About This Game

Seven classic games in one collection. Celebrate the golden age of adventure games all over again with the return of King's Quest.
  • The bravest knight in all of Daventry, Sir Graham, is appointed by the dying king to embark on a Quest for the Crown. By retrieving the three treasures of Daventry, he will not only save the land but become its king.
  • Now the ruler of Daventry, King Graham sees a vision of a beautiful woman trapped in a tower. Romancing the Throne won't be easy with mermen and vampires separating him from his imprisoned bride.
  • A young apprentice to an evil wizard must escape his captor or be faced with certain death. Upon the discovery that he is the long-lost son of the royal family, young prince Alexander learns that To Heir is Human.
  • King Graham lies on the brink of death and only a magical fruit from a far off land can heal him. The Perils of Rosella pit evil fairies and fearsome foes against the brave princess as she fights to save her father.
  • Returning home one day to find the castle missing, King Graham must don his famous adventurer's cap once more to find his family. Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder and Graham must learn a little magic of his own to rescue his loved ones from an evil spell.
  • Haunted by the memory of the kidnapped princess who helped his family escape the malevolent wizard Mordack, Alexander learns of a plot to force the beautiful Cassima to marry an evil Vizier. Sworn to protect the woman who saved his life, Alexander takes to the Green Isles in Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow.
  • Rebellious Rosella is content to be The Princeless Bride, but her adventurous spirit may lead to a marriage to the King of the Trolls. With the help of her mother, Queen Valanice, Rosella must end a plot to destroy the land of Eldritch and find her own happy ending.

King's Quest 1 was the first game that impressed me deeply and made me notice videogames as a medium and format with vast potential to go infinitely beyond the arcades of its time, in which you just played an eternal repetition trying to reach a good score. Not that I am against this kind of game, hell I still play a lot of stuff like that to this day, but we couldn't just stop there and KQ's contribution was paramount for this.

The feeling of adventure and fantasy that the series provides - especially 1, 3, 5 and 6, and yeah I played them all - is unparalleled, and Roberta Williams' huge sensibility to transpose the magic feel of fables and folk tales to the games is definitely something to be noticed. Somehow makes you see things with children's eyes again, with that mixture of curiosity, excitement and awe.

Small note on the compatibility topic: simply apply the patch that can be found on Sierra's help page (you can easily find it around here, the community hub and the forums) and they all work perfectly.

SOLVED!
http://steamcommunity.com/app/10100/discussions/0/611701360816561388/

After years of wanting to play and running into one issue after another trying to get it to load I was finally able to find a solution for Windows 7 x64 and even Windows 8.

It ran all the updates and I'm able to launch the games in their old 16-bit Windows glory using ScummVM (Sierra's patch already is able to detect if you have it and set it up proper for the game, good on you Sierra!)

Full CD quality with video's for KQ6 and KQ7 (only way to play and because I did years ago it's why I couldn't pick it up for so long).

The games were great then and are great now, so the review is less about a game you can google about and more a nod to Sierrahelp's patch that Steam doesn't install for you.

No need to limit Colors on your entire system to 254. No need to tweak. Just open the new folders made.

(for me)
D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\King's Quest Collection\KQ6
And double click the "King's Quest 6 Win.exe" (or make a shortcut ;-) )

Boom! Playable.

How to Get KQ Collection Working on Windows 7

Download this patch:

http://www.sierrahelp.com/Files/Patches/KingsQuest/KQCollectionDBUpdate.exe

Set it to install to "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\King's Quest Collection" or wherever Steam saved your KQ Collection files.

This program will patch the Steam version of KQ Collection to run through Dos box, and I can confirm it makes the game a joy to run on Win 7 64bit.

Cons:

* You will have to run the game through the Dosbox shortcuts that the patch creates; the Steam launcher won't work.

* Your in-game mouse cursor will become black and white where it is otherwise colored.

None of the games work on my pc. (Windows 7 corei5) The original game is replaced by the 1990 vga remake, but that doesnt matter because none of it runs anyway. Viewing the forums shows many many people with the same problom. Buy the GOG versions instead. Stay away from this trashy non-port.

Great blast from the past.

Most of the people who do not recommend this game are saying it is unplayable or does not work. If they would read the store page or knew how to use google to find the fix their review would be more positive.

Classic game that has such replayablity... I played this as a little munchkin and I still love it today.

Pre-Release Review
What can't I say about King's Quest? I was near about raised on adventure games, and this was a big one. I didn't really appreciate it as much as a kid as I have on my recent replayings of the series. The one thing I will mention in regards to this collection, though, is that there are bugs that occur because this game was not built for newer systems. You can find the patches for it at http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/Patches-Updates-Games/KingsQuestUpdates.html. Alternatively, you can purchase the collection from GOG.com. They have it split into three sections, 1-3, 4-6, and 7-8, and 8 isn't included in this collection. I have yet to determine if this is a good or bad thing.

I'll also mention that AGDI made a wonderful remake for the original King's Quest to give it icons like KQV and KQVI had, and they did a big storyline overhaul for KQII that even included the original voice actor for Graham. They also did an update to KQIII with a little bit more story to it, as well as the icons. You can find them at http://www.agdinteractive.com/.

As much as I love these games, I need to down vote it.

For one reason and one reason only, it’s not compatible. You need a really old PC to be able to run this and steam hasn’t bothered uploading the fixed version of this pack of games. (That I think "good old games" actually sells)

Although it doesn’t work, I brought this pack anyway fully knowing that.
Why?
I love these games, and I thought maybe one day they might actually update it. But even if they don’t, I don’t really mind. The money is bound to go to its makers and King Quest VII was a game that I really enjoyed when I was younger, so that is dedication for you!

A great pack of point and click classics, if you can get them to work.

Awesome game series from when I grew up. Sadly you cannot play all of them unless you have an old computer.

I looove the King's Quest Collection. The only downside, of which I hope it will get fixed soon, is that I can't play the King's Quest 7. The rest works except that one which I like the most of all. Also very strange, because KQ7 is the newest of this entire collection, so you would think that part 7 would work and that the older versions wouldn't work instead. But anyway... King's Quest 7 is the reason that I've bought the entire Collection so I am a bit dissapointed. I am looking forward to a fix! (I have Windows 8.1)

I have more or less only played kings quest 7 (as I played it in my youth) to an extent to say that it is a really good, funny and a charming game, the others I have started to try and as far they are really funny.
I had also a few problems at first like that the colors were strange if you wanted to play the games in full screen or I was just unable to play the game. But I found this site and downloaded the patch and now everything is working as far as I have tried. I can start all of the games and play them in fullscreen with no problem :)

This is the link, http://www.sierrahelp.com/Misc/KQCPatch.html

Hope it works for you guys so you can enjoy this wonderful game series.

I bought this solely for Kings Quest 6 to relive my nostalgic glory days; unfortunately unplayable. The game will bug out at when you meet the court jester; reloading a saved game does not solve the issue. Accessing the top options bar doesn't work as well. I can't comment on the other games in this series. Big let down. I've had the collection for about 2 years now and they haven't released a patch or update. Skip this; buy from GOG or find the original CD-ROMS on Ebay.

Best adventure game series EVER made and probably the thing that jump started my gaming addiction. Super old though and maybe not relevant today but if you like classic adventure and dont mind old school gigantic pixels and having to use your brain for once to get through things this is an epic and well worth it saga.

This game DOES work for me but it looks like others have not had as much luck. Seems like a roll of the dice I guess.

Not sure why people complain; have tried this on Windows 7 (disabled DEP) and works fine. It uses DOSBox to run the original game files. So if you experience issues you could easily replace the DOSBox binary. A nice collection, comparable to the GOG version (which is offered as three different items).

Ugh. I hate not being able to recommend this game.

I love the King's Quest games. They were some of my first RPG's. The stories are wonderful, puzzles challenging, and characters interesting (please caveat this with the fact that these are all older games; you're not getting massively in depth here).

However, this edition just does not work with my computer. The graphics are off, it doesn't play right, which makes it a disappointment.

I ended up downloading the games (plus KQ8: Mask of Eternity, which is not included in this set) from GOG.com for the same amount it's available for on Steam regularly.

Great games, just not through this edition.

Why is this even for sale still? Windows XP, 32-bit, only. An out of support operating system required to play it reliably. Why not just sell the original DOS versions instead?

Same applies to Space Quest collection and the Doom releases....

Pros: ?
Cons: ?
Summary: I can't review this because it won't run properly. Despite this being a nearly universal problem with seemingly every customer, there appears to be no care or effort to officially fix this. So, basically, if you want to be defrauded for about $20, then buy this game collection.
If you have an ancient machine, you don't have anything to worry about.

I only finished KQ5 yet but i feel the need to write something down here. These games were available in more languages than one but somehow they won`t support anything but english. Activision created a shameless port here just using the worst settings of DOSbox to bring these games to modern systems. No work was put into this and therefore doesn`t deserve any credit.
