ABOUT EMPIRE: TOTAL WAR

Dominate the 18th century on land and sea. Command the seas, control the land, forge a new nation, and conquer the globe. Empire: Total War takes the Total War franchise to the eighteenth century Age of Enlightenment — a time of political upheaval, military advancements, and radical thought, captured in stunning detail in Empire: Total War.
Empire: Total War introduces a host of revolutionary new features, including true 3D naval combat. For the first time in the Total War series, you will be able to intuitively command single ships or vast fleets upon seascapes rich with extraordinary water and weather effects that play a huge role in your eventual glorious success or ignominious defeat. After pummelling your enemy with cannon fire, close in to grapple their ship and prepare to board, taking control of your men as they fight hand-to-hand on the decks of these wooden behemoths.
In addition, Empire: Total War will see further enhancements to the Total War series’ signature 3D battles and turn-based campaign map. Real-time battles will pose new challenges with the addition of cannon and musket, challenging players to master new formations and tactics as a result of the increasing role of gunpowder within warfare. And the Campaign Map — for many, the heart of Total War — introduces a variety of new and upgraded elements, including new systems for Trade, Diplomacy and Espionage with agents; a refined and streamlined UI; improved Advisors; and a vastly extended scope, taking in the riches of India, the turbulence of Europe and, for the first time, the untapped potential of the United States of America.
  • Take command on the high seas. New real-time 3D naval warfare takes Total War's unparalleled battle action to the high seas, with players commanding single ships or vast fleets.
  • Become a founding father. Starting in 1700 — The era of warfare across oceans, revolution and the founding of the United States.
  • All new graphics engine and technology features staggering real-time seascapes, new advanced landscape and flora systems, and dynamic weather.

I would really love to play this game. I have before, and it was quite fun (at least with Darthmod). Unfortunately, CA and Sega are both cash grabbing, dlc-whoring scumbags who have decided that their fans are expendable, and that they are obliged to completely cut off support for anything before rome 2. Do not buy Empire, or any future game - CA/Sega will not support them for longer than a year, and if they do it will be barely a game without the all new 'Content packs' that cost £4.99 to add essential factions, such as Sparta in Rome 2, the Chaos Warriors in Warhammer or the Slavs in Attila. Don't support the scum♥♥♥♥s who want to fleece every last penny they can out of you. Instead, buy Rome 1 or Medieval 2, where the modders have succeeded where CA has failed to, adding all new campaigns such as a Lord of the Rings one for M2, or (ironically) the Warhammer mod for M2. It says a lot when the best mods of the older games delve into fantasy and total conversions, while with the newer games and with Empire especially, the best mods are the ones that make them functional. ♥♥♥♥ CA and ♥♥♥♥ Sega for becoming such scum and deploying such deplorable buissness tactics. Well and truly, they do not deserve even a single penny, from anyone at any time.

I have recently completed the long campaign on the difficult setting as Britain. I have also completed the independence campaign. Although the game has been around for a long time I found it an asborbing experience to play and worth the large amount of time required to successfully complete the long campaign. Having said that there are issues that detract from the game and these probably apply to the total war series in general. Issues that have been mentioned in other reviews include the inappropriate use of bomb ketches and rocket ships in naval battles. Either they should not have been included in the game or the ability to have coastal battles and sieges in which these ships could have been used should have been developed. Puckle guns are another unit mentioned before that were not actually used in the era and therefore should probably not have been included. Going back to the idea of coastal sieges Marine units might have been an interesting addition to the game and created a bit more diversity in the battle environments.

The battle experience could have been improved by having some sort of smart setup option. I often found I laid out my armies and fleets in the same way, dependent upon the landscape. The ability of the game to remember a preferred setup style and to vary it depending on the terriain could help save a lot of repetitive setup issues. When it came to deciding battles against missmatched armies and fleets using the auto resolve often your troops ended up taking relatively heavy losses. When your fleet came up a mismatched fleet often weaker fleet would be entirely destroyed when it should probably have just been captured. It might have been good to have options on the auto-resolve to indicate tactics that your fleet or army could utilise that would lead to a lower loss of life or the capture of enemy vessels. This would cut down on the 'grind' of some of the battles.

The final issue that I felt could have been better was the 'end'. Just a fairly lame animation and that's that. What I think alot of players of the Total War series would find really interesting would be a 'history' of their campaign sort of like at the end of a Civilisation game. There could be a quick history that showed general information about your game play and other nations and a really detailed turn by turn game history that showed everything from the movement of individual units to general economic and social issues of each faction. Notable battles could highlighted and replayed and pivotal movements could be highlighted. This would be a rewarding experience for a player who has devoted a considerable length of time to playing. It could also be used as feedback for the game developers to find out how the game is played and how it could be improved. These 'histories' could even be shared and 'ranked' between players to create interest for different players to develop their tactics and strategies. Perhaps, there could also be a comparison with the actual events of the era.

Probably one of my most favorite Total War games throughout the whole franchise, besides Shogun 2.
The raw amount of options to consider when running your empire are like Europa Universalis but without the micro management and waiting. The game excels in fort battles and naval battles, probably the most satisfying moments are using 2 first of the line ships to sandwhich and massacre a whole crew within seconds, screenshots are necessary,

One of the better Total War games and the first to allow you to take direct control of naval combat, which is well realized. It's also a game that doesn't take that long - you could breeze through even a 'world domination' campaign in just a day or two with most of the playable factions.

The modding scene is very strong with numerous gameplay-tweaks and overhauls available to spice things up a bit. My main gripe is that, outside of the Shogun TW games, the unit rosters are among the least varied - most of the European factions have near-identical unit rosters, and their unique choices are all too often functionally identical to eachother. Only the Ottoman empire and the Maratha Confederacy really buck this trend significantly, though the Russians have a few gimmicks too.

The game offers a tangible way of winning without conquering absolutely everyone through prestige victory, which is nice in principle, but in reality is still best achieved by conquering everyone. It's nice if you want to role-play a bit though.

Excitingly, the game takes place in three theatres, Europe, the Americas, and India, which gives you multiple avenues of conquest.

My main gripes are that Agents don't seem to grow very much. Gentlemen don't become better scholars while they are researching in a school, missionaries don't seem to improve much while they are preaching. The diplomacy AI is maddeningly stupid and thinks it is winning wars even if it is being crushed, and will often refuse to aquiesce unless you have their final settlement under siege (and even then it might deny demands, or even requests for peace!). Lastly, there is too much bias on things playing out a certain way - in every campaign I've done Prussia ALWAYS stomps over central Europe. The Maratha Confederacy ALWAYS gains full control of India. The Thirteen Colonies NEVER rebel against British Rule. Part of the joy of Total war is creating and witnessing alternate history, and seeing the same things happening time after time gets a bit stale. Too much is engineered to happen or not happen. I'd love to see a game where the Mughal Empire actually manages to resist the Maratha Confederacy, or one where France and Spain actually do something over in the Americas.

That's not enough to really ruin my enjoyment of the game. There is something very majestic about watching regiments of line infantry shoot the living hell out of eachother. Watching cannonballs rip through cavalry units in slow motion never gets old, and nor does mowing down foot soldiers with cannister shot. This game also has the best research tree of any of the total war games that came after. I enjoyed the way that scholars worked with schools, allowing you to really take control over how research-focussed you wanted to be.

Overally I really enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, this game.

Start as Russia
Kiev is already mine? Putin would be proud
Start war with Sweden, this shouldn't be hard
Ottomans say "we want your land" Still should be easy, even Russia is more industrialized then them
Capture St. Petersburg and Crimea, build a fleet in the north and south
Ottomans and Swedes destroy both fleets after one turn...
Ottomans and Swedes start taking land, where is General Winter when I need him?
I push back, now contol all my original territory plus Dagistan and Norway
Notice Maratha Confederacy is in Europe "Hey, wanna help me with the Ottomans?"'
Maratha Confederacy declares war, takes Dagistan, then three more territories
Dagistan rebels, forms an alliance with Maratha Confederacy
Sweden gets Superior Line Infantry, and the Ottomans get Organd Guns, my armies are obliterated
I finally take my old territory in the east, Greece and Bosnia in the south, and Sweden in the north
End turn, com♥♥♥♥r crashes on Maratha Confederacy's turn

10/10 would annex Sweden and Greece into Russia again

This game was one of my first steam games ever. I wouldn't call it an work of art, but the huge campaign map, the beatiful (for it's time) textures and the textbook correct nations are absolutly wonderful. The variety of nations you can playas, from the OP island nation of Great Britain, to the rebelling colonists in the American theartre, and the Rebelling Maratha faction in India, this game's wide, unique and colorful blend of nations and maps are truly something worth buying this game. This is one of the best total war games out there, especially if you love 18th century history. Works perfectly with Dathmod. I highly recomend you play vanilla first, however, just to get the feeling of the great game you just bought. The battle AI could use some improvment though, other than that, great game Sega/ Total War!!!

This game is easy to learn for everybody who is new to strategy games. The tutorials are really helpfull and in the normal campaigns you'll get hints on how to play with your nation.

It is quite historically correct, which makes it also really interesting. And because you can choose your own difficulty it's challenging for beginners as well as more experienced players.

You can choose from a bunch of nations to play the campaign with. Thanks to that you can spend many hours on this game without getting bored.

The diplomacy features in this game are quite good, but they could be better. Religion is a great factor and the historical alliances are not easily broken, while in reality the nations switched alliances almost every generation.

But besides that I'll recommend this game to everyone who likes strategy games or history games and who doesn't like to see to many complicated features to control a nation.

This game was my first Total War experience, and I must say, I was quite lost at the start of my journey. The grand strategy and RTS genres were probably the ones I had the least experience with, but playing around with this for 340+ hours was both an enlightening and rewarding experience. Even though this game is old and outdated by todays standards, that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying. I have completed around five grand campaigns, and as expected, are very similar to one another. The three 'superpowers' of the time period (Britain, France and Spain) are the only factions that have missions, one for each of them. The game does little to encourage more playtime apart from these three faction specfic missions and the initial goals of conquering a set amount of regions, making the mid-game quite tedious. One thing that needs to be addressed (and probably never will be by CA) is the fact that the Maratha Confederacy is ridiculously unbalenced. I've seen them field between 10-15 armies (a few of them full stacks) just in one region. I'm not sure if they're supposed to act as an invasionary force much like the Chaos Warriors in the newly released Total War: Warhammer, but if they are, it hasn't been done right. I've noticed that the aggressiveness of the Confederacy may be due to a patch made by CA due to complaints about factions not being offensive enough and is frequently mentioned in old posts found on the Total War Forums for this game.

Apart from this, the battles are entertaining and sometimes (perhaps rarely) even challenging, depending on the troops you field (to this day, I still haven't mastered Cavalry units). The siege variant of these battle can be boring, unless you take the fight straight to the enemy, unlike the historical methods of these situations. Sea battles are initially confusing, but are actually quite simple and easy to master. I recall that there is a guide someone wrote regarding this.

Overall, the game stands as a great acheivement and a welcome first step into the world of the RTS and grand strategy. It may trip over its own feet at times, but the entertainment value found in the game is ultimately up to the player.
