I am a 22 year veteran professional 3D Artist working on a AAA best selling game. 3D Coat is my secret weapon.

Yes some people may say this is a great program for 3D beginners. But let me clarify. The only thing that makes it beginner is that it's easy to learn. This software is so ridiculously legitimate it should cost 10x what it does. Don't be fooled by the price. I use coat in combination with 3DStudio MAX and because of it I'm one of the fastest on the team putting out some of the best work. It is a very powerful and friendly program that really suits the needs of next gen environment artists. I primarily use it for voxel sculpting organic and hard surface props.

I use Coat 90% of the time when I need to sculpt. I use ZBrush about 10%. 3DCoat is where it's at baby. If you buy it and create work to sell please get the professional version. These developers deserve it. ZBrush is a grand and MAX is basically a monthly car payment now.

For $99 you would be insane not to buy it if you are a 3D Artist.

Brilliant modelling program. It is on par with Zbrush and the baking tools are incredible. Retopo tools are very much like Topogun, you can retopo your models quickly and efficiently. It is very easy to learn once you know the workflow which is pretty much standard.

PBR viewport which also has the same shading model as Unreal Engine 4 so what you see in 3D - Coat will be what you get in Unreal Engine 4 which really solves the problem of having to export and import to check any changes you have made with your models.

Great application, easy to learn, you can get amazing results with this and I highly recommend it!
I use it first time to make CS: Go skins but now also for Game development

Okay so this program is amazing. Now I have taken a lot of classes doing CADD so I have a little more than a basic understanding of working in 3D space, that being said the biggest issues that I have with this program is that the controls for working in their 3D space is not what I am familliar with. I also wish there where some more options for primitives, such as pyramid shapes or a way to add pick points to a model you are working with. Other than that I have found this to be a great program to get into 3D modeling.

Reason for purchase: To aid in making CS:GO skins.
Right.... after using the full trial and then buying the product, heres what ive scraped up.

Pros:

I only use this to make csgo skins, its done with ease
The price for what your getting is much cheaper comparing to major studios.
F**kin fantastic UI.

Cons:

Regular crashes when importing 'Zlayers' back from photoshop
Odd occasions the full UV texture doesnt show up
When importing the UV back into 3d-coat, it uses mass amounts of memory.

Fantastic program at an accessible price for anyone looking to get in to modeling/sculpting or veterans looking to try something new. Even tho I've only used a hand full of features so far, this program has a lot of potential and an intuitive interface. Offers the possibility to do an entire project without the need of another software.

This software is recommend for those who has no experience with 3D modeling. For them it is really an easy-to-use-tool.
I worked in the past with 3D Studio Max and I hoped this software was also alike, but I was wrong... This is only for the modeling purposes, not for animation etc. For that you need other software, if I understood it well.
Nevertheless I am still positive because of the user friendliness and getting fast any result from scratch.

Good program, but crashes like crazy. Every time I try to generate a UV map for my model, it crashes without explanation. Because of this, I can't make use of the program.

In the end, I decided to work on a completely new object. Much less complicated. Now, I'm running out of memory as well as getting the crash when I try to use the AUTOPO feature to create a UV. My machine has 8gb memory... so I have no idea how it's running out.

I'll recommend it when the frequent and sadly predictable crashes are fixed.

Neutral.

In the field of design & 3D software I like small studios over the big companies. They are important because they are the driving force and the only competition to the +-10 global players. I also like the "attitude" of Pilgway studio in general, but not in all areas. That's why my rating is neutral, otherwise it would be negative.

Why don't I like 3D coat:
1.) Inconsitency: You can find that in most parts of 3D Coat as well as the accompanying stuff. There's a lag of a common thread starting at the license models (Steam / their website / both mixed up with conditions that likely won't stand a lawsuit in any country) continuing in documentation, general presentation, logo, icon, texts and in the software itself. It looks and feels like a car someone build in his own garage. That person was dedicated and did a highly sophisticated work, but it is still a huge difference to a car comming from a companies assembly line. If you earn enough with this software my wish would be you get a guy that fixes all of the above. Make a consistent look, make consistent licence models that fit for "real life" (e.g. beginner / intermediate / pro), pricing, website and so on.

2.) User interface: It's horrible. It's worse than Blender 2.49 and I worked with that back in the good old days. The interface needs a complete overhaul in my opinion. Slider value inputs e.g. aren't sliders, they are text you have to click & drag. Stuff pops out, moves, appears, dissapears. And this clumsy interface is packed with so many options I've never seen before in any software in my whole life.
It looks like more and more features where brought into it over the years, but no one knew where to put em. There are different right click menus everywhere. The options are the opposite of self explanatory as the whole ui is the opposite of being intuitive. I'm sure most senior user will hate me for this, but I'd say throw out at least half of those options and make the rest user friendly. There are even more problems with the user interface, the viewport navigation is, sorry to repeat myself, horrible. Standard functionally, e.g. like scaling a texture isn't there or hidden under some obscure menu or symbol somewhere. Settings like for the mouse buttons are found not in one place but in numerous. I can configure what my middle mouse button should do in at least three different places. Outcome unknown. Inconsistency.
In the preference I find "Set default keys" next to "To default keys", which wouldn't be as confusing if could set actual key shortcuts somewhere in this dialog, but I can't.

3.) Documentation: Maybe it's just my laziness but I couldn't find proper documentation. All users are just happy about "the tons of youtube videos" but that isnt a good replacement. Most of those videos are like "speed sculpting here" and "normal painting there". I didn't find anything starting from the beginning, guiding you through all the posibilities, at least explaining the bare concepts and different aspects of 3D Coat.

I really like you guys (the creators) for what you are doing and for being the opposite of the "evil major companies", even if you don't like me now. There's an awesome piece of software hidden under the mess above it. I hope you'll digg it out someday.

It can also get stupidly complicated if you don't know these things.

Well worth the $79.99 purchase. The program works magnificently and brings voxels to a much more of a fun level and less complicated(at least for me). Still learning more about this software, but the Youtube tutorials always make the difference in helping you understand how these types of programs work by learning it from someone else's experience.

It even has an easy port option for Hat Simulator tw- I mean Team Fortress 2! Team Fortress 2 port ^________^

I would urge purchasing this earlier and at a sale ^_^

If you're an amatuer, who knows nothing about 3D modeling, then this is the program for you.

It's pretty intuitive after watching a few tutorial videos from their Youtube channel; and playing around with it your self. At first it may feel like learning a new language, but eventually you'll be able to create things straight from your dreams. Just think of it like playing with clay, but virtually.
