About This Game

ABOUT EMPIRE: TOTAL WAR

Dominate the 18th century on land and sea. Command the seas, control the land, forge a new nation, and conquer the globe. Empire: Total War takes the Total War franchise to the eighteenth century Age of Enlightenment — a time of political upheaval, military advancements, and radical thought, captured in stunning detail in Empire: Total War.
Empire: Total War introduces a host of revolutionary new features, including true 3D naval combat. For the first time in the Total War series, you will be able to intuitively command single ships or vast fleets upon seascapes rich with extraordinary water and weather effects that play a huge role in your eventual glorious success or ignominious defeat. After pummelling your enemy with cannon fire, close in to grapple their ship and prepare to board, taking control of your men as they fight hand-to-hand on the decks of these wooden behemoths.
In addition, Empire: Total War will see further enhancements to the Total War series’ signature 3D battles and turn-based campaign map. Real-time battles will pose new challenges with the addition of cannon and musket, challenging players to master new formations and tactics as a result of the increasing role of gunpowder within warfare. And the Campaign Map — for many, the heart of Total War — introduces a variety of new and upgraded elements, including new systems for Trade, Diplomacy and Espionage with agents; a refined and streamlined UI; improved Advisors; and a vastly extended scope, taking in the riches of India, the turbulence of Europe and, for the first time, the untapped potential of the United States of America.
  • Take command on the high seas. New real-time 3D naval warfare takes Total War's unparalleled battle action to the high seas, with players commanding single ships or vast fleets.
  • Become a founding father. Starting in 1700 — The era of warfare across oceans, revolution and the founding of the United States.
  • All new graphics engine and technology features staggering real-time seascapes, new advanced landscape and flora systems, and dynamic weather.

I have owned and played all the Total War games from the first release of TW Shogun way back in 2000, to the latest TW Atila. All versions have had their pros and cons through the generations, from: terrible sprite-based graphics in an informative and easy to play early generation; through to the overly simplified mechanics of a beautifully rendered latest generation, all have had their good and the bad.

Putting aside historical inaccuracies and other criticisms of related to some liberties that may have been take to create these games, one has to remember that these are game, not simulations, and that they have to strike a balance between accuracy and playability to deliver enjoyment. That's the balance TW Empire delivers well...
I got TW Empire retail disk as soon as it came out. However, I didn’t get to really enjoy playing because the initial version ran poorly, even on my relatively powerful computer. It was playable but the choppy performance really had an impact on a poor first impression.

I played it and enjoyed how they treated the period. The masse battle lines of musketry, the roar of cannon, and the charge of sabre and lance, all really brought something to TW that had been long overdue. The quality of the battles wasn’t really better than its predecessor, just different, so different tactics had to be employed.

The more significant change was in the campaign management, which provided good improvements that added some depth, while still making the game easily managed.

I won't go to great detail about the above, but to reiterate that this is a well balanced game that weights detail and accuracy, against playability and entertainment, quite well. It combines the empire building and strategic management aspect with the real-time three dimensional tactical action well.

This game is very entertaining to play. However, the Steam version of it is awful. I have yet to actually beat the game because when I get around 3/4ths of the way it crashes and the autosave file ends up corrupted so it can't be loaded. Total War games have always been great, but do yourself a favor and get another version.

This game for me was, paradoxically, one of the best and worst Total War games. Perhaps this is because I have played so much of this title, I've had a chance to see all the best and worst parts of it. I love the time period and trans-continental features of this game, as well as the introduction of the naval battles to Total War. However, numerous small bugs and missed opportunities for improvement throughout the game, which could easily have been fixed if the game hadn't been rushed to realease so quickly, linger on and multiply to detract greatly from what could have been the best Total War game of all time.

Sadly, I find the vanilla game to be essentially unplayable due to the numerous issues and inaccuracies. However, with the addition of Darthmod (which you can find on the Total War Centre forums), you'll be able to experience a decent improvement in gameplay, but perhaps only a fraction of what the game could have become if the development had not been so rushed.

This title had so much potential, but the lack of development meant an unfinished game was released. Mods have partially offset this issue, but I can't help but imagine how amazing this game could have been if more effort was invested during development. I still recommend this game, dispite it's faults, as with Darthmod it is really a game worth having.

Despite the terrible ai, the game is pretty great. It was amazing for its time and it is pretty good for todays standards as well. I would even go as far as to say some features in this game surpass some other Total war games recently released. I've never really had that much fun with trading as i had in this game as of late.

Dont buy this as your first Total war game though. I think the newer titles are better for that. Unless you are particulary interested in the time period this game offers.
