In the field of design & 3D software I like small studios over the big companies. They are important because they are the driving force and the only competition to the +-10 global players. I also like the "attitude" of Pilgway studio in general, but not in all areas. That's why my rating is neutral, otherwise it would be negative.
Why don't I like 3D coat:
1.) Inconsitency: You can find that in most parts of 3D Coat as well as the accompanying stuff. There's a lag of a common thread starting at the license models (Steam / their website / both mixed up with conditions that likely won't stand a lawsuit in any country) continuing in documentation, general presentation, logo, icon, texts and in the software itself. It looks and feels like a car someone build in his own garage. That person was dedicated and did a highly sophisticated work, but it is still a huge difference to a car comming from a companies assembly line. If you earn enough with this software my wish would be you get a guy that fixes all of the above. Make a consistent look, make consistent licence models that fit for "real life" (e.g. beginner / intermediate / pro), pricing, website and so on.
2.) User interface: It's horrible. It's worse than Blender 2.49 and I worked with that back in the good old days. The interface needs a complete overhaul in my opinion. Slider value inputs e.g. aren't sliders, they are text you have to click & drag. Stuff pops out, moves, appears, dissapears. And this clumsy interface is packed with so many options I've never seen before in any software in my whole life.
It looks like more and more features where brought into it over the years, but no one knew where to put em. There are different right click menus everywhere. The options are the opposite of self explanatory as the whole ui is the opposite of being intuitive. I'm sure most senior user will hate me for this, but I'd say throw out at least half of those options and make the rest user friendly. There are even more problems with the user interface, the viewport navigation is, sorry to repeat myself, horrible. Standard functionally, e.g. like scaling a texture isn't there or hidden under some obscure menu or symbol somewhere. Settings like for the mouse buttons are found not in one place but in numerous. I can configure what my middle mouse button should do in at least three different places. Outcome unknown. Inconsistency.
In the preference I find "Set default keys" next to "To default keys", which wouldn't be as confusing if could set actual key shortcuts somewhere in this dialog, but I can't.
3.) Documentation: Maybe it's just my laziness but I couldn't find proper documentation. All users are just happy about "the tons of youtube videos" but that isnt a good replacement. Most of those videos are like "speed sculpting here" and "normal painting there". I didn't find anything starting from the beginning, guiding you through all the posibilities, at least explaining the bare concepts and different aspects of 3D Coat.
I really like you guys (the creators) for what you are doing and for being the opposite of the "evil major companies", even if you don't like me now. There's an awesome piece of software hidden under the mess above it. I hope you'll digg it out someday.
