happening to alter the course of time. "Only you, Bent" says Fay, "Only you can save the world!”

I know I was intrigued after the brief introduction to the game. The environmental theme, financial conspiracies, bioengineering, time travel, ecoterrorism... What else I can expect from a sci-fi environmental adventure? Right? Sadly there is a truckload of bugs and irritable mistakes within this game which will simmer down your enthusiasm. There is a common bug that makes your inventory unreachable, thus unable to complete an action to progress which triggers a couple of times, starting with the end of chapter 2. You should either ask Daedalic support for a save game where the bug isn't triggered, or pray you got plenty of your saves to try again.

The graphics are beautiful, this is already a trademark for Daedalic. Cinematic cut scenes are arranged in a comic-style manner where comic panels are presented with speech bubbles over characters, alongside voice acting. The comic style character artwork is a great idea of presentation, but my issue comes with the translation. As Daedalic being a German firm, I assume for original voice acting and script to be in German. So the English translation is... well, horrible. Word puns and scientific explanations are totally lost. There are many, many spelling errors within texts. The speaking animations do continue long after the voice acting is already stopped. With all these errors, it becomes really hard to get into mood and take either character or the story seriously.

About the gameplay itself, it is your basic point and click adventure. Item combinations do make sense, and nearly always they go along with an engineering view point. Lots of things to fix, physical reactions to mind, machines to manage and operate. Thus, it becomes obscure sometimes for you to be able to think of needed ways to progress. Puzzles themselves are very realistic, to a degree of - yet again, becoming obscure. I am usually very good at solving such puzzles without a walkthrough, but in the case of this specific game, I gave up. I personally think there is no one who was able to solve all puzzles without the help of a walkthrough for this game.

I do not give up on games with good stories due to bugs, really. If I managed to play Anna to the end, and enjoyed every single moment of it, I'm positive bugs do not pull me down. My problem was the negligence in story persistency all together. Some characters made a shallow appearance and remain unvisited and unmentioned for the rest of the story, which prevents us from emphasizing with them altogether. Aside the character of Bent Svensson himself maybe, characters aren't more than some pictures with speech bubbles. There is no personality, no cause-effect relationship in their actions, no reasoning to their thoughts or dialogues. There were some character inconsistencies, like a trained radio operative like Fay being borderline clumsy, just to force the storyline in a predetermined course. Every disaster or twist in the storyline is foreseeable and determined, aside from a really anticlimactic ending.

All in all, this is a mediocre game with incredible potential wasted terribly. Am I sorry that I played this? No, not at all. Gave me some thinking to do on the theme itself of course. But nothing I wouldn't get from reading Greenpeace bulletin or National Geographic. On sci-fi terms, I'll keep reading H.G. Wells.

A New Beginning - Final Cut is a Point & Click adventure game. At the turn of the 26th century, mankind is about to be extinct as the last few hundred left won't survive the next solar flare. Sent back in time to prevent a climate catastrophy, Radio-operator Fay approaches Bent Svensson, a retired physicist, in hopes that his work an algae-based power source could save the world.

Pros: The story is interesting, having a slightly dark tone to it. You alternate between characters, viewing the story through their eyes, or through the way they tell their story. All cut-scenes are comicbook-styled boxes and text bubbles, while the gameplay scenes all appears hand-drawn in the most classical fashion of Point & Click games, topped with often dramatic tone-setting music. You must regularly interact with the environment and/or your inventory to solve puzzles, while standalone single-screen puzzles may be skipped after a few attempts, for those who want to.

Cons: The immersion is totally broken by the bad voice acting. The voices themselves would portray the characters fine for the most part while other times it's just silly, but the lack of any conviction in the way the dialog is so blantantly read directly off the script is what kills it. There are sync problems with the cutscenes, with reading pauses when the text changes line, sometimes even in mid sentence! There are a few translation glitches in some subtitles or interactions, and in a variety of languages, too (I saw some French and I believe some Russian, while playing the English version). The sprite animation is very frame-by-frame and not very smooth.

Verdict: I may have been harsh on the game's technical and audio flaws, but I nevertheless enjoyed my ride through the story. Sometimes optimistic, sometimes bitter, the game really made me wonder whether it would have a happy ending or not. In the end, I do recommand this game to anyone who wants to find out for themselves.

I bought this game on sale. I got 28/28 achievements in 22 hours. Even though it sounds like it was voiced by a Neighborhood Acting Club that wasn't a big deal. The art work is retro-trippy and very good. I found it useful to save the game every 5 minutes, which is easy to do. I did get stuck a couple of times, so I used 4 different guides to get it all done. Probably the best game I have purchased for under $1.

Very decent point&click adventure with a message and morale.

You control Fay, a woman from the future on a quest back in time to save the planet as its dying in her world, and the man she meets, Bent Svensson, a scientist, whom Fay believes can save the world.

The sound and music is decent there is definitely some flaws in the voice acting, particularly with main character Fay. Others also seem to 'overact'. Fays posture is also terrible, nobody can stand like that with a normally shaped spine.

Anyways; the rest of the game is decent, but you will probably need a guide at some of the puzzles. There is normally a reset button, on only one puzzles (water pumps) it's possible to ♥♥♥♥up so you need to reload. Note that the game does not autosave outside of remembering where you are, so you must save in order to get around this one puzzle if you want the achievement for playing all minigames. I also had Fay get stuck at one point, forcing be to reload from a save.

It also has some weird bugs; for example a rock/plank puzzle I was obviously supposed to walk over the plank, then pick it up and put it towards the next rock, but when I clicked to pick up the plank, Fay would walk over to the rock I was on before, then pick it up. She did this three times before she finally decided to pick it up on the rock she was supposed to be on. Had it not been such an obvious solution I would have thought I did something wrong and backtracked/messed about other things for a long time. I assume the puzzle requires perfect positioning or something.
Also 2 times in the game were the 'use item' options in Russian and near the end at an important scene the subtitles is in German with no English voiceacting. Very annoying.

Some of the achievements are also mutually exclusive, so a save must be made before some puzzles/encounters to make life easier.

The story is about saving the world from environmental disaster, so yes, there is quite a lot of talk about saving the environment and all life is precious etc. It did not bother me much as it was part of the story.
The story is long, 12 hours+ without skipping anything and the ending was imo very interesting.

Recommended; but be aware of possible bugs, lacking voice acting, and environmental talks. Save often in many slots, and keep a guide at hand for the most complicated puzzles.
